Just off the Nieuw Amsterdam this morning after an Alaskan cruise. The attire on Gala night for Open Seating in the Main Dining Room on Deck 2 was a mixed bag. We dined at various times and at Canaletto one evening. The men were mostly wearing shirts with collars from polos and golf shirts to dress shirts with short or long sleeves... with or without sweaters. Some also wore sport coats or a suit but very few ties. I counted 2 tuxes and they both stood out from the majority. One gentleman wore khakis with a T-shirt (no collar) and a sport jacket (collar). On smart casual nights we saw just about everything from t-shirts, track suits, a beach style tank top (on a woman), majority were in jeans, khakis, trousers etc.

We were dressed like the majority.

Thanks, that's just the current answer I needed, as we will be sailing the same ship in August.

  2. Just finished a NCL cruise, where they raised the prices on that cruise, so many of our usual drinks were out of the package.  Any one have access to or are familiar with HAL prices this year.  Trying to decide if should buy the Signature package for $9 drink limit, or the Elite for $15 drink limit.

  3. Not sure if this meets the OP's needs but just thought I'd throw an option out that my wife remembered. There's a lot on 1608 West Georgia Street run by Metro Parking.......quote]

Thanks did take a look at but as can't make reservations, and couldn't verify security decided to park at the airport, take the parking lot shuttle to the terminal and a cab to Canada Place. That will minimize walking and gives us more flexibility.

  4. We are driving our 24' RV from Arizona to facilitate visiting friends and family enroute. Unfortunately the RV exceeds the 6'9" height limits at Canada Place where we need to catch our cruise. Westcoast parking has no other options available at this time. So the most likely solution would be parking at the airport and taking some sort of shuttle to Canada Place, and reverse when we return a week later.

The most critical issue though is the fact that my husband and I are both disabled and have difficulty walking. So ease of transfer from the JetSet Lot to access to a Canada Place shuttle or tram location is very important. Do you have any suggestions.

  5. We will be driving a 24' motorhome cross-country for a two-week holiday cruise. Need current information on availability of parking or storage around the port. Previous posts are from years gone by, and have conflicting information. Ideally stay, then leave RV in park, but December is of course going to be a busy time in RV parks. Also the issue of shuttle to, and more importantly from the Holland America cruise terminal two weeks later.

  6. All I got from my survey was a nice "thank you for your input" - no credits or anything else.

We did not catch the virus however, so I guess that is good enough.

I wonder if anyone else who was on this cruise received anything from HAL??

To clarify...."Every traveler who has experienced illness while on vacation knows how frustrating and disappointing it can be and we truly sympathize with those guests who find themselves in this situation. Consequently, we’ve instituted a policy of compensating guests who are asked to remain isolated in their staterooms by our shipboard medical staff due to illness."

Both of us became ill and required medical attention, and of course were isolated for 36hours.

  7. Interesting though there is plenty of "news" on the Internet regarding the May 1 arrival of the Maasdam in Fort Lauderdale, nowhere can I find any "official" mention of the illness continuing on our cruise May 1-May 16. Have heard over 200 were ill, most like true for at any time there were 3-4 people ill in just our corridor on Deck 9. HAL wasn't very forthcoming with information during the cruise, and there's nothing out there now.

  8. I would say it is too early

It is at least 30 min to YUL from the port ..on a good day

you need to be there 2 hrs prior plus you will clear US Immigration before boarding That may take extra time

No guarantee you will be off by 8 am even

    Do you feel lucky :D

I guess we were LUCKY. Scheduled to pull in at 7:00, had expedited departure for 7:15. 7:30 finally pulled in, and we were 2nd in line. Took 30 min to get clearance [most likely because of the large number of pax who had become ill with norovirus]. All clear was announced at 8:00AM, but then we had to wait until a 50-man sanitation team came on board to disinfect the ship. 30 min cab ride, because of construction detours downtown. NO lines to check in, go through security of custom clearance. We were very thankful, as neither was up to par yet after getting sick ourselves a few days before that. Thanks Dave for you entry, and the helpful comments. PS having printed the information from the airport's website, really was helpful, as I knew what to expect.

  9. We are arriving in Montreal on a Saturday morning - 7 AM scheduled time. What would be the earliest we could catch a flight to the US? Would 10:30 AM work?

Wish I had found this link before, it details the security process at Montreal where we will preclear US immigration before boarding. It recommends arrive 3 hours prior to flight. Info too late, as I have unrefundable tickets. http://www.admtl.com/en/guide/personal-guide%3Fbase-course%3Ddeparture-international?base-course=42&flight-options=64

  10. We are arriving in Montreal on a Saturday morning - 7 AM scheduled time.

What would be the earliest we could catch a flight to the US? Would 10:30 AM work?

Also, how difficult will it be to get a taxi at this port?

We are in the same boat, literally, and also have a 10:30 flight. Maybe we can share a taxi?

  11. There used to be 1 evening Broadway show years ago that played a tiny bit of Phantom of the Opera -- maybe about 2 minutes worth. But that is long gone.

Otherwise -- you won't hear it anywhere on the ship.

Just returned from the Veendam to Mexico, two best shows were the Encore, where the lead singers did a wonderful job of singing all sorts of classics. Also Bob Mackie's Broadway, which of course included a tenor solo from the Phantom.
