  1. Is there a rental car company close to the port?

I recommend renting a car, visiting Lucayan National Park (not Grand Lucayan resort) and visiting Gold Rock Beach. The park is very interesting and the underwater cavern system is one of the longest in the world. Gold Rock Beach is void of the tourist crowds at the resorts. We had the entire beach to ourselves one afternoon.
  2. I wonder if Grand Lucayan is still closed? We booked day passes here for next month

I went to Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan last week during my cruise. Just as a tip, the actual Grand Lucayan Resort is closed, they will tell you that when you are trying to get a taxi. However, Lighthouse Pointe is open and is on the same property as the resort. My boyfriend and I went and really enjoyed it. There is a large swimming pool, a whirlpool, a lap pool, and of course the beach area. There are people also at the beach area selling water sport activities, if that's something you would be interested in.
  3. Renting the car - is there a rental place right near the port? Was it expensive to rent for just a few hours? Thanks! :)

We rented a car the last time we were in Freeport, to drive around at our leisure. Lucayan National Park is very interesting ... there is a really neat underwater cave system (one of the largest in the world), and Gold Rock Beach is simply amazing ... void of tourist crowds and very pristine.
  4. You did all of this with a tour company? Or on your own? It sounds like you had a wonderful day. We are going to be in Freeport next month and I am still undecided about what I want to do while there. My last time there, we spent the day at Junkanoo beach but I want to do something different this time. :)

It is not too far for a day trip. I just got back. You could probably hire a local taxi to take you there. I booked through Viator with H. Forbes, which is a local tour company. As soon as we walked off the ship to the excursion/taxi area, I could see their buses. Unfortunately for me, the Carnival Freedom was stuck in some storms and delayed arriving, and the tour had left without us. The guides couldn't have been more friendly and helpful - they got us on another bus and raced us across the island to their next pick-up stop at the hotels to catch us up to the tour. We hopped on and they gave us great information on the bus about the local history and areas we were seeing. Very informative and interesting. We arrived at Lucayan National Park and quickly toured the small caves, then headed across to Gold Rock beach where we had about an hour or so on our own. It's a beautiful beach! After leaving Lucayan National Park, we went to Banana Bay for a lunch break (at our expense) and more beach time. We had another hour and a half or so here, and the beach here is just as beautiful if not more so! Food was delicious! We hopped on another bus which stopped at a rum cake place and souvenir shop for about 30 minutes, then back to the port with plenty of time to spare (hours to spare!). We spent some more time walking around the port area, drinking and shopping.

We loved Freeport! I'd heard less than stellar reviews about Freeport, and it's true you arrive in a more industrial area. Take an excursion and see more of the island - it's lovely and far less crowded than Nassau. The people are great and the beaches are beautiful!

  5. If you are asking specifically for beach ideas in Freeport I highly recommend Gold Rocks Beach. Absolutely beautiful! It rivals almost anything else in The Bahamas or Caribbean. A cab can take you. Our Lucaya is also quite good and very popular, although not sure of the current condition. Freeport got hit pretty good by Hurricane Matthew last year. When we docked in November the port had just re-opened and Lucaya was not yet open to the public. Plenty of places near there to grab lunch as well. Other things to do in Freeport are hiking the Lucayan National Forest which is what we did our last time there and really enjoyed it!

Freeport has a lot to offer but gets a bad rap since anything worthwhile requires travelling from the immediate port area. Tripadvisor also has a lot of good ideas.

Hi. Is Gold Rocks Beach an ideal location to take a 2 year old and 5 year old? Are there bathroom facilities or restaurants on this beach? We will be in Freeport on Aug 15th.

  6. All set to sail aboard Carnival Liberty this June 2nd. This will be our first visit to Jamaica. Booked today to spend our day with Courtney. It will be my sister, our two 16 year old daughters and I. Based on some of the things I've heard/read about Jamaica, makes me kind of nervous for us 4 girls. Hoping Courtney can relieve me of my anxiety.

This is my 2nd cruise so I still feel abit of a newbie. I have a few questions... 1) If we purchase alcohol from any of the intown merchants, are we permitted to carry this back onto the ship? 2) If we visit the spice lady and decide to purchase her spices...are we allowed to carry them back onboard? 3) Which might two 16-year old girls find to be the most fun...the Blue Hole or River Tubing? 4) And last but not least and please forgive my ignorance...but what exactly is a juicy patty?

    Thanks! :)

  7. My sister and I will be traveling w/ our 16 year old daughters to Nassau in 2 weeks via Carnival Destiny. Without spending alot of money, but yet allowing the girls a great time, which beach would you all recommend? Would like something all inclusive if possible?

    Our first cruise!
