Reading what you posted might lead some to believe that these guests are being fully reimbursed, but that is not the case.

They missed the ship in Sao Tome. They then traveled to Gambia, but that port stop was cancelled due to the tides. Then they had to travel to Senegal where they finally boarded the ship.

NCL is only reimbursing them for the travel from Gambia to Senegal (due to the stop in Gambia being cancelled). They are not being reimbursed for anything else that they spent.

What a horrible precedent to establish regardless of the amount paid.  Dock runners who don't make the ship will from now on have their hands out.  Courts too will now recognize that a policy of reimbursement has been established and through the Reasonable Person Standard, others now have the reasonable expectation of financial payment.

  2. The South Carolina couple were interviewed on The Today Show this morning.  During the interview Mrs. Campbell said that they hadn't decided if they would rejoin the ship at the next available port because they didn't feel "safe" on how things were handled.  (keep in mind, all their possessions are onboard).  Rather than accept responsibility they're acting like pouty, petulant children with hands on hips as if to say "I'm picking up my ball and going home!"

Fortunately, as the story came up for discussion amongst the hosts later, Al Roker stepped up to be the adult in the room and basically said, you know the rules and yes, you'll get left behind.

If they made exceptions for these eight to board, what then is the magic number?  Does the ship wait for the first 5 that are late...the first 15.....the first 25?

  3. Jean,

I plan to check Big Lots from time to time for the right (low carb) products. Depending on what they are purchasing for resale, it can be sort of hit-or-miss.

Love those Chocolate Mint bars. Glad I bought 10 boxes at $2 each. As ,I only have them occasionally, it will be a while before I make my next purchase.

  4. Some stats:

    I'm a 50 year old male at 5' 9"

On January 6th my weight was 193

Today, my weekly weigh day, I tipped the scales at 173.

20 down and 8 to go.

On 1/6 I gave up diet sodas cold turkey. I'm absolutely convinced that the artificial sweeteners then fueled my insatiable sweet tooth...overall snacking really.

Anyway, after starting Atkins and actively seeking a variety of Atkins-friendly foods, to get away from simply the bacon, eggs, cheese...... I became very comfortable with my choices.

Oh, and exercise. I don't miss a day, not one. At the gym I do one hour of treadmill at 3.7 mph with a TV and earplugs. The time goes by fast. After that (depending on the day) I then either lift weights for about 25 minutes (day "A") or I do about 25 minutes of ab exercises (day "B") To finish off I treat myself to steambath. I imagine I'm in a steamroom on a cruise ship winding down for the day as we approach the dinner hour.

I'm not there yet but I feel much better, I'm wearing pants and belts that I haven't worn in years (but they're still in style) and I have all of you to thank for your encouragement and words of advice through this forum.

  5. I enjoy having some sharp cheddar grated on a salad or simple a few cubes as a snack. It tastes good and satisfies my hunger.

I find that it, uh...slows me down in terms of regularity. Do any of you find that to be the case? I'm drinking plenty of water but I notice that cause-and-effect when it comes to cheese.

    Your thoughts?

  6. Having never been insdie a Big Lots store, I stopped at one the other day out of curiosity.

Looking in the food section I stumbled across a very affordable and Atkins-friendly treat/reward. They had several boxes of South Beach Chocolate Mint bars. These things are incredibly tasty and I only allow myself to have one after I have lost a pound.

Sweetened with sugar alcohol, they have not stalled me at all. The net carbs are 6 per bar. The Big Lots price on this occasional treat...... $2 for a box of 6 bars. Again, only an occasional treat.

  7. My dh and I buy the egg beaters from costco in bulk. You can make a really fast omelet or scrambled eggs with them. They have 30 cal and 1 carb per 1/4 cup. You just shake up the carton and pour it into the pan, very fast and easy. On Sundays we hard boil a carton of eighteen eggs and keep them in the fridge for quick snacks during the week, if I'm running late I just grab one and eat it at work.

    A similar habit:

Rather than cooking bacon as eaten, I cook 1 to 2 packages at one time then freeze the pieces. At breakfast I simply pull a couple of pieces from the freezer, zap them in the microwave for 15 seconds as I cook a couple of eggs then I'm good to go.

  8. I was perusing some of the other Lose Before You Cruise threads today and came across a quotation that struck me as quite motivating. It simply reads,

"Nothing tastes as good as thin feels"

To me it emphasizes the point that "tastes" (while we certainly should relish them) are but a brief enjoyment. The benefits of a little (or a lot) of sacrifice ultimately yield more long term enjoyment.

  9. CC:

Great job! Just curious, how tall are you? male or female? and your age?, also when did you start on Atkins?

I started at 193 on 1/5, I'm down 16 with 12 to go, I'm male and just turned 50 years old.

Again, great results and motivating for us all!

    Thanks

  10. A door sign? What?

I've prepared on WORD, a sign that lists vertcally down the center of the 8.5 x 11 page destinations such as: formal dining, buffet, pool, gym, theater, kids club.

On the first day as we arrive in our room, I tape it to the back of our door and with a sharpee, draw an arrow for each destination showing WHICH DIRECTION we should turn when leaving our room to get to the desired destination.

It helps us get our bearings on those first couple of days as we learn the lay of the ship.

Sure saves a lot of, "now which way is the pool??"

  11. First, thank you all for your encouragement and advice. This is a nice forum...very supportive.

While at Walgreens today as I was picking up a prescription for my daughter, I noticed some sugar-free hard candies near the pharmacy counter.

They're made by Regal Dynasty and are called, "Mixed Fruit Hard Candy". They are zero net carbs, use Splenda as the sweetener and taste delicious. The size AND taste is much like a Lifesaver candy. It certainly takes the edge off but one would also not want to eat them non-stop. In fact the label mentions that eating in large amounts could have a laxative effect.

Anyway, a nice treat once in a while.

  12. NMCruzzin,

3.7 is a pretty brisk walk on the treadmill, but I gotta tell ya, having a TV on the treadmill with numerous cable channels makes all the difference. Being caught up on the end of a movie and I want to see how it ends...I've found myself actually re-starting the treadmill after 60 minutes just to see the ending. It's a very good gym overall. Since I can work out mid-day, there's never a shortage of equipment.

My wife, sad to say, hasn't been able to keep it off. She moved away from Atkins a few years ago but more importantly, changed her eating habits and does no exercise. It's too bad because she looked and had better energy than when she was 25 (and she's 50 now) I've offered to cook for us both and exercise with her but it's just not in her heart. I've offered oh so many times and I don't know what else I can do. I just hope and pray that she finds the internal desire to make a change. If she does I'll be there to help her all the way.

Thanks for letting me talk to someone.

  13. Thanks NMCRUIZN. Not knowing the definition of WOE was driving me insane.

We got off a 14 day on the Holland America Maasdam and I decided to lose some pounds (not just the cruise weight gain)

I started induction on 1/3 and I'm down 13 pounds so far. 15 to go.

At the gym I'm doing one hour of treadmill daily at 3.7 mph which after a couple of days you get used to. Each treadmill has its own TV so the time flies. Cardio steps up the metabolism...as simple as that. After that it's some lifting then the reward...... the steamroom. The steamroom reminds me of the one on the Maasdam. Not sure when our next cruise is (maybe 11 months off) but I decided I wanted to feel better on our next cruise. Plus, with all the selections, a cruise easily accomodates the Atkins program. My wife did it a few years ago and did well.
