  2. Eddie, thanks for reminding everyone about the Cruise Critic Log Book.

If you go back to the beginning of this thread and read the first two posts, there is information about the book being lost and then returned to the library.  Thanks to a very kind Cruise Critic member, the book now has stickers alerting anyone who finds it to return it to the library.

Eddie, hopefully you will find it in the library when you sail in a few months.  Please report back.

If others are sailing on the QM2 soon, please sign the book and report back.

I have received a quote from a British travel agent which seems to be a good price for a World Cruise on Cunard. My local, American travel agent has quoted a considerably higher price. I have never booked with a British travel agency before. Are there any pitfalls in doing so now?

Booking a World Cruise is a big investment.  I would want to book with a TA who is very experienced in booking Cunard World Cruises.  They often have lots of extra perks as well as excellent prices.  I would make a lot of phone calls and ask a lot of questions.  I would ask "How many Cunard World Cruises did you book in 2018 and 2019?"  Very best wishes!!  How exciting to be planning such a wonderful voyage.  I must admit I am very envious.

  4. I forgot to mention the QM in Long Beach.  I, too, passed up several opportunities to tour the ship thinking that it might be sad.  However, I finally decided to do it and I am so glad that I did.  It has probably been five years since I was there so I don't know what the current condition of the ship is like.  Even though the upkeep of the ship was not perfect, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the ship.  It brought back a lot of good memories.

  5. Many thanks, Smitheroo for starting this very interesting thread.  It is so much fun to read the memories of those who sailed on the original Queen Mary and other ships during that era.  I sailed on the original Queen Mary in 1967.  I was sailing with two college friends from New York to Southampton.   We were sailing in B143 in Cabin Class.  It was a very small cabin but I was very impressed by the rest of the ship.  I remember the exciting sail away from New York City with many spectators and lots of streamers.

We had the same table and waiters for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I had never eaten in such a magnificent restaurant and was overwhelmed by all the menu selections.  Fortunately, I still have some of the  menus.  We shared a table with other young people and it was a lot of fun.  Our British waiter was very kind to us and encouraged us to try new things.

There was very little organized entertainment on the ship.  We enjoyed the movies and the musical programs.  We went to the very small gym and sat outside on deck.  We played card games and board games with some of our table mates.

Our captain was John Treasure Jones.  He had the honor of being the last captain of the ship when she sailed from Southampton to her current home in Long Beach.  He retired after that voyage.

We, also, took the boat train from the Ocean Terminal to London.

I never sailed on the QE, but I was fortunate enough to tour her when she was in Ft. Lauderdale in 1969.  When she was retired as a passenger ship, she was moved to Ft. Lauderdale.  The plan was that she would become a major tourist attraction.  Unfortunately, she was only there a couple of years because of financial problems.   She was then taken to Hong Kong.  In 1972 while she was being converted into a floating university, she burned.  (This is my memory of the final years of the QE.  Those of you who are ship historians may have corrections and additions.)

I didn't sail on another Cunard ship until the arrival of the QM2.  Since I had sailed on the original QM, I was very interested in the plans for the new ship.  I was also eager to sail on her.  I assumed it would be one sailing and marking that off of "my bucket list".  My husband and I had a lovely voyage on the QM2 in 2004.  What I didn't expect was that we would fall in love with the ship.   We have since sailed on  her several times and look forward to our next opportunity to get back on board.

Someone mentioned the reunions on the QM2 for those who sailed on the original Queen Mary.  I have attended several and they are always fascinating.  In the early years of the QM2,  they seemed to have them on every voyage.  They now seem to be held on transatlantic voyages.  It is always so interesting to hear the memories of those who sailed on the QM.  We have met WWII veterans and war brides.  We have also met some who were crew.  It is usually a lovely mix of passengers and a delightful event.

Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to share these memories.

  6. We requested the refund of two FCDs on March 26.  We were told that they would be refunded to our credit card in 30 days.  They were refunded to our credit card this week.  So it took approximately 70 days.  Good luck to all of you who have requested refunds.  Hopefully everyone will get them soon.

  7. We have changed cabins in our booking and changed cabins on the ship.  I would first try to change your cabin in your existing booking.  Your travel agent or Cunard should be able to tell you which cabins are available for both segments of your voyage.  If you are simply changing the booking from one cabin to another within the same class, that should not change anything about your booking.  Again, your agent or Cunard should be able to tell you all the options available.  This is a very easy thing to do and there should be cabins available since your cruise is for next year.

We have also changed cabins on a voyage.  It was a little inconvenient but not that bad.  If you can book cabins on the same deck that helps tremendously.  Sometimes you  even keep the same cabin attendant.  We were fortunate that they moved our clothes on the hangers.  Our experience was that Cunard tried to make things as easy as possible.

Good luck with whatever option you choose.  Have a fabulous voyage.

It was such fun reading through all of the comments from 2017 - and a good excuse not to get the packing done!

I agree!!  Reading through the Log Book is great fun!  I love seeing the Cruise Critic names.  It brings back so many wonderful memories.  Lesley, I hope you had an amazing voyage!!

The QM2 Log Book is alive and well, and residing in the library :).

I had forgotten all about the log books - I ran up to the QM2 library and signed it, so now it has a 2019 entry. The librarian knew exactly what I was looking for!

Oh, Lesley!!!  Thanks so much for checking on the Log Book.  What great news that it is right where it should be and that the librarian is familiar with it.

We are lucky enough to be boarding QV on Sunday in Southampton on a trip to Iceland. I will definitely be looking for the log book in the library to sign. What a lovely tradition.

Please ask about the Log Book while you are on QV.  If you find it in the library, sign it and encourage other Cruise Critic members to do the same.  After your voyage,  please reply to this thread and let us know if you found the book.  If not, someone may want to start a new log book on the QV.

  11. Today, something reminded me of the Cruise Critic Log Book on the  QM2.  The last post on this thread was 2017.  Has anyone signed the book recently?  Those of you who have followed the story of the book, know that it was lost for a while.  Thankfully it was found and returned to the library.  One of our very thoughtful Cruise Critic members placed a label on the book asking that if found, it should be returned to the library.  Hopefully it is still there.  The next time you sail on the QM2, go to the library and ask for the book.  You can sign it and read the notes that others have left.

Is this the same shareholder benefit request form that Cunard emailed you? I had forgotten all about it, but this form for US shareholder benefit requests was attached to an earlier thread from September/October 2017 titled "Shareholder Credit".

I haven't used a form for previous shareholder benefit requests (just a cover letter containing the requested information), but if Cunard would prefer us to use this form and this is still the correct form, I'll use it for future requests.

Bluemarble, thanks for posting the link to the shareholder benefit request form.  We filled it out and mailed it (along with our proof of stock ownership) to the California address two weeks ago.  Today, I contacted our TA to make sure it had been received.  She sent an updated booking showing that the shareholder benefit is now included in our OBC.  So our experience using the form and mailing it to California was successful.  I agree with others that it would be extremely helpful if Cunard would send an email showing that they received the form.

The Cunard post-cruise coach transfer from the Brooklyn cruise terminal to LaGuardia airport costs $40 per person if booked in advance and $49 if booked on board.

We have used that coach transfer on several occasions. Because of ongoing construction at LaGuardia, the service has not been all that great lately. A year ago, the coach only dropped off passengers at terminal B and at the arrivals level rather than the departures level. Earlier this year, the coach was only able to drop off at terminal C arrivals (cars where allowed to drop off at terminal B but coaches were not). In both cases, passengers with flights departing from other terminals were on their own to use the airport's shuttles to get where they needed to be.

Thanks so much Bluemarble.  This is very helpful information.  We have always used a car service to get to LaGuardia.  Because we have a large amount of OBC, we were considering the Cunard transfer.   The spa may be calling my name!!😁

  14. Pepper, thank you for sharing this sad news. Salacia was a frequent contributor to the Cunard Forum. We will all miss her wit and her love for Cunard ships. My deepest sympathy to her husband and her family.

  15. Hi Bob,

It is wonderful to hear from you. So glad you are still cruising and have plans to sail on QM2 very soon. I'm delighted that you plan to sign the CC log book. I do hope our paths cross on another voyage very soon. One meets the nicest people on the QM2. Best regards to Beatrice.
