  1. I understand it is for bookings made from today.

I should have made it clear that although the new directive came into force on 1st July, the cancelled cruises on Oriana are covered under the existing 1992 regulations. The new directive just adds more protection.

  2. The new rules come into force today for new bookings which add additional protection, but its the existing rules that I don’t think P&O abide by.

Here is a quote from the ABTA website

    What is a package holiday?

The Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 define a 'package holiday' as follows:

    • The holiday must cover a period of at least 24 hours or involve overnight accommodation.
    • The holiday must consist of a combination of at least two of the following components:

    • Transport (for example, flights, trains, coaches and ferries - free transfers from the airport to a hotel would not be included)
    • Accommodation (this should be significant - it would include a berth on a cruise ship but not on a cross-channel ferry)
    • Other tourist services that form a significant proportion of the package (for example, car hire).
    • The holiday must be sold at an inclusive price.”
  3. The new Package travel directive comes into force today which made me think. P&O have cancelled cruises for many people on Oriana without offering an equivalent cruise or any real form of compensation (not £50 obc) and if a cruise is a package holiday, it is contrary to package holiday regulations.

Or do P&O just not care?

  4. I don’t know if anyone else has seen this crew review site. It’s quite interesting and shows most of the crew that posted a review are happy in their job

    https://www.indeed.co.uk/cmp/P&O-Cruises/reviews

Also a very interesting review about P&O from a former entertainment manager

Trying to move into the future with one foot firmly planted in the past. Trying to reinvent itself by abandoning it's past core values that created a loyal customer base (that is the envy of other companies) by absorbing competitors working practices. No innovation.

Hardest part of the job is getting shoreside management to understand the client expectations and thus support the ships efforts.”

  5. No

But look at the math. A cabin Steward handles 10 to 15 cabins per day. Average two passengers per cabin. The cabin pays 14 pounds day 210 pound a day 15 cabins.\

If half is cabin and half waitstaff than means the Steward collects 105 pound a day or over $145. Do you really think the cruise line is giving the steward 105 pounds a day or 3000 pounds a month in service fees? 3000 punds is $4200 dollors a month.

Lucky to get a total of 5 to 10 pounds a day or about 300 pounds a month.... $430 Extra dollars a month? The company is the one who is making a killing here, getting gust to cover payroll.

Or look at it this way and this is why they push so hard. About 1900 cabins if 2 passengers per cabin at 14 pounds a day almost 27,000 pounds a day... not a small amount.

Exactly, what has suprised me is that it’s taken so long for a lot of us to come to this conclusion

  6. I’m suprised there hasn’t been any mention on here about the upcoming changes to the loyalty club. Especially from Caribbean members, having to cruise a minimum 15 nights a year to keep their loyalty status, its a bit harsh.

  7. World cruise will have to wait for another year as didn't think much of Arcadias itinerary and it's the only one sailing from the uk in 2020 [emoji20] was hoping for one like the Auroras a few years ago that went up to Japan and down round South Africa...

What an unimaginative world cruise, just the same old ports and only 27ports in 99 nights.

  8. Indeed! The OP who appears to have many undisclosed sources didn't say when this alleged discussion took place, presumably it was during the Port & Stilton when by then a few glasses of wine had been consumed and not just the bow ties were being loosened.

as it turns out my undisclosed source was correct with regards to the alcohol policy.

  9. During a Peninsular lunch recently one of the guests at our table said that he thought P&O standards were dropping, the senior officer hosting our table replied that he thought P&O was heading towards being the Walmart of cruising, pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap! I think they are more likely to become the Ryanair of cruising.

  10. Well, we can live in hope. That would certainly get my vote. We have ships that are free of children. Why not have one that’s free of the stench of smoke? Awaiting incoming.....;)

Incoming..................or one thats free of anti smoking fanatics, smoking areas are clearly defined if you don't like it don't go there. Oh, bye the way I'm a non smoker.

  11. We are currently on Adonia and a reliable source (not another passenger) told us that carnival are currently negotiating with an unnamed company to sell Adonia and to expect an announcement in the next couple of months.

Make of that what you want, I’m just passing on what we were told.

  12. I certainly didn't mean that the cruise season is more important than the plight of the islanders. My meaning was that it is only about 7 weeks until the season and just wondered if the ports would be ready to receive visitors and if P&O will visit different ports instead, that was all.

You have to be careful how you word things on here.

That's the trouble with the internet, there's always someone ready to shoot you down.

If some of the people had read your original post properly they would have seen that you were not worried about your cruise but just starting a topic for open discussion.

FWIW we are on Adonia TA and while I'm not worried about our future cruise I am interested in how its going to change.

  13. On the ask P&O Site here they seem to have added the word “small” or am I mistaken?

“We will generally allow a small, reasonable amount to be taken on-board for you to enjoy in your cabin however, taking bottles of alcohol into restaurants or lounges will incur a corkage fee of £15 (prices are subject to change) per item (any size) per occasion.”

  14. "I've heard it on good authority ". If you are not prepared to name your source, you shouldn't be spreading rumours that can't be substantiated. This only causes alarm amongst P&O customers who have booked cruises under the booking conditions at that time.

FWIW we have a nine future cruises with P&O all booked when room service was mostly free but it didn’t stop them changing that, and while I’m not prepared to name my source either I was told on this years worldly the exact same thing by a senior officer. They are Fed up of passengers abusing the privilege and drinking brought on alcohol on deck.

  15. Sorry to hear that. I assume this will be your last cruise with P&O and you will be moving to a cruise line which offers free room service as it is clearly such an important feature for you.

I was always led to believe that sarcasm was the lowest form of wit.

Furthermore I tend to agree with the OP.. we have several cruises booked with P&O and when we booked, room service was mostly free. In the past we have used room service regularly so I'm not very impressed.

  16. It is best not to go over the top and taking to much advantage as they might decide to go down the American route(they are owned by Carnival) and restrict alcohol brought on board and then as we are a captive audience they will make a lot more money.

    Love RCCL and P&O.

Whilst on the Arcadia recently I heard from a reliable source that this is exactly what Carnival intend to do with P&O. and in the not to distant future.

  17. Worry not. We booked select guarantee cabin on Britannia cruise taken last April and we had a very nice upgrade to A deck. We paid for the lowest price balcony cabin and the cabin we were allocated would have cost substantially more had we booked that cabin at the start. Cruise was booked direct with P&O as was no cheaper to go through our agent who I understand now only receives a very small commission. Our friends have just been on Aurora and loved it. Enjoy.

We always book with an agent and get a minimum of 5% discount on all cruises. You can get 4% cash back if you book direct with P&O through Quidco

  18. And, while I appreciate that P&O make up any deficit in the overall pot, there become pressure on P&O to 'up' the sum to the rest of us who leave the auto tips in place.

And therein lies the problem, as the auto tips rise each year to compensate for more people removing them, more people will remove them. It will be an ever increasing spiral until they either become compulsory or they are included in the price of the cruise. I don't know why P&O just don't include them in the price now and just lower some of the on board credit they are giving away to offset it.
