  1. I have used this card for years. You receive 1 point for each dollar amount. If you accrue 80,000 points, that translates to $800 off a cruise. I just cashed in $1200 off a cruise

I thought they only gave you 1.5% off a cruise (or any statement balance) if you had 100,000 points. So if you had waited until you had 100,000 points, you would have gotten $1,500 off the cruise OR a statement credit in the amount of $1,500!

  2. There is so much completion for your business in the cruise world, and so many choose based on 'the best price for the ship or company' they want to sail with. That's good for all of us. IF you want the extras ($500 pictures, $1,000 beverage packages, or shore excursions through the cruise line) you can choose to buy them. Be my guest. It keeps us 'purer' or 'cruise often' cruisers enjoying cheaper cruise prices, knowing some people want all those extras. Witness the mad rush for the watches and $10 jewelry out in front of the shops. Just stay away from there...it's a good time to find a beach chair, actually!

I have no trouble with people buying or not buying the extras. We just don't buy many. Plus we are shareholders in CCL and RCCL and NCLH, so it truly doesn't bother us for these companies to make good profits.

I am being a bit facetious, but it's your own CHOICE to enjoy the low cruise rates and either do or don't succumb to the upsells. There are private places on every ship where you can enjoy peace and quiet if you choose. Or say No, thanks, and walk on

Cruises are increasingly popular for families, singles, and seniors. They are the best vacation buy in the world of travel. Do it and do it 'your way'!

  3. I don't know if knowing or not knowing is better.

I've always been of the mindset...if I'm on the ship, I will deal with unpleasantness that happens when I am gone when I get home. The ship is a haven of bliss. Galveston (as of Monday) seems to be doing well. The weather channel coverage has been the best...but...maybe you should be prepared...things are not exactly being over dramatized. It is really bad in Houston and the SW area.

My opinion...if anyone had flights scheduled: get off in New Orleans while you can. (Harvey expected to dump some precip there around Thrs/Fri.)

If you have a vehicle at the port...not sure what will be best. If your gas tank is full enough to get you home, I'd try it (depending on whether Harvey goes back out to Gulf and restrengthens for another swipe). If I was going to gas up on the way home? I'd get off in NOLA and wait a week, pay the parking fees.

Why would you get off in NOLA and stay a week with 6 people staying in a hotel, eating out, then renting a car to get back to Galveston? When Carnival is housing them, feeding them ,entertaining them and will get them back to Galveston free when it's safe.

Aggie, you are smart and you have the best attitude. Enjoy the rest of your extended vacation and deal with matters when you get home instead of now during the panic when you can't even reach your insurance agent? Hoping you find your home in as good a shape as your attitude!

  4. RCCL has DENIED our Shareholder Credit the last 4 cruises, saying wrong things like we are on an interline (for employees...we are NOT employees) or ANY special rate. It's nearly worthless. Even though I try for every cruise on RCL and Celebrity, they have ALL been turned down.

Carnival and its partners NEVER turn down the Shareholder Credit unless you are on a totally free CRUISE.

  5. I just called tonight (1/20/16) and was told for 20,000, I could get $200 OBC or $300 statement credit, as someone already stated above. MUCH better to use as statement credit. I now have 32,000 points, and the rep told me I could get at $450 credit for 30,000, so it's the same proportion.

I assume 50,000 points would be $750, but I never had this many. It wouldn't make sense for it to be $500, when you get $450 for 30,000 points!

My friend Patty saved to 100,000 points, and she got $1,500 off on her cruise PLUS $1,500 in statement credit last year.

The rep on the line tonight couldn't answer that question. She said it 'automatically appears for them when they put in how many points you have.'

For instance, I have 32,000 and she said I could use 30,000 for $450....that's all her computer would tell her.

They don't want you to know this!!!

Just remember this: You have to have cruised on Carnival within the last 18 months to get the 1.5x on your statement as a credit. That's CASH to me. Don't let the 18 months go by without redeeming for a statement credit is the GOAL.

  6. ...for the very informative post. It will be so helpful when we take this cruise beginning March 15 Southbound, Hong Kong to Singapore. We are on a package that includes Emirates Airlines to Dubai for 3 nights, then fly to Hong Kong and have 2 days there, with overnight on the ship, plus 2 nights on the end in Singapore. Really looking forward to this package of land and cruise!

Our plans are set for most places...the most exciting thing is Tea at the El Burj right ON my birthday! Tea there is $168 US but is a 7-course meal and the only way to get into that hotel is to have a reservation for tea or a meal or a room!

  7. Going on the Millenium on March 15 from Hong Kong to Singapore, so we are super interested in your wonderful postings so far, but especially on your actual trip! Our trip is a Celebrity package with economy airfare on Emirates to Dubai for 3 nights in hotel, and then to Hong Kong for 2 nights, then 14-day cruise that ends with another 2 nights in Singapore hotel.

We will be gone 24 days, but will have less than half the luggage you have! One large wheeled suitcase each, plus backpack or large tote on plane! But will probably buy enough to have to buy extra suitcase on way home!

We will look daily for your great posts and pictures.

P.S. We have 3 private tours set up for Vietnam and 1 overnight private tour set up for Bangkok. We found others on Cruise Critic to join our private tours.

Will live through you until our March trip. Love to have your suggestions for Hong Kong and Singapore.
