  1. I've heard ( as of last year ) that some ships play dumb and tell people the dining rooms are NOT open on embarkation day. Is that no longer true?

The head waiter will cheerfully seat everyone up to the point that the dining room begins to reach capacity of the wait staff and at that point will try nicely to divert people to the buffet unless they insist on being seated.

We find it to time consuming to eat lunch there on the first day since we're unpacking, checking out our table with the Maitre D', etc. which we like to have finished before early dinner.

  2. Laundry

    Shirt/blouse-$3; Formal shirt/blouse-$3.75; T-shirts-$2.25; undershirts-$1.25; undershorts-$1; slips-$2; bra-$1.50; handkerchiefs-.75; socks-$1; nightgown/PJs-$3.25

    Cleaning

    Evening dress-$10.50; dresses-$8.50; suit 2 pieces-$9; jackets-$5; trousers/pants/slacks-$4.50; skirts-$4.50; coats-$7.50; shirts/blouses-$3.50; sweaters-$4.50; polo/golf shirts-$3; shorts-$3.25; vests-$2.50; ties-$2.50

These were the prices from the last copy of the laundry services form that I kept. All clothing except for undergarments are pressed & on hangars and shirts can be either starched or not. Charge for pressing only is 80% of cleaning prices. Sometimes during a cruise they will have a special on a bag of laundry for about $15-$20 but I don't have the exact amount because I've never done it. We can get a couple pairs of pants & shirts in a bag but not too much more. All Princess ships have self service laundromats & as I recall it's $2 for the washer & $2 for the dryer.

They increased the laundry prices some time last year.

  3. Then it's not a black friday sale!! In the past, on other cruise lines, we've gotten a free tote bag (real nice canvas one) for anyone who purchases something $10 or more before 9 am, coupons for the first 50 people in line for $5 or $10 off your purchase (depending on how much you spend), extra low prices on liquor for the early risers and stuff like that.... not just the t-shirts, watches, gold by the inch stuff they always have.

It sounds like Princess doesn't really do "black friday" just the regular stuff they always sell.

I think that's the key- other cruise lines- not that I pay that much attention to what their selling anyway. I only sit there listening to my iPod holding articles & waiting for the wife to finish browsing. :D

  4. As for Black Friday, the Ruby did have a 'Black Friday Sale'....mostly your typical t-shirts, watches, etc., but also some nice deals on make-up and souveniers.

    Enjoy!!

Funny thing is that they have that sale on every ship on every sailing all times of the year.

  5. Yes it was. We just got off the Emerald and reported our neighbors smoking in their cabin. The smell was coming into our cabin. The room steward knew they were smoking as well. We were told that unless they are caught with a lit cigarette in their hand nothing can be done because their room could smell smokey from their clothes. Just another example of Princess not enforcing it's own policies.

I really wonder what they would do if you took their picture as they were smoking & presented it for evidence?

  6. We just returned home from the Emerald. One night we were awakened by the smell of cigarette smoke in our cabin, about 2am. Since smoking has been banned in the cabins and on balconys I questioned the steward about what happens if folks are smoking in their cabins. He told me that only if the passenger is caught with a lit cigarette in their hands will he call his supervisor. Even if their cabin wreaks of smoke they will do nothing. His response was "I am here to make money. If I report someone for smoking they will get mad at me and not leave me a tip. They might even make bad remarks on the comment cards and then I will be in trouble with my supervisor. On the ship, I SEE NOTHING".

If Princess is unwilling to enforce their own rules, why should anyone else follow them.:mad::rolleyes::eek:

If he's so afraid of losing his tip for not enforcing the rule then he should also be afraid of losing my tip for non enforcement + an explanation on the comment card that he was the cause of it. There should be a neutral party to enforce the rule so he doesn't get involved, namely the Hotel General Manager.

  7. If the Christmas bread you're talking about is stollen, Publix has it the whole Christmas

season. It's my favorite treat, I grew up eating homemade stollen, and used to make it

myself. Now I just pick it up at Publix bakery.

I just by pass it since I don't like the chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit & nuts. I just wish they would learn how to make a simple apple pie in place of all the creamy sweet desserts they serve in the DR each evening.

  8. Do you have any examples of this? I was on a Christmas sailing last year and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Last early Dec on the Emerald they had this type of bread (I think they call it Christmas bread) and my wife expected to find it in Jan on the Crown but they told her it was only a seasonal item. The guy at the international cafe inquired from his boss if he could make hear a special batch but they said no. (we didn't ask).

I guess we'll have to wait till Nov & maybe they have it again.

Maybe they do something special for Easter?

  9. You get the bracelet free with a punch card that each port marks off that you've received that charm. Your first charm you buy at DI for $5, the rest are free. If you miss getting one or are sure you'll never sail to one of the ports that offers a charm, you can buy them online for $5 each (no shipping charges!) at DI's website. That's what I did, got 5 of them at one time for $25. I would have spent that much trying to get to the DI in Puerto Vallarta ($10 taxi to the Golden Zone) or Mazatlan ($10 taxi fare). So I figure I saved myself cab fare for the 5 ports, time lost finding the DI store, time wasted telling the sales man "no", and I avoided the temptation to look at all the pretty glittery jewelry screaming my name from the display case...

I realize that it's just a game to get people into the store but we're trying to get to every location & get a charm to show it. It's like the guy living next door to me, he's going to go to every baseball stadium before he dies. Everybody collects something. ;);)

  10. The only thing I ever got free was the bracelet. I don't have any charms - don't you have to buy them?

Yes & no. The way they have the program set up is that after presenting the card you receive on the ship, they first give you the bracelet without a charm & try to sell you the first charm for $5. Sometimes the bracelet is handed out with the charm collection punch card attached, sometimes not, but most of the time you'll receive the punch card.

Once you have the punch card all you have to do to get a charm for the particular location is show the card & you'll get a free charm. If the location only had 1 DI store & you were never going to return to that location & you didn't have a punch card I would say spend the money & get you first card but if the location is like St Thomas were there are 3 DI stores & a Tanzanite International, they give you a punch card with the free bracelet & I've see people spending the $5 to get a first charm when they could have walked out the first store & went next door for the free charm.

  11. Do you have to make a purchase to receive the free charms?

When you get the card at the shopping talk it entitles you to get a free bracelet and attached to that is a punch card that has all the different locations which have the charms. They try to sell you your first charm for $5 but you don't have to buy it. There are usually more than one DI stores on each island & you can now use that punch card to get a free charm at the other store. Tanzanite International also gives out the same charms.

My wife has never spent a dime for any charm at any location.

  12. When we were in the Caribbean this Jan Diamond International offered free charms for a charm bracelet in each port. Does anyone know if this is also offered in the ports for Alaska cruises? While not being top grade gold, they were nice reminders of the ports visited. Thanks!

I hope you didn't think there was any gold at all in them. ;);)

My wife has collected just about 3/4 of them - some day we might get them all. :p

  13.

Princess is in the process of putting lemonade on all their ships (for free) but I am not sure where it is offered free. Not sure if it is just the buffet or in the dining room also. Hopefully someone will comment on this.

The lemonade is available by request only in the buffet area (Island Princess) & not the dr.

They still don't have the self service machines installed on any ships I've heard about.

  14. The only time I've ever seen Princess hold purchases of alcohol has been when returning to the ship in St Thomas where people were boarding with 6 pack boxes of the stuff. If you had concealed it some what there wasn't any problem.

  15. Actually, this is one itinerary that changed due to the proposed PVSA interpretation.

We no longer overnight in Maui, and we get to see Ensenada from 7pm until 11:59pm. :D Might be able to experience ALL of the night life  .

I "usually" research any of my answers for CC also. There is always someone ready to point out your errors around here! By the way, thanks for what you bring to Cruise Critic.

Isn't the shopping wonderful in Ensenada. Things I've never seen before.

  16. Last year when we booked our Hawaii cruise, it was at 14 days, no Kona, and Ensenada was a very short stop. Don't remember how long, I just remember wondering if we would have time to get off the ship. At some point before I had to cancel it, maybe in December, we were notified of an itinerary change. Ensenada was going to be 6 or 7 hours.

I think Princess is really short changing themselves reducing the trip to 14 days. I've got to travel across country & spend a night in a motel just to spend only 4 days in Hawaii. :( They're not doing anyone any favors by spending more time in Ensenada. If & when we do another Hawaii trip I suppose we'll give HAL some consideration.
