  1. Thank you so much everyone - this is all helpful info! We do know how far it is to Seward & have a quote for $400 for taxi fare. We have four of us in our group, so it actually doesn't sound terrible. The bus is just under $300 for all of us.

I would like to verify times with Royal Caribbean - our setsail pass online says 2:30-6:30 & that's what they told me on the phone yesterday, but the last check-in time option on the app is 5-5:30, which is what is making me nervous. I'm not sure that we could drop luggage or check in before 11:30, because the earliest time is either 12:30 (on the app) or 2:30 (setsail pass).

In the past, Kenai Fjords Tours has taken care of our luggage, but they've taken it to Alaska Railroad, so I'm not sure they do that for a cruise. (We're using Kenai Fjords Tours, not Major Marine) It's a good point that they need to make it back for the train! We've done that twice without concern & as long as we can board the ship at 6, then it shouldn't be a problem.

  2. Hello! We've done a couple Alaska cruises, but they've been northbound. This summer, we're doing a southbound cruise on Radiance of the Seas, leaving from Seward. The ship leaves Seward at 8:00 pm. Right now, we have a shuttle bus booked to arrive in Seward (from Anchorage) around 9:45 with a Kenai Fjords tour from 11:30-5:30 and then directly boarding the cruise ship. We're second guessing whether this will be enough time - or if it will be too stressful! We've come up with another option - taking a taxi early in the morning from Anchorage (we wouldn't mind this as we'll still be on "home" time) to arrive in Seward by 7:00 & doing a 8 am Kenai Fjords tour. This would be done by 2 and allow a little more leeway for boarding the ship.

I'm wondering if any of you have done an 11:30 Kenai Fjords tour before boarding a cruise - is this something that is doable? If you were planning, which option would you choose?

    Thanks!

  3. We did our Alaska trip in mid-June 2015 and chose to do the land portion of the tour on our own so we could do exactly what we wanted. Even though it was more planning (which I actually love :) ), it was totally worth it! We stayed at Blue Horizon Hotel in Vancouver, didn't stay in Seward, and stayed at the Denali Lakeview Inn near the park, which we also loved. It's about 10 miles from the park (in Healy) and is kind of a cross between a B&B and a regular hotel - perfect for us! We rented a car to drive from Anchorage to Denali & back, so the distance didn't bother us and it was nice to be outside of the crowded entrance area. We just used Priceline bidding for our Anchorage hotels and ended up staying near the airport in nice chain hotels. We weren't in Anchorage for much time, so this suited us as well.

Overall we were very happy with all of our lodging. We loved doing the land portion on our own and would definitely recommend doing so. It's what we would do if (...will do when...) we go again.

  4. I've been reading your review with some amusement, because we were on the same cruise & were actually with you on the F.I.S.H.E.S. Tour. I believe we also saw each other in Vancouver.

I've been thinking about writing a review, but I could just copy & paste a good chunk of yours! :) We also stayed at the Blue Horizon in Vancouver & got breakfast at Tim Hortons. We whale watched with you in ISP, took the Nugget Lake hike in Juneau, and drove to Emerald Lake in Skagway. We took a Kenai Fjords tour, but a longer one. We also did the Goldstar service on ARR to Anchorage but only stayed one night there. We rented a car, drove to Denali & stayed at the Lakeview Inn! We did a Wonder Lake shuttle (a little later than yours) and drove back to Anchorage to fly home.

I'm a little surprised we didn't see each other more often! It sounds like you had as great of a trip as we did!

  5. Thanks for your response! What would your 5-night plan be? I think we're pretty stuck with 4 nights because of our traveling companions' work schedules, but I'm curious. :)

I'm sure that it's the drop off fee. We only looked at one rental agency so far, but it was $180 more to do a one-way. The flight is about $100 more home from Fairbanks.

  6. We're working on planning our cruise for June 2015 & are hoping to book airfare soon. When we first started planning, we were planning to take the train or a shuttle between Seward & Anchorage, then to Denali, and then on to Fairbanks to fly home.

Now we're thinking that we will take the train to Anchorage, but then rent a car the following day to drive to Denali. We'll stay two nights in Denali, but then have the option to continue up to Fairbanks & spend a night there before flying home (to Minneapolis-St. Paul) or drive back down to Anchorage & spend another night there.

So, I need opinions - it will cost significantly more (between the one-way car rental & the flight home) to go to Fairbanks, but I'm sure it'd be a nice drive & there are different things to do an see in Fairbanks. Is it worth the extra money to finish our trip in Fairbanks? Or would we be better off heading back to Anchorage??

    Thanks!
