  1. The best outdoor views will be on deck 12, which is open all the way around the ship. That is also the deck (starboard, aft) where the Seaview cafe is located. They were usually open noon to six I think, without a cover charge. It will be listed in the Cruise Compass paper.

    Hi Again Grady,

Been loving your posts and pics. 12 more days until we sail. Getting down the luggage TODAY.

My wife asked if I could ask if you had any pics of the Daily Compass, possibly one of a Sea Day?

    Thanks

  2. We just got off the Jewel this morning and did the tour, the excursion was the high light of the cruise, we were able to get really close to both of the glaciers, with a bonus of the Jewel being late arriving to the glacier which gave us a longer time sitting out in front of the bigger south glacier. As a side note if you go, when you get to the south glacier make sure to find the mountain goats that are behind you as you look at the glacier we counted 8 of them, also after you get back on the ship we seen black bears on the starboard side shore looking for dinner. (If you ask Morgan or one of the other ladies they will pull a chunk of Glacier ice out of the water, wash it off and make you a Glacierita (margarita) from the ice or chill your pop, and will take a picture of you with your camera holding the iceberg.) As for weather, we hit the jackpot! sunny every day except our sea day Thursday. We came home with a great tan!

    Hi Spotfish,

We are on the Jewel of the Sea in two weeks, July 10th Sailing. What was this Excursion listed under? I cannot locate regarding this type of excursion. Would love to do this.

    Thank you in advance.

  3. No problem, hope it helps!

    Thank you DarthGrady.....

A little disappointed to hear the Alaska beer is not on tap, but will make the best of it.

I'm sure we will have great time.

From other posts I have read, if you go into your cruise with a negative attitude, you will have a negative cruise.

Go in with a positive attitude, and you will have a positive cruise.

We are traveling with some first time cruisers. Everyone is so positive about this cruise and looking forward to it, that nothing can deter from the experience.

Your cruise is what you make it, and we are going to have a fabulous time. Good Times, Good food, Good adventures, and most importantly, GOOD Friends to share it with.

    23 days and counting.

  4. Glad you folks are enjoying it, there's lots more to come. Hope you enjoy your cruises as much as we did!

    Hi DarthGrady,

Yet another soon to cruising on JOS. We depart on July 10th; 25 days to go.

I posted a question (or two) on another post to someone else who was doing this itenarery n June as well. If you can, might you address there during your review.

Was it warm enough to swim in the outside pool during the first couple of days? We are traveling with 4 children ages 11, 12,13,14 (not all ours).

Was their any Alaska Themed drinks of the day?

As the ship is now re-supplying in the North West vs the South East, did you notice any regional dishes or food.

Did they have Alaska Beer on Tap.

We are having trouble finding out about Themed nights or Pub Craw for the during the cruise. I know there is formal night, but was there anything else?

Was the solarium crowded on Sea Days? I'm planning on spending some quite time during sea days, or if I just want to get away. Our Party includes my wife and I, Three of her girl friends and 4 children.

Hope this is not too many questions. Looking forward to your review and the cruise.

  5. These photos are wonderful! Thanks for sharing. We leave for Alaska on the Jewel in only 12 days! Your pictures have me even more excited!

    Hi niklynn1,

Our Family and friends will be on the Jewel for this itinerary on the July 10th Sailing. We are having a Cruise planning party on Friday night. Was wondering if you could post some conents that may be Jewel Specific for this cruise when you return as I belive this is the firts time the jewel has done this itinerary.

Also for anyone who might know...

Since she is moving from a Carabbean itinerary to an Alaska itinerary, was wondering what type of changes if any they would do for Alaska? Are there Alaska theamed Drinks of the day? Is the food selections different due to supplies now being taken on board in the North West vs Sout East?

Any special Alaska Touches that they do?

    Thank you in Advance

  6. Hi all,

In an update to my question of any photo's of POA suite 11500 post dry dock, I have just returned from the April 12th sailing and can report that the suite is exactly as depicted in the following video posted on Jan 22, 2012.

It was a great suite, but smaller then one priced the same on deck 12...Suite 12502. If you want to compare, search for Video Tech's review of 12502 dated March 25, 2014.

I will not post any additional pics as they as not as good as the you tube video above.

Hope this helps anyone trying to decide between 12502 and 11500.

  7. We went with Hawaii Discount Car Rental which is basicly a car rental broker and selected eccom. They give you the best rate, but you do not know who you rent from until you book. I think we have budget in Maui.

Will post a review shortly after we get back. I'll be sure to get some pics of the snorkel trip.

  8. Forgive me if this question has already been answered...I've looked and not seen it, so I thought I'd just ask.

We are sailing on POA in October. We are doing research on Molokini Snorkel Tours (both with NCL and with private companies). If we choose to do one with a private company, we'd need to meet at Ma'alaea Harbor fairly early (7am-7:30am).

My question...how early can we get off the ship on the second day in Maui? Is it open to come and go throughout the port time, as long as we're back by 5pm?

Same question for Kauai...how early can we leave the ship on the second day there? We may be too tired by then to want to leave early, but it would be good to know.

I did email NCL, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Thanks for any help! Also, any recommendations on private Molokini Snorkel Tours, Luaus and rental car tips would be much appreciated! I've greatly benefited from some of your reviews here! :)

This is our first visit to Hawaii...my husband and I are going for our 25th anniversary! ;) We are super excited and I'm enjoying the research and planning part right now!

    Hi kjcombs89,

We are on the POA a week from Sat, 10 days to go.....

We booked the Molokini Snorkel Tour directly with Four Winds as we wanted this specific charter boat. If you book thru NCL, they use a few different charter Co and you get what ever boat has space. It was also cheaper to book on-line directly with boat charter co.

We are renting a car for the two days we are in Maui. Our snorkel tour is 0700am on day two of Maui. The difference in price between NCL and booking directly with the boat paid for the car rental. I cannot comment on how good the Four Winds is over the other boat operators, but I do belive NCL does also use the four Winds as one of there contract tour co's. Here is a link if you would like to check them out.

    Have fun

  9. Hi All,

For anyone on an upcoming sailing on POA, be advised that there is currently no Lava Flow into the ocean. Therefore the POA takes a different track from HILO to KONA. No Lava Sail By. Following is a April 2014 question to and response from NCL regarding this.

. As our suite is on the port side, what is the best viewing site on the ship for the lava flow between Hilo and Kona.

I have been advised by the ship there is no visible lava flowing into the ocean at this time, actually this have been the case for a year, therefore they do not sail pas the volcano in route to Kona.

  10. Thank you VideoTech for the feedback.

I got the Heads Up about the no lava flow from the pre-board concierge Arthur when I asked in an email for info on were a good spot on the ship was to view it. Given NCL is not forthcoming about this, I'll post a note shortly with the info from Arthur.

Glad you had a good cruise. Looking forward to the full review you are planning on posting. I will be posting PIC of 11500 upon my return as we looked at both 11500 and your cabin when we deciding. We choose 11500 because we thought the Bridge was too close and that there was the possibility of the crew being able to from the bridge onto the balcony of 12502. Suite 11500 has a smaller balcony, and maybe a bit smaller foot print in the cabin, but will compare with your PICS when we get there.

    Thanks Again for the reply.

  11. Haven't heard that Marblehead quote for a while, got married in Gloucester!

We just had an aft balcony on the Dawn Mar. 1st, we like the mini much better, more room, but love the aft so booked it (late booking, full suites were gone) Last year we sailed in a mini suite on dawn, booked a forward one so it wouldn't be under anything noisy, loved the size, I booked it for our friends that just traveled with us on Mar. 1 and they didn't mind being forward, very quiet, between suites, not much movement, you might want to try one of those, unless you need to be closer to the food venues!!

Forgot to mention that we left out of Tampa both times so have no idea about sailing out of Boston.

Wow, Me too on your Marblehead Quote. Lived in Marblehead for a wile years ago. Just had to post a comment as I had not heard that in some time. Something I say to myself now and then when I do something stupid.

We did an aft balcony on the NCL Star to Mexico a few years back for the same reasons you mention. Spent most of the time in the cabin on the balcony. It worked for us. Doing a Suite on NCL Pride of America for Wife's 50th B-day in 18 days. Got to try it at least once.

    Enjoy our trip.

  12. Hi VideoTech,

Thank you for the PICS. We are on POA in 11500 in a few weeks which is right under the suite you were in. I had heard that their was no lava flow so thank you for confirming that.

Quick question regarding DOWN TIME in the suite if I may.

Our suite is similar to yours, just but a bit smaller. As this cruise is Port Intensive, did you have much of a chance to really take advantage of the Suite Life? Do you have any recomendations or sugestions on getting the most from being in a Suite on POA with no Sea Days.

I've read almost every post I could find on POA, including your Roll Call Posts, I feel like I already know you. But as you just returned and have a fresh prospective, I was just wondering. If you were to do it again next week, what would you maybe do differently? Enjoy the Ship/Suite more, Spend more time in Port??

My wife cannot wait to use the Jacuzzi. Is it filled when you arrive or do you need to tell them when you ant to use it? Do they drain it each day and have to re-fill it when you want to use it?

    Thanks in advance.

  13. I assume you are in a haven suite as I don't expect to get a wine list choice... ;-).. Thanks for the information.... today is day 30... so maybe the letter will be here soon.

No Haven suites on POA, but we are in an owners suite for my wife's 50th B-day. Her Idea, I just get to tag along.:) 22 days and counting for us.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  14. We are in a penthouse suite on the POA and sail in 30 days.... we have only gotten a call right after we booked the trip about 3 months ago from a concierge I believe?

Anyway, we have letters regarding our luggage tags and basic information but nothing about pillow requests or anything else. Will we be hearing from anyone by phone or letter regarding these items prior to arriving at embarkation?

This is our first cruise, so not sure what to expect and when to expect it. I did email NCL about emptying our refrig for our personal non-alcoholic drinks, etc. and they did respond to that. Thanks for the CC tip about that.

    Hi KitinIowa,

We are in a suite on POA next month.

The letter you got with your luggage tags will also have the email address for the concierge Desk, but I have added it here.

    NorwegianConciergeDesk <NorwegianConciergeDesk@ncl.com>

You can send them any requsts or questions, but they can take some time in getting back to you.

If you have not already done so, join your Roll Call for your cruise. You can get a lot of info from others sailing your week. I would also suggest reading the Roll Calls from other POA sailings. There is a ton of great info listed.
