  1. We too are sailing leaving out of Stockholm in July as well. Crystal shows using FRIHAMNEN as port..  Any hotels that you would highly recommend if that is the case?   We have not figured out the transportation thing yet so would like it to be within some reasonable walking distance to things when we get there.

  2. What day of the week and what time would you be doing this?

On Black Falcon Ave in front of the cruise terminal you can catch the Silver Line SL2 bus to South Station where you have a free transfer to the Red Line Direction Alewife. Take any train and get on the front car to go one stop to Downtown Crossing where you transfer to the Orange Line Direction Oak Grove and go three stops to North Station. http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/

Coming out of the Orange Line you go out to Causeway St, cross the Street and walk left one block to Beverly St. Make a right and walk one block to Valenti Park and make a left on Valenti Way. Go one block and cross Washington St and the street is renamed Thacher St. walk 3 blocks to Pizzeria Regina.

Or you can take a cab for about $15. Uber would be less.

Print out a map if you're going to wander the North End.

thanks a bunch for the info.... we are coming in on a Monday. Just to confirm, is Uber allowed in Boston? I have never used it but thought about trying it out on this trip...

  3. We are on the Crystal Symphony coming into Boston late May...Can someone provide advice on how to get to the subway system from the port. We wanted to go to the original Regina Pizzeria on Thatcher but not sure how to get from ship to subway or is there a better option. Any feedback will be deeply appreciated...

  4. Superdave57 which sailing tour are you looking at doing? I highly recommend going on Aquidneck through SightSailing. It is always a good time on this schooner with a fun crew. They are located on Bowen's Wharf.

Unless you are going to the Visitor's Center to get a bus or taxi (it is also under construction) I would get tickets for the Breakers at the Breakers or online to save a bit of time.

I went with a company called On Watch Sailing... they were flexible with my time and only do a max of 6 so more private but Aquidneck was on my list. I am going to get tickets to Breakers and check into the Audio tour mention above. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

  5. My husband and I are regulars at the Mooring on Sayers Wharf. We usually sit at the bar but the view from the deck is lovely. It is one our favorite restaurants. They have wonderful chowder.

The Black Pearl is also a good choice. They will have a new patio by this summer as it is currently under construction.

If you have enough time Scales and Shells is a great place for fresh seafood as well. It is located several blocks down lower Thames Street. Head south from the tender dock on America's Cup and make a right at the 'wave' statue, Scales and Shells is several blocks down on the right.

Superdave57, Brick Alley Pub is known for their lobster rolls. They are located on upper Thames Street in Brick Market. When you get off of the tender, cross America's Cup to the shopping area called Brick Market.

thanks so much for the valuable info -

  6. Good news, you are the only cruise ship in port that day. Here is the cruise ship schedule, but the title of the schedule is a misnomer. The title s/b 2017 Cruise Ship Schedule for Newport, RI, not 2017 Perrotti Park Cruise Ship Schedule.

Perrotti Park is a small park on the land side of the tender docks. The site is too small to build on so it became a small park. Search Google maps for Perrotti Park, satellite photo.

Since it is early in the season, I don't think it will be crowded. You can buy tickets at the Visitor Center, at the Breakers itself, or online.

Also, something to consider is an Audio Tour of the Breakers. If this is available for your visit, it could save waiting time. The only problem I am having with this is the sentence in the last paragraph of the link supplied; the sentence is - Please check the operating schedule to determine the type of tours in effect. I've checked the operating schedule but could not find any mention of Audio Tours. If you are interested in this, a call to the Breakers is in order.

Thanks a lot... will take your advice...

  7. I was unable to confirm the starting time of 9:30am. What is your source? My source has the Breakers opening at 9am.

Anyway, get there before it opens. Use a public bus, taxi, or UBER. Be there waiting for the Breakers to open, but bus tours are taken before walk ups.

I'm making an assumption that you'll finish your tour by 10:30am. Exit the Breakers and walk east on either side street that borders the Breakers to get to Cliff Walk.

If you walk north on CW, you go towards the start; if south, towards the end, part of that walk is unimproved. Also, there are very limited exits on the walk south.

I think what you want to do is feasible, but a lot will depend on when your tour finishes and how much of CW you want to see.

As for a lobster roll, any restaurant along the waterfront serves them. As for the best, IDK.

I was wrong regarding the opening time of the Breakers, it is at 9:00am. Couple of followup question? Where do you buy tickets? Visitor center?at Breakers itself? I understand that I may not get in early due to excursions from ship which may cause me to miss noon sail excursion. What would you recommend as a plan B to see if the sailing is out? Last, is there a site that shows you what ships will be coming in that day cruise wise? Maybe it would be better to sail in morning and reverse things till afternoon but wasn't sure if breakers gets more crowded in afternoon - thanks for all the info SBtS

  8. Hello all, I need some time management help... our cruise is set to arrive Newport at 7:00am Sunday on 05/21/2017 with a departure time of 4:00pm. Things we wanted to do was the Breakers, Cliff Walk and I thought about a noon sail( 2.5 hrs). Can I do this. I know Breakers does not have tour till 9:30am on Sunday and I have not bought tickets through excursions. Waiting on advice before booking the sail since it may be odd man out. Need some help on this one... Short time in Newport plus I have to get to try one of those famous lobster rolls I have heard so much about...

  9. We used Uber when we were there last week. About $8 each way for the two of us in a private car.

Hey fellow Houstonian....Was there any issues with UBER. Quick to respond? We are on an early arrival and we have plans for a sail in the afternoon so we wanted to do Cliff Walk and see the Breakers in the morning... Doable? or Pipe dream? Never have used Uber but have heard many things. We too are just 2. Any feedback appreciated...

  10. We too are there for 4 nights in June and really looking for a nice hotel that doesn't require a car to get around. Most above sound like apts and that may be the answer but has anyone stayed and would recommend a proven hotel that they liked. I will look at recommendations listed above but hoping other feedback comes.

This is the site I used:

    http://www.aegeantraveller.gr/

Go to the lower part of the page. Under "Cruise Visitors - Oia Transfers - Direct", click on "Book Now.

This is what it says it includes:

"[Transfer to Oia by Speedboat & return to Fira by bus Departure[/b] from the old port of Fira by speedboat to reach in only 15 minutes Ammoudi bay at the bottom of the picturesque and traditional village of Oia.

There the partner agency will do the transfer by bus from the small harbor until the tourist parking of the village.

The pickup point of the bus to reach the capital of Santorini, Fira, will be at same place.

In Oia you will have 1 – 2 – 3 or maximum 4 hours of free time, every hour after the arrival it is available a transfer by bus as well included in the ticket, from Oia to Fira.

In Fira the free time depends from the departure time of the last tender to return back on your cruise ship. In the price of 20 euros is also included the ticket of the cable car to come down at the old port."

I'm not going until Nov. Let me know how it turns out for you.

    thanks a bunch

  12. Thanks for the review! It was very well done! :)

We leave on Jade in October and are really looking forward to it! We have also booked a private tour ( alas, not with Mr Theo) on Olympia and also on Santorini....not sure yet about Corfu or Mykonos yet??

We also have been on the Gem and did also enjoy "The Great Outdoors"! Not many people know it is there??

Thanks again for you in depth review!:D

If you don't mind me asking, what excursion did you book in Santorini.. I have looked at a great deal of them.... can't make up my mind. What sold you on the one you chose?

  13. http://aegeantraveller.rezgo.com/details/94535/speedboat-to-oia

I guess they meant the above site.

It includes a speedboat taxi to Ammoudi Bay (below Oia), then a shuttle up to Oia town, a bus ticket to Fira and at last a cable car down to your tender port. If you choose to walk down to the port and don't want the cable car, you will get this option for 15 EUR!

Yes, the above is a very good option and you may choose to opt for it on the day of your port of call too. The vendors have their booths just where the tender drops you.

There is one thing which I was told in another thread though - The speed boat to Oia wouldn't leave unless it gets filled. But I don't think that should be a problem in the summers.

We would be there on the 21st of Sept and we are thinking of this - Taking the cable car up to Fira (wait for the cable car tickets would be similar to the wait for the speed boat to start) and then a Bus to Oia (1.8 EUR) which would take about 20-30 mins.. and then back to Fira (1.8 EUR) and take a bus/Taxi to Santo Wines in Pyrgos (It is just about 4 Km) ...and back to Fira. If we are not late for the last tender, we plan to walk down during the sunset (pure intention of taking the pics)...

When would you be in Santorini? :)..

    RT

We are on the NCL Jade leaving the 3rd out of Venice. It arrives in Santorini on the 6th. thanks for the info

  14. ==============================================

I've already booked the tickets (2 for $40). I have heard from two more couples on our CC Roll Call that they have done the same thing. So I've decided to stop worrying about it. If they aren't at the Tender port, then we hopefully will be able to buy tickets from someone else.

I do plan to report back here how things go for us in Santorini. I hope you will let us know how your Sept. trip turns out.

what was the site that you got this from? It sounds very interesting...and if you don't mind, what again does it exactly include?

  15. Funny you mention these options, because that is exactly what we did during our most recent visit in April (our 3rd or 4th visit to Katakolon). Your best bet is to simply rent a car (it helps if you can drive a manual shift). There are several rental car companies within easy walk of the pier but we prefer a small local company that has good prices, is the closest to the ship, and is very friendly. They are Dionysios Diplas Tourism Enterprises and you can find their web site at rentacarkatakolo.gr and there are a few other agencies in town you can find on Google. Our rental car was a small vehicle (all we wanted) that cost us less then 50€ for the day. We drove directly to Olympia and then on the return journey we stopped at one of the beach resorts (about 20 min from Katakolon) for lunch. In April, it was too chilly for us to swim (there were a few brave souls in the water). To be honest, we were not impressed with the beach...but we enjoyed lunch.

    Hank

    Hank,

Seem to be following you in your posts. We are on the Jade in first week of September..Not sure what to do in Olympia and I am thinking about braving a car rental. I do drive stick..love it... would you do the same if you had to do it all over again in regards to Olympia...was this the best way to see the place and was the driving in the area dangerous or not for the weak? See excursions on the ships but most times, they are all overcrowded and more importantly over-priced. Your take?

  16. Oia is a relatively small town. Assuming you have no major mobility issue, you will easily be able to explore the entire town and its cute streets. One problem with Oia is that as you walk through the streets, you will find yourself stopping every few seconds to take another picture (thank goodness for digital photography) and every picture will look good :). When you first arrive at Oia (assuming you do this on the land side) you will have a short walk into the streets before you get towards the water side where every view is simply stunning. If you arrive by boat (from Fira) you will have lots of photo ops from the boat...and then as you head up the road into the town.

    Hank

    Hank,

Do you have any idea of what a boat from Fira to Oia would run for two people. I have read a great deal about the various tours but wondering if you were to spend your day in Santorini, where would you focus your time. Port stay unfortunately is only about 6 hrs.

  17. I totally recommend Gold Street Travel!

We had an amazing tour of the North Part of Santorini visiting Oia Imerovigli and Firostefani. Then we made a stop to Santo Winery and ended up in Fira where we had free time to walk and shop.

The driver was speaking english fluently, very professional and careful while driving.

We were really satisfied, will definitely use this company again!

How did you reach out to them to get the prices and tours.. did it have a minimum of travelers... there is only 2 of them.. will I have to drum up other passengers... How long was your tour and about what were you looking at in price ( $$$ or Euros)

  18. Regarding price. I've booked a 5 hour tour, 200 euro, with someone I found on trip advisor. Do you feel this is a fair price? Tour includes; Port,Vistonas,Makrades,Lakones, Paleokastritsa,Gastouri,Achillion, Kanoni, Corfu town (5 hours) .

Did this have a number of passenger minimum... Was it a flat rate - drive out of 200 euros. Do you know how long you stay at each place or did it have an itenerary for each place you list above.. Rate does not sound bad, there is only 2 of us... just curious what it entails...

  19. We spent an awesome day in Corfu while on a cruise in 2014 - you can read all about it here.

read your review of day in Corfu... approximately how much was that excursion. I would probably have to find people to share since I am going there with my wife only. Do you remember approx. costs?

  20. Hi Dave

We have 3 groups of 8 people touring with Revelation in May/2014. I received the below email yesterday from Michel saying that they have a new email address. I hope this helps!

    Hello,

Some people didn't get our message mentionning the modification of our email adress.

Please note that for 3 months now our new email adress is :

    revelationtour@aol.com (No S at tour)

    Best regards,

    Michel

Please note our new email adress : revelationtour@aol.com

    http://www.revelationtours.com

    Tel : 33.622.076.777

Villa Victoria, 1 avenue Cap de croix 06100 Nice FRANCE

    Dolfans from Miami

Thanks so much for this info... I was really getting upset that they had not responded...I will reach out to the new email address... - thanks again - Dave in Houston....

  21. Sherri,

I've dropped inquiries to the groups you used in Barcelona and Cannes however as we'd not scheduled anything there. Thanks so much!

    Kristen

Kristen, did you ever hear back from Revelation tours in Cannes.. I have sent multiple emails and enter the info into thier website but the screen goes blank when you enter submit. Curious if it me or are they no longer there? - Dave in Houston

  22. I totally agree...now if I can just convince Mickey of this! (My own sinus surgery 7 weeks ago - and the resulting pain/side effects - may have done more to convince her than anything that perhaps surgery isn't the answer!)

You can most DEFINITELY modify this tour! Michel will work with you - via email - on YOUR wants & desires. Just let him know what you want to see, do, not see, not do...for instance, we decided to skip Monte Carlo - no problem.

Yes, the $600 was a flat fee...so, if you're open to meeting new people, see if you can get another couple or two to join you - you won't regret it, and you might make lifelong friends! It made it easier for us to split the cost...I utilized our Roll Call here on Cruise Critic extensively pre-cruise to round up other folks for my tour. Even if they didn't become my best friends, I figured I could tolerate their company for 6-7 hours for the price of a cheaper tour! ;)

Sherri - I have been trying to reach revelation tours who did your Cannes trip to Nice, Else..I tried the link you provided... Is there another way to reach them... Have not heard back from them by email and I am trying to book this tour with another family... Do you have another way to reach them? - thanks Dave in Houston
