Earlier this year there was a "test" of a $10 charge for additional entrees at dinner.  It lasted a month, on 4 specific ships.  The test is over.  No word on how the test went.

I love Shmoos... thank you all for your input

  2.

Does anyone know if HAL is still charging for things like, an additional menu item at dinner or other charges that were being instituted late last year... or have they scrapped the idea?  Thank you... we are sailing on the Koningsdam on May 20th... Thank you

I don't think it's the $10 that people are objecting to, it seems (to me) to be more about the whole attempt of changing the "feeling" of the MDR.   This is one more change that diminishes any sense of luxury, real or imagined, that is left onboard.

For us, it is definitely not the $10, and disliking this idea isn't sweating the small stuff.  IMHO I would much prefer that they add an  upcharge starter/appetizer/main/dessert every night and lose the idea of charging for that extra pork chop or shrimp.

    well said!

  4. Going for the first time in 2 weeks. Still no excursions booked for this cruise but I've heard bits and peices about mahogany bay. Would love to hear more.

Sent from my SM-G900V using Forums mobile app

The port at Mahogany Bay was developed buy Carnival Corp. Little shopping area with cafe and snacks. Lovely walk to beach. No charge for chairs and there are lots of trees for shade. It's an inexpensive to free port day.

  5. Nice to hear that ties are no longer required.

We were on the Veendam June 2015 and my DH wore a woven button down shirt and a jacket without a tie. The Maitre D, puled out a clip on tie and told him that ties were required in the dining room on Formal nights.

For our Med cruise coming up in October..no jacket..no tie.

  6. It truly depends. If you have jeans or thick sweatshirts (think cool weather cruising) then not very much! On the other hand, warm weather cruising with thin shirts and lots of shorts or thin dress slacks, you can fit quite a bit.

That said, we get the unlimited package and send laundry out every day (sometimes twice a day).

I did call ships services today and was quoted $144 for our 16 night Koningsdam cruise. That comes out to $9/day the same price as buying onboard. Therefore I will wait until onboard and use some of the OBC towards this.

Does the unlimited laundry include pressing cotton slacks?

  7. We will be sailing on the Konigsdam in October. Does HAL enforce the corkage fee wine policy for wine brought on board in Ports? This is our first Med cruise on Holland America. In the past we have sailed Princess and we just walked on with our wine...no one even mentioned it.

  8. I have full upper and lower dentures and am sailing on the Regal Princess in March... I was wondering what would happen if one of the pieces broke, could the medical staff help repair or would it require a port stop and dental lab visit... even a temporary fix would be a help...has anyone experienced such an event..

    Thank you,

    Mark

  9. for all of the useful information... I appreciate it..

About 10 years ago I had some need of the medical facility and the charges were covered by my health insurance plan as an emergency room visit...

We also always purchase evacuation protection... one of the carriers that we use covers pre existing conditions,,,

Thanks again... it's always nice to chat with CC friends...

  10. We recently had a very nice week on the Regal Princess... I had some pain the day before the trip which I thought might be a kidney stone...

If I had a kidney stone attack at sea how much help and relief might have been available from the medical staff..can they administer serious pain relief? Can they administer a catheter if necessary...?

In general how effective is the available care?

    Thanks

  11. There is a wonderful site that has obstructed cabin views for all the Princess ships:

    https://sites.google.com/site/cabinviewbyrenmar/

Click on Royal and REgal to get to the pages for those ships. Some cabins are not pictured waiting for folks like us to submit photos. We'll be in E432 on the Regal in December and I will submit a photo as that one is missing.

    Hope this helps.

  12. We have used both Romecabs and Stefanorometours several times and they have been absolutely reliable both from Rome to the airport and from Civitavecchia to Rome Their tour drivers are very good. The websites are easy to navigate and any query gets a quick response. We plan on using them again in 2015 for a tour from Livorno.

  13. We think the White Pass Railway is not to be missed. It's a spectacular ride made more awesome by knowing how difficult it was to build, how long ago and how fast it was built.

We went all the way to Lake Bennet (bus up, bus and train back) to see where the gold rush

people had to wait out the winter. Definitely worth the ride.

  14. We've booked a deluxe balcony cabin mid forward obstructed view cabin (E333) for our December cruise. Does anyone have photos from the balcony so we can see just how high the lifeboats are? (Any cabin obstructed by regular lifeboats not tenders)

Please post here or email us lipp4 at comcast dot net.

    Thanks so much

    Barbara

  15. While the 2 they show on TV are rather sedate, and the one with the couple ordering wine resembles an add for another product altogether :D, this is the one that I like the most, and it's not seen on TV. It really does pretty much sum up my love affair with Princess.

Thanks for the you tube link...That ad is terrific! It's why we don't like playground ships. We like knowing that we are travelling on a vessel at sea and while there is entertainment on the ship, the ship is not the entertainment or the destination. It's a wonderful way to travel.

    We love traveling with Princess.

  16. We sailed on the Star jan. 2012. The ship had a quartet playing in the atrium every night --the Bujo quartet complete with Bandolian- that was great..lots of Piazzola and other tango music. There was also a couple who were professional tango dancers. I thought they were just OK.

We booked the ships Tango Show tour in order to see a typical tango show. It exceeded our expectation. It was long and complete - the same show that they put on in the evening- and, to top it off, the lunch served was very good. My husband said his steak was one of the best he had ever had. Lots of wine and good food and a first rate performance.

The downside is that other than a quick drive around and a short stop in La ricoletta cemetary and the La Boca area we did not see much of Buenos Aires. Can't have everything in a one day stop.

If I had it to do again I would make the same choice..The tour with the Tango show.
