Cruise Ships Canceling Calls to San Juan

According to El Nuevo Dia, Royal Caribbean is canceling 90 calls to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the 2020 and 2021 season. The news was released by Fermin Fontanez, the director of the Authority for Public-Private Partnerships that these cancellations would happen.

However, the cruise line has apparently confirmed to the site that no itineraries have been changed and they are “still standing on the same full itineraries.”

The reason for the cancellations is the privatization of the cruise docks in San Juan due to much-needed maintenance that is needed. Around $250 million investment is needed to make sure cruise ships can continue to dock there in the years to come. There is an urge for governer Wanda Vazquez to not go ahead with the privatization so this news is fluid.

We will have to see how this works out as the port authorities and Royal Caribbean usually have an open dialogue and it has come as a surprise with the cancellations.

The 90 canceled visits to the eastern Caribbean island would mean 360,000 fewer tourists and in turn, would have an economic impact of $44 million. Authorities have also stated that an additional 30 departures from San Juan are being canceled and that apparently includes Freedom of the Seas which is operated by Royal Caribbean.

Allure of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas which are both Oasis-class cruise ships are also impacted by the canceled calls. Carnival Cruise Line has remained committed to the island and has even recently announced new sailings with the Carnival Fascinationcruise ship in 2021.

Talked to my sister today who is in PR and is very connected to the government, This  is a matter of politics and who is going to buy and administer the ports. This includes Old San Juan as well as Ponce. They feel the cruise ship should not be there. They want new rules, money etc..Not only RCL had been affected but other cruise lines are looking into it as well. As everyone knows it is sad to say that things in Puerto Rico are shaky all over. There s not really a government and decisions and finance are are mainly made by an Assembly in Washington DC.  This is going to cause a lot of lay offs and a lot of loss of business. But of course they do not realize this.  All this came out this morning in an announcement made by the tourist dept. So I am sure that things have not been worked out yet in the cruise lines. Too early to really tell.

In Aruba we toured the island and saw all the main attractions including the aloe factory and the baby bridge. We also did a semi-submarine trip that was fun. In Bonaire we kayaked the mangroves which was very relaxing and peaceful. And in Curacao we saw the floating market, the movable bridge and we toured some caves.  These are nice islands.  Bonaire is so sleepy and adorable.

Wow! thanks great info. I was kind out reading some of these. I did not know about the floating market. What is it.  Do you remember what excursion they were. They have so many  island excursions in Aruba that is hard to chose. How about the caves?

US medical insurance MAY cover you out of the country.  Mine does.

But you are right, MediCare does NOT cover you outside the US.

One big advantage to 3rd party insurance is the higher coverage for medical and med evac.  Or you can buy just a medical evacuation polity, such as MedJet Assist.   Also, MedJet takes you to the hospital of YOUR choice, anywhere in the world, not just to the nearest suitable one.

The BIG advantage to the cruise line policy is, it is not underwritten for age, so for older people, it can be MUCH less.

But personally, I do not cover the cruise cost.  By the time the cruise comes, I have paid for it, and if I don't go, it will not be a financial hit.  Just a big disappointment.   But medical or medevac expenses can be huge and unplanned.

My last cruise, the difference between covering the cruise fare or not was over $500.  So 10 - 11 cruises, I am even, and after that, even if I miss one, I am ahead in the long run.

I know what you mean but I also worked in insurance for many years. There is a clause you can purchase to cover you outside. But per federal regulations it has a limitations. My nephew did not cover but the embassy help with repatriation and transfer to the US. It was a mess. The hospital would not give adequate medical care until we paid them daily. It was the month from hell and our family was totally hurt financially. We had a go fund and it helped.  I went on Tv to ask for help and so did my sister in Newark and in PR. My Florida congressman reached out to me and with his help they contacted the embassy and the State Department to get a US citizen safely out. It was all over the news. When he finally arrived  in Newark after a week in the hospital he was out of and induce coma etc. He is doing much better. Now I know what to do when I travel. I always knew about it but never thought it could happened to my family. I always take the cruise insurance.  Is on record with the cruise ship and they are very helpful.

  5. Us Medical Insurance or Medicare do not cover out of the country. We always get the cruise insurance. It does pay for transporting out of the ship to the closest near port. However  with recent experience with my nephew you should have an insurance that cover repatriation, which means that if you have to go to a hospital out of the country it would cover the cost of air transport to the US sometimes costly and about 70,000.00plus.  United Health Care Global is an excellent choice. Just please ask the question of repatriation. The transport company does the clearance from the Embassy and State Dept for you. Our family just learned this lesson the bad way recently.

  6. We are leaving on the Majesty, May 9th.

    No RCI excursions booked.

Have dinner arranged first night ashore, then onto some bars. Maybe a club.

Next day a tour booked vi Blexie from 10 am-4pm (May be a little earlier, ship sails at 4) 130Cu for a group of 4.

2 Brits and 2 US citizens.

We live in Tampa and thinking of doing this cruise. Can you please tell me the restaurant you are going to and how did you find out about it. Also which excursion are you taking? do they have a website

  7. We've been cruising for 20 years and all but 3 times have been with RCCL. To say the least, we've been very loyal and introduced many of our friends to RCCL. We sailed on January 27th on Harmony of the Seas and due to health issues, this was our first cruise in 3 years. The ship was beautiful and clean, the crew was friendly and helpful but the whole dining experience was very disappointing. Over the years we've noticed changes, of course, but what a difference 3 years has made! Back in the "good old days" the dining was elegant, food was delicious and presentation impeccable. Gone are the days when we would have a drink on our table when we arrived and the bar waiter would pass our table frequently. At the end of the meal, we would have the opportunity to have the after-dinner-drink of the day and who could pass these up in the pretty little glasses? The food served was so delicious there was no need to pay extra for eating in a special place on board. In fact, as I recall, there were no separate restaurants. On formal nights there was either a pianist or string quartet, and other nights as well. Our last night on the Harmony, I swear my selection was a frozen dinner! And don't even get me started of the lack of dress code. Are we the only ones objecting to this and should we just move on to another cruise line for older and stuffier cruisers?

Dont feel bad. You are not alone. Just got off the FReedom and experience the same thing. They have a new policy now at the dining room that you order all at once and have to leave right away. You are not able to stay and chat like before because they allow less time to serve. Also the shows are mostly at the same time as you are having dinner. You have to just rush and get out. Diamond Plus member have no benefits and treated very poorly. Now is just Pinnacles that count. Also bar prices and everything had just gone up two weeks before according to them. Me, Now I feel I have choices and get treated better somewhere else. RCL had been trying to cut too much at the same time and they were a lot of complains on board. Very sad. They do not realize that once you try and like some other cruise line, they loose you. Or.....maybe they just do not care.

  8. Just got off RCL Diamond Plus desk and the rep Frank told me that the only way I could get off the ship is if we book the rcl excursion. But I have read everywhere that they have done walking and excursions on their own, recently.  Can someone help me on this. RCL excursions is a good option but they are also very pricey.

    Two reps said this.

  9. just got off the Freedom and surprise that most of the perks went away. You et specialty coffe only at the specialties restaurants. No priority boarding or debarkation. In othe words you really get othing except washing clothe and folding and one free picture. How is cup of coffe doing any damage to RCL revenue? Johnny Rockets all you get is buy one milkshake and get on free lol. Not much to keep me with RCL. Sad! :')

  10. try the Sheraton downtown Old San Juan. There is also another near the other pier. Best to google it, Hotels at san juan port. The area of condado will also work. However, I would suggest you call and see if they are operating. Some hotels are opened but no air condition due to generator and only the first few floor are available. Is consider just a long distance call not an international call. Also the Hampton Inn in Isla verde but not sure if they are opened. El Convento in old san juan as well.

  11. Evidently the power is still out for half of the island, but it's inland where we cruisers are less like to see it.

San Juan has remained on the itinerary for my upcoming cruise, though I expect we will stick pretty close to the port. I'd like to be able to contribute to the local economy while I'm there, as the big companies don't need my money -- locals do. Can anyone recommend restaurants or businesses near the port that are locally owned? Thanks.

San Juan is opened, however a lot of the island is still wothout power. In San Juan there are business opened and operation under a generator. Still there is a lot of culture to see if you walk around.

  12. I am sorry for the multiple threads on this topic. We are Freedom Jan 6th sailing and trying to decide what to do in San Juan. My adult kids are excited about the ATC excursion. I think me and hubby are going to pass on the ATV and probably do the touring on our own.

I had originally reserved San Juan Carabali ATV Adventure few months ago and normal price was 144 with sale price of 115 per person. On 11/17/17 I received email that this excursion was cancelled for all of us. I was very disappointed. I went ahead and reserved us all on Campo Rico ATV Adventure for 120 per person.

Today when I was looking at the available shore excursions I can see that Carabali ATV Adventure is available again but now it is not on sale. It is 144.00.

I thought Carabali looked nicer because it was near rain forest. Both have good reviews on Trip Advisor.

I posted this on the San Juan site and have gotten no responses.

Has anyone done either of these excursions? Would you recommend one over the other and why?

    Thanks for your responses.

Even thought they offer the excursion I do not recomend it. Puerto Rico is in bad shape still. Not a safe place to wonder around and there are a lot of barriers still along the way. Just got back from helping and my sister who works for FEMA was also there working. It is up to you. My experience, it is like a war zone. Those people need lots of help.

  13. Hi,

We originally booked a gs on explorer...we saw rfs was available so reserved it at a certain price, my dad then decided to join us so we rang ta and got him on booking. We sail feb 12 and my dad has really declined mentally and physically and we think its best he doesnt sail. I rang ta this morning and they sid that the cabin may be repriced, can they do thi as we originally reserved it just for the two of us at a certain price? Ta said they may not get to it today as they are busy

My friend and I have done this and it reverts and reprice to the poriginal price. I never book with a TA because of that. Argue the point.
