  1. I will be in Old Quebec City on September 16-17, 2019.  I have been reading as many reviews as I can find and I'm thinking that I'd like to hire a private tour driver to take at least 4-6 people to Montmorency Falls, St. Anne de Beaupre, the Copper Factory, etc.  I am finding that most organized tours don't allow enough time at the falls and some of them are cutting it close for cruise ship passengers.  YIKES!  So, do any of you have experience with or recommendations for private drivers in this area?

    Driftwoodgal,

If you want to see whales off of the coast of Massachusetts the best time is mid spring through early fall. The Gulf of Maine population feeds off of the coast of Massachusetts (Stellwagen Bank, Jeffery's Ledge) up to the Bay of Fundy. The vast majority of my experience is in the Stellwagen Bank/Jeffery's Ledge area. I cannot stress enough how important it is to use responsible and respectful whale watch companies. Are you planning a cruise to New England/Canada?

We will be docked in St. John's NB from 10-6 on Sunday, Sept. 22.   Which company do you suggest as preferable and within this time frame, is this doable and/or advisable?   Do these companies provide transport from pier or would we need to rent a car?  Thanks!

I tend to do independent excursions.  Here's what I have planned for the cruise I'm taking with my mom at the end of Sept.

Portland - Cruise of Casco Bay followed by a ride on the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad, then lunch and a tour of Portland on an old fashioned firetruck

Bar Harbor - Oli's Trolley 2 hour tour of Acadia National Park followed by some shopping and relaxing

Saint John, NB - tour of the town on a City Transit Bus followed by shopping or maybe a "150 years of Beer" tour

Halifax - we're going to rent a car and drive up and tour a couple wineries. We'll have lunch at one of them before heading to the Grand Pre Historical Site (it's where the Acadians were chased out of Canada- we thought it would be neat since we lived in the New Orleans area where they ended up), then to tour the Fairview Lawn and Mt. Olivet Cemeteries to see the Titanic graves, then we'll return the car and head over to Nova Scotian Crystal to maybe buy some souvenirs to take home.

For me, I try to only plan for maybe 1/2 day excursions so I know I'll be back on the ship with plenty of time to spare.  For all the ones above, by far the day that will be the longest will be Halifax, but even then, we are in port for 12 hours and we might only be gone for 6 - 8.

We will be in Portland on Monday, Sept. 23rd.  I'm interested in your Cruise of Casco Bay plus other things.  Did you find a local provider for that?  Or is it ship sponsored.  We've been there before and this sounds great.

  4. You definitely should go to the North End and at least walk thru and around the Old North Church.  I would also go to one of the big bakeries there for a canoli.  There is Mike's, Bova and Modern (I think).  Tremendous amount of restaurants there.  Personally, I thought Quincy Mkt and Faneuil Hall was a bit overrated.   Those things are in easy walking distance of each other.  Perhaps a harbor tour might be interesting.  Also, look at the Hop On/Off Trolleys.  Great way to get around.  Not sure of the hours that they run.  Good luck.

  5. Sounds like I've found the motherload of information here (which I needed!). We are also on the Majesty on July 14 and will be driving down from central Alabama. Have not cruised from Tampa in many years so I'm sure everything has changed. We will be driving down I-75, so give me my best route, please! Also, I've posted this ? elsewhere, but any hints on a good place to stay and park pre-cruise?

    Thanks for your help!

  6. This is really helpful information! Thanks to all of you who are giving such good hints. We will also be on the Majesty on July 14 and are wondering how to find the terminal at which we will dock. It's been years since we sailed from Tampa and are rusty! Any hints on where to stay????

  7. I stayed at the HIE Rocky Point. Also a Hampton Inn right there. They have shuttle service to the port and also allow free parking. Bahama Breeze there on the grounds for a cool pre cruise atmosphere and meal.

We are cruising out of Tampa for the first time in eons. I remember very little about the port of Tampa. Is the Rocky Point area very far from the port and is it a pretty safe area?

Does anyone know what the daily charges for parking at the port are? I'll google if no answer. LOL.

    Thanks! Much appreciated.

  8. Is it possible to reserve loungers at the Krazy Lobster before arrival? I understand that Steve at Tropicante will hold seats for arrival. I have also heard that the food and beverages at KL are a bit less expensive. For those of you in the know, please comment. Will be there on the Symphony on Nov. 20, 2018.

  9. Thanks for your diligent research. I suspected such with Coz being an island based on tourism. Cancun has always had a seedy side. However, I'm sure Coz does too just like any other city anywhere. Eyes open and you should be just fine.

  10. I hope that last part is true. For us it's always been business as usual in Cozumel. Maybe because it's an island we feel safe there but we do understand bad things happen

I agree with that assessment. I suppose as with travel anywhere, just be vigilant and don't do stupid things like wear flashy jewelry and flash your cash.

  11. As nascarcruiser mentioned, the advisory now includes the cruise ports of the Yucatan. This is from the OLD advisory:

    [source:

    From 8/22/17 Advisory:

Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, and Tulum): U.S. citizens should be aware that according to Government of Mexico statistics, the state of Quintana Roo experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred.

Has anyone who has been there recently felt unsafe? We have been at least 20 times and never had any reason to feel unsafe. Going again in Oct. Just wondering????
