Hello I’m cruising June 2024 arriving into Seward Monday. Planning on taking a Kenai Fjord boat tour then hopping on the train to Anchorage and staying the night in Anchorage. First question….where to stay in Anchorage that doesn’t cost a fortune? We will be renting a car so I’m willing to drive north toward Denali to stay the night. I really don’t want to drive too far out of town because we will be getting in around 10pm from Seward on the train.

You can expect the train to arrive in Anchorage at about 10:15 p.m. Sunset in June will be no earlier than 11:21 p.m., but if you're planning to pick-up a rental vehicle at 10:30 p.m. (are any vehicle rental agencies open at that hour?), it seems unlikely that you would be able to get very far before losing daylight. I might be tempted to stay at Wingate by Wyndham Anchorage Downtown/Ship Creek (price range: $360) because it is a quick and easy walk from the train station at a late hour. The still-close Ramada by Wyndham Anchorage Downtown might be a better value (price range: $197). If you were able to get out of Anchorage on the night of arrival, then perhaps you might stay in Wasilla (price range: $135-203), which would also give you a head start on driving the next day.

I was planning on heading up to Denali on Tuesday morning and take the bus into the National Park 1pm Tuesday.  We will be staying the night in the Denali area Tuesday night then back to Anchorage for flight out Wednesday evening.  Second question…. Is that a feasible plan? Will I be trying to fit too much in less than two days?

It is possible that you could drive to Denali in four hours, and for that reason your plan could be completed as intended. Are the hours of the rental vehicle agency such that you could retrieve a vehicle between your train arrival time and the time by which you would have to depart Anchorage for Denali? Do you know where the rental vehicle agency is located, and the logistics of getting there? There seems to be a number of small details that have to have to confirmed to fully ascertain if your plan is practicable. If all the pieces do fit together, that it might still be pushing things a bit, but you're the best judge as to how much you would like to pack into a day.

I planned on renting from Turo which I understand you just have to Uber to the location of the car and pick it up at anytime you have arranged prior.

Is that a feasible plan?  Will I be trying to fit too much in less than two days?  Should I not try to go all the way to Denali with that short of a time frame?  Would my time better spent going elsewhere out of Anchorage for the short two days?  I have been to Alaska twice before and traveled into Denali park but my husband has never been.  Also, I am aware that the bus only travels approximately 43 miles into the park due to a landslide blocking the road.

I was also debating just going as far north as Talkeetna.  We could take a flight seeing tour of Denali from there and stay Tuesday night.  Then we could take our time driving back to Anchorage Wednesday.  I feel like I might be missing out if I’m in Alaska and don’t go to Denali National Park. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Hi I’m new to MSC! I’m looking at 3/23 Meraviglia cruise with stop at Ocean Cay.

Could anyone share a list of available excursions on the island with prices?
Having only sailed on NCL I was wondering if MSC offers an Ultimate arcade package similar to NCL.
    Thank you!

  4. Questing about this....

Getaway/Jan: Our room has dropped $500 and my travel agent called NCL and nothing was offered.  Do I need to contact NCL directly?  Or does my travel agent need to call again and ask for either a room upgrade or OBC?

I'm definitely going to get this for our stateroom - love that it is just one charge to be shared.  However, I don't think I'll have them put it on my card; hoping the pass can be put on my 14 year old son's card...I would assume so?  then he and my 11 year old can fight over it in the arcade while I'm having a mojito somewhere else on the ship!

Haha, Yes you can put it on your sons card.  I just purchased it yesterday and put it in my 14 year old sons name and thinking the same thing that he and his 10 year old sister can fight over it! So funny!

  6. Hi just checking to see if anyone has purchased the arcade package and is it worth it?  I will be on Getaway in January for 9 days and it is $160.  It says that it can be used on any arcade game with green colored swipes.  What type of games have the green colored swipes?  Just curious what type games they have available.  Thanks!

  7. Hi,

Right now we are booked in family balcony and was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to the mini-suite.  I believe that I read the only difference in the two categories was the size of the bathroom.  Is that true?  Is the actual room the same size or are there any other perks of the mini-suite compared to a regular family balcony room?

    Thanks!

  8. I know it is a $14.95 charge but does anyone know if you can go with 2 people and share an entree for $14.95 for both diners.  Or is it always just $14.95 per person even if you share.  I would be willing to go with my husband for lunch and just share nachos or something if is just $14.95 per entree due to the location, looks like a fun part of the ship.

Also if we have the drink package can we just go to the bar and order drinks there without eating?    Thanks!

  9. Question about Margaritaville......

When you get to the day of the cruise the app will change completely. It will have a place at the bottom that says "I'm on board". When you click that it will give you the option of signing up for the $10 messaging. One note on that... I was sharing an account with my husband up until that point. In order to message each other, you will EACH need to have an account. It was easy for him to set it up at that point.  I hope that helps!

Yes that helps a ton!  I wondered if we all would have to get the app and pay $10 separately.  With my husband and 2 kids I need all of us to have the app on our phones to message each another on the ship.

  11. We sail in January and I have been thinking about buying $20-$50 in OBC each week or 2 just so that when we get on the boat we will have it and it wont seem like such a big hit in the pocketbook to pay at the end for on board expenses.  What all can we use it on besides drinks, excursions and specialty dining?  Can you use it in gift shop or casino?  Also can you use it toward the end of the cruise gratuity.  It is nice  to know if we dont use it we can get it back.  That was one reason I have not added any $ on our account yet because I wasnt sure if you get back $ you didnt use after the cruise. Thanks!
