  1. We are booked on a Baltic cruise next year, and as we expected, the excursions are not available yet. We can access details of excursions which are said to be 'Typical for this port' and one of those is called 'St Petersburg Explorer' and allows for quite a lot of free time at three locations in the city. It is listed as a 7.75 hour excursion, but no price guide is mentioned.

Has anyone got this excursion offered for a P&O Baltic cruise this year and, if so could you let me know the price of it? I would also be interested in the price of the 5.25 hour tour that just goes to Peterhof Palace and Fountain Park.

Also can anyone tell me when excursions for Baltic cruises tend to go on sale? P&O website says at least 12 weeks prior to departure, but I am sure the excursions on our last P&O cruise were on sale for way longer than that.

Last time in St. Petersburg we booked a private two day tour with local company Alla Tours. Fantastic tour, small mini bus party. You print off tickets on line and these are your visas. Russian visas are expensive. Pay at the end of the tour in US dollars or credit card at the end of first day (these were the arrangements in 2015). Jumped queues at the major attractions. It's worth a look on line, the company is very helpful. Tours fill up early. Kenjo.

  2. Will be disembarking cruise ship in Miami and being transferred to airport. Will arrive about 9.30. London flight is not until 10pm. Intending to leave luggage at airport and use the orange line metro to go back into Miami. Which is the best station to get off to spend the day?

  3. Has anyone used the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection 144 hour Visa exemption Transit Policy that came into effect in January 2016. Getting information from the Chinese visa office in London is proving difficult.

I am flying to Shanghai, staying in Shanghai for 48 hours then boarding a cruise ship at Shanghai International Cruise Terminal.

  4. I have just booked an Alaska cruise for DH and myself on the Ruby Princess this summer. We would like traditional dining first seating, but are wondering what size table to request. The only other 2 cruises we have been on were years ago with relatives where we had large tables just to ourselves.

This cruise it's just the two of us, however, and we are on "uncharted waters" in the dining room. DH and I would be fine with a table for two, but are also open to dining with others and see it as an opportunity to get to meet some interesting people. We want to be able to relax and enjoy dinner, however, and not feel the need to make conversation if it doesn’t flow naturally.

I know this decision is strictly a personal one and there is no “right answer”, but I would be interested in hearing perspectives of more experienced cruisers about which table arrangements they prefer, and why.

The travel agent I spoke with suggested we might try a 6-top, and that we could ask for a change to a table for 2 after the first night, if it didn’t work out. Would this be difficult to arrange a switch, if, for example, we found ourselves seated with "The Bickersons"?

If two persons are dining the best table size is six. Table for two is ok if you want to dine alone. A table for four works if the two couples are amicable. A table for eight or above makes it difficult to converse with guests on the opposite side of the table.

  5. Our mattresses in cabin B710 were manageable but had large dents in them.

No chance of rolling out in rough seas! It will be surprising if they last more than a few months. Our pillows also had a strange "fishy" smell. The cabin steward changed the pillow cases and it was a bit better. What do they use in the laundry? Unlike Shogun's steward ours was excellent so we were lucky.

Not the best Princess cruise we have been on. The cut backs are beginning to show.

  6. Hi All

Captain has been on to say we are sailing into a storm sea conditions rough wind 45 he advised to secure lose items in cabins etc, with so many older folks on board any rough conditions will be a challenge for them,

While in IC an older man was leaning with his back to the wall well got things wrong and loud bang and he was flat on the floor well in the time it took other passengers to work out what had happened a number of waiters had rushed to the man’s aid, he was unhurt was given a chair and comforted for some time but very impressed with speed of waiters,

Tried crown grill with folks who have never been before they thought service setting etc was fine we had a window seat, however they thought sea food lacked taste meat was OK but would have been better flame cooked thought desserts too sweet overall meal was fine but had had better in main dining room,

As to salty dog still only seen one table each night in use, spoke to some crew who are coming to end of contract they plan an evening in crown grill as they miss sabatinis

Still ongoing battle with the new beds got up the other day and back went, we have not booked or taken out any future cruise credits can not put into words how much l dislike this bed, now have seen folk carrying on there own pillows before if you see a guy carrying a mattress it will be me for just now no plans to risk my health with these beds again.

Overall this has been a fine cruise amazing weather passenger mix older than normal shows standing room only etc, on board feeling a little different due to high number of baits on board, again not being from our age group means you do not mix as much as we would on other cruises.

Ship running plenty of drills bridge keeps you up to date of what’s going on, we are on deck 8 had a man outside our window today which was a bit of a surprise.

Our beds were manageable but had large dents in them - no chance of rolling out if the sea was rough! These mattresses are supposed to be new but it will be surprising if they last more than a few months

  7. We are taking a Princess cruise to the Baltic in July. Can anyone recommend a good small-group tour company for St. Petersburg. We are worried about the visa issue and want to make sure we get a company that takes care of that. Help?

No problem, use Alla Tours they are great. Once booked, you print off tickets.

These are also your visas for the excursion. Two day tour is best. No deposit is required. We paid in US dollars at the end of the tour. Fantastic itinerary.

They also organise tours for other ports in the Baltic. Just google Alla Tours for full details.

  8. HI all -

I'm trying to plan out our Skagway portion of our Alaska cruise. I'm confused looking at the umpteen reviews, excursions, and websites. Is White Pass Rail and Yukon Rail the same thing or 2 different rails? Help! TIA

It's the White Pass and Yukon Railway only one line. Starts from beside the ship on the dock. Expensive but We think it was worth the money

    Fascinating history. Ken and Joan.
