  1. Toss between the Mail train and seeing penguins.

    Who has done either?

Hi Karen. If you want to do the mail run which is fantastic you need to prebook as he books out most times.

Whatever you decide to do getting your money back if the ship doesn't come in should not be a problem.

Pohatu Penguins have different things going on at different times of the year and different experiences available so best to check with them. The journey over there is an adventure in itself.

There are plenty of independent operators at the wharf offering a variety of modes of transport and styles of tours. You can find them on the akaroa.com cruise page. Have fun. :)

  2. Hi I have heard that someone is going to have rental cars available from Akaroa this season. Keep an eye on akaroa.com for info. There are also several tour operators with various sizes of buses & vehicles. The roads are narrow, steep & winding so tours are a good option & cost effective if a little less flexible depending on whether or not you get someone who is happy to do a personalised option.

I can assure you Akaroa is not a temporary stop despite being a tender port. It is likely to be the main Canterbury cruise port for many years. It has received glowing reviews from passengers & the journey over the hill to Christchurch is spectacular for those who don't wish to stay in the Akaroa & Banks Peninsula region.

    Have fun.
