  1. anyone experienced bus #1 to see the reversing tides at Fallsview Park?

You can take bus #1 or #7 from uptown over to Douglas Avenue. On the way back you would want #2 or #8.

You'll want to get off at the intersection of Fallsview Avenue and Douglas Avenue to walk down to Fallsview Park.

You could also walk west over the Reversing Falls Bridge. There's a restaurant that's currently under renovation on the west side of the bridge, on the other side of the road from where you would be coming from.* There's a lookout deck and one of those glass bottom walkways there. Depending on when your trip is, it might be finished renovations by the time you come. There's a bus stop by the hill near the restaurant too.

*Be VERY careful crossing the road if you do this. There are no good spots for pedestrians to cross and traffic is heavy.

  2. As I've stated before, it doesn't matter whether you unplug a surge protector when you're not in the cabin, or whether you use it at night, or whatever. Your surge protector can be working 100% correctly, and perfectly safe, until a deck light at the other end of the ship goes to ground, which subjects the semi-conductors in your surge protector to experience a reverse voltage, for which they are not designed, and which can cause failure of the semi-conductor into thermal runaway and fire. These fires are not exemplified by long term heating like normal electrical fires are, but the semi-conductor will almost instantaneously burn up and melt the surge protector housing, starting the fire.

While I understand people's desire to protect electronics, and recommend using a surge protector while travelling on land, note that none of the ship's vast array of electronics (POS registers, servers, bridge navigation equipment, safety equipment, engine room automation) is equipped with a surge protector, and I have been on several ships actually struck by lightning, and none of these systems were affected in the slightest. You also don't get the large voltage step down you do on land, from 12,000 volts at the pole to 240v going into the home, on ship's you step down in stages, from 10,000 volts to 480v, from 480v to 220v, and from 220v to 110v, so to get the 10,000 volts to your CPAP machine would require a minimum of 3 transformers to fail simultaneously.

I appreciate your willingness to explain this over and over for people.

  3. No problems here either.

Standard advice is to clear your cookies and cache before trying again.

If that doesn't work, then to try using a different browser, and check to see that you are using the latest version.

Also, sometimes it may just be the particular device you are using that is having the problem, and it may work if you try it on another device.

    That has happened to us.

I tried clearing cookies & cache, and my Chrome is the latest version. The website still doesn't work for me.

  4. As I stated on another thread, I can access some of my reservations and not others in 'My Celebrity'. Sometimes the icons and words are at the top, other times it's just words and links all messed up down the side of the page?

This isn't just reservations - I can't access the entire site (Find a Cruise, Ship Pages, etc) if I attempt to use Chrome rather than IE.

  5. Me thinks you are reading too much into the topic. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Those who like to "dress up" do so because they like it and they are comfortable doing it. Same for those who like to "dress down." It's not rocket science.

That's exactly my point though - some people like one thing' date=' and some people like another, and the current rules allow for both to co-exist. I'm mostly confused by the apparent need for everyone to participate in order for some to feel comfortable.

[Funny aside though - I work in a field that is *almost* rocket science']

  6. Is it just me, or does this sort of emphasis on "everyone must dress in fancy attire" remind anyone else of those nights where you don't feel like drinking but everyone who is drinking insists that you MUST participate or you'll ruin the fun for everyone?

Is it truly better to surround yourself with people who are wearing clothes they don't want to wear that evening? Does that really make them better dinnermates?

Sometimes I like to dress up, and sometimes I don't. If I were to be forced into a dress on a night I wasn't in the mood for it, I can guarantee you I wouldn't be making pleasant conversation.

I also find it fascinating that people seem to be uncomfortable with people "dressing down" when they're dressed up, but there isn't a similar issue with people who dress up in a situation that's more casual. What's the underlying motivation for this attitude? It can't just be about wanting everyone to be similar/participate, because then there would be dress code threads about how "those people in their gowns and suits need to stay out of the buffet".

  7. So they're adding cabanas to the Lawn Club.

It's not mentioned but I wonder if the movie screen will be replacing the hot glass show.

They don't necessarily need to do that - they could put the screen on the white wall that backs the aft bar. Just wondering.

On their Facebook thread they responded to that:

Aaron Pacheco Adding the movie screen on the Lawn Club, does that mean that the Hot Glass show is going away?

    Celebrity Cruises Hi Aaron,

The Hot Glass Show will not be removed from its location.

(I'm not Aaron, but I'm glad he asked).

  8. CEFM, as a local can I ask your opinion,

We will be in Saint John on Oct 18,2016 from 7am to 330pm and renting a car.

    I see several possibilities -

1] Fort Howe, Fallsview Park to see the reversing rapids, Carleton Martello Tower,

    2] Irving Nature Park

    3] St Martins Caves

    4] Fundy Trail

goals - Photography and walking (easy, primarily flat walking for 4-5 miles is ideal).

What would you recommend as best usage of our limited time?

What can we reasonably fit into about 6 hours?

You could feasibly combine 1 and 2 into one day.

    Potential Route

I included the Falls Restaurant. It's closed, but it's another vantage point for viewing the reversing, and there's a little tourist info booth there.

For the Saint John tide tables October 18th, low tide is at 7:50AM and high tide is 1:58PM. You could even stop to see the river on your way over to Martello Tower/Irving Nature Park and on your way back.

I haven't been to the Nature Park in years, so no idea if this is current or not, but it shows the trails, their lengths and level of difficulty:

  9. For Saint John, you'd likely want to go out of St. Andrews, which is approximately two hours round trip.

    http://www.tourismnewbrunswick.ca/Do/OutdoorActivities/WhalesAndWildlife.aspx

Click on "See more whales & wildlife experiences" to see all the options. You wouldn't want any of the options from Deer Island, Grand Manan or Campobello Island, as ferries are involved and if it breaks down, chances are you'll be stuck overnight.

  10. I forgot to include where the ships are -

Marco Polo Cruise Terminal - Water Street between Duke Street and Queen Street

Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal - Water Street between St James Street and Lower Cove Loop

Long Wharf - north end of the harbour, due west from the Hilton (does not dock directly next to the Hilton though, you have to walk north to the Harbour Passage Trail (a walking trail that is notable for being red in colour) and go around the water. Ships generally only dock at Long Wharf if it is a three ship day, although I have seen it happen before with two ships when the QM2 was in port, since she's so long.

Your ship location is the Berth column on this website:

    http://www.cruisesaintjohn.com/media-centre/key-information/cruise-schedule/

  11. Can you give more specific info on where the shipping is from the ship? I have never been before

There's a tent set up in the port area; there are plenty of individual shops along the streets, mainly concentrated but not limited to the area bounded by Water Street, Duke Street, Germain Street and King Street; and there are shops in Market Square, City Hall, Brunswick Square and the Saint John City Market. These last four are all linked by the pedway system. Market Square is one building at the north end of Water Street bounded by North Market Wharf, Smythe Street, St. Patrick Street. It is connected by pedway over St. Patrick Street to City Hall, which is then connected by pedway over Chipman Hill to Brunswick Square. Brunswick Square is then connected to the Saint John City Market under Germain Street, however this passage may be obstructed due to a project to upgrade the elevator until later this summer (2016). The Saint John City Market is bounded by Germain Street, North and South Market Street, and Charlotte Street.

This is not meant to be comprehensive - I'm sure there are other shopping opportunities uptown that I'm not aware of. For example, Jones Gallery is on Duke Street further east than Germain Street, so it's not included in the bounded area that I mentioned where the majority of shops are. There may be others that I'm missing as well.

  12. Paraveina - on my day high tide is at 09:37 and low tide at 15:50. What would be the best time to see the reversing falls? I had hoped to be able to walk out to the caves but it looks like the tides are not working out for us that day.

    http://www.tourismnewbrunswick.ca/Products/R/Reversing-Rapids.aspx

It depends on what you want to see. It you just want to see some rapids on the north side of the bridge, you could go at low tide. If you want to see the river change the direction it flows in its entirety, you'll want to be there from an hour or two after low tide until an hour or two before high tide.

I've seen a good rule of thumb be to go about 3 hours after low tide if you'd like to see slack tide (that's the only time a boat might pass through, although I don't think that's a common occurrence). Or go about 4 hours after low tide and stay until around high tide if you want to just view the "reversing" portion where the river flows upriver and rapids and whirlpools are generated as a result.

  13.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO maryann ns: My wife and I went on a tour the first time we went to St. John. We took another tour in the morning. The tour that went to the reversing waters also went in the afternoon so we took it. The tour guide himself informed us that the waters don't reverse so well in the afternoon.

Your guide must have meant on that specific day the waters would not reverse so well in the afternoon. As a resident of Saint John, I can assure you that I have seen the falls reversing in the afternoon MANY times. As Mary Ann pointed out, the tides aren't on a perfect 12 hour schedule. For example, low tide today will be at 03:04 and 15:32. Tomorrow, low tide will be at 04:01 and 16:27.

  14. Keep in mind, the Canadian dollar is currently 78 cents US. We've been in Canada during those times when the loony was low and kept telling ourselves that, however much we spent for things like meals, we were getting about 22 percent off.

Although then if you're used to a low sales tax, our high sales tax makes that savings a wash :D

  15. I've been thinking about how most flights from Canada to Auckland have an arrival time in the early morning. I imagine even if we sleep on the plane, we won't be up for a full day of sightseeing, but I don't want to lose the day entirely. I know if I can force us to stay awake at last until evening, we'll be much less jetlagged than if we sleep and speed the rest of the trip trying to fight our circadian rhythms.

With that in mind, I've been trying to decide between doing a wine tour or going on the hop on hop off bus on the first day. I think I'd prefer to do the wine tour, but the combination of jetlag and alcohol makes me leery. I've also never actually done a wine tour before, so I have no idea what to expect. I've previously taken a redeye before from Montreal to London and went the HOHO route, but we only rode for the day and didn't actually get off the bus because we were tired.

Have people done a wine tour after an international flight? Was it too exhausting? Any other recommendations?

  16. If I'm not mistaken, the fire hazard from the extension cords does not come from the cord itself, but the aggregate effect of many people drawing more electricity at once than was planned for by the ship. So, although a person may look at their extension cord and see it's perfectly safe for use, if the ship were to allow many extension cords, it would be a hazard. Even if it didn't cause a fire, you'd see short electrical outages each time the circuit gets overloaded.

  17. Hi, I just booked a Carnival Cruise to Canada for October 2016. I checked the itinerary and we'll be in Saint John, NB on Monday, October 10 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM--which is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Will anything be open in the area on that day? Stores, restaurants, tour companies? I was looking to take a tour to St. Martins and see the Sea Caves, but I don't know if there'll be any local tour companies available.

Smaller stores in the Uptown area that are frequented by cruise ship passengers will have a higher chance of being open. Market Square, City Hall and Brunswick Square will be open at least in so far as they are part of the interior link (ie the buildings are linked with pedways so we can stay out of the snow in the winter). The stores may or may not be open.

A few weeks before local businesses will have their hours posted and if you can tell me then what specific ones you're looking for I can keep my eye peeled for their hours.

Edited to add I have no idea about tour operators.

  18. I'm thinking of booking a short 4 day cruise with one stop here in mid-October- I have been once before and rented a car and went to the Bay of Fundy. My husband has not visited. We would be in Port 8-6 and I was looking at a lobster bake/kayak trip offered through the cruise line. It says it is 4.5 hrs and $145 which seems pricey to me. I have looked on here and TA but don't see a similar private tour. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

I googled for it and found this: http://www.gofundyevents.com/1359.html

I've never kayaked before so I have no idea if they're recommended.

  19. Have there been any announcements or rumors on what changes will happen during the dry dock? One thing I'm curious about will be whether they keep the lawn. I remember either reading here or watching on Mighty Ships that it had much more upkeep than they were anticipating, and I wonder if they'll get rid of it or reduce the area.
