  1. Well according to the article he was climbing up on the railing in the video. Was he impaired? I would never climb up on any of the railings.

    Yes.

I certainly agree that this incident is a horrible tragedy, but it does matter how it happened.

If it 'was' due to possible drunk or reckless behavior then we all can learn from this and hopefully no one else will do something similar and put their life at risk.

Absolutely. I drove my son a bit nuts before his cruise, talking about how all the things that can happen if one allows them self to lose control, due to alcohol, drugs, or whatever. I just hate it that this happened, but I know it has hit a lot of kids in the gut and that they will at the very least take away an "enhanced awareness" from this.

  2. According to one person aboard, the video revealed tat he was on his balcony vomiting into the sea. The seas were very rough, and he fell over. Tried to hold on but.........I definitely think he had way to much to drink and it made him sick.

No, he actually climbed over the railing. That has been reported several times now. And I have learned more about it as my son is also at VT and knew him - my son was on a different cruise ship with another group of VT students - but all the kids learned about what happened pretty quickly. (I just spoke to my son about it this morning after he got off the ship.) I just feel terrible for this boy's family. Such a shame.

  3. hsmom - 1200 cals a day is about my max as well even with exercising a min of 45-60 a day. But I'm a 52 year old peri-menopausal woman and herein lies the problem!

You and I are the same age, but I am done with all that. Honestly, it was barely noticeable - which surprised me as I had heard so many awful things. My doc said it was because I was in such good physical condition (thanks doc!), but I think I'm just lucky! :o

  4. So these guys are selling people an expensive drug that actually has no effect on your appetite or weight loss and telling you it really works if you eat 500 calories a day. WELL DUH! I could eat 500 calories a day and exercise and lose the same amount of weight.......

I am actually outraged these clinics get away with this, its frustrating because it does work...but its not the HCG its the near starvation diet.

    ...

Do yourself a favor and save a few bucks..if you have to stick to that diet to lose weight go for it, but dont waste the money on the HCG, your body does not need it.

    I agree 100%.

  5. Im sorry to hear that as active as you are that you still gain fat eating over 1200 calories. Your metabolism must be abysmally slow and you might want to ask your dr to test your thyroid. That would drive me crazy if I were in your shoes.

Nope - had it tested and it's completely normal. And really, it isn't a problem for me - it's simply "normal", for me.

By the way, the lowest daily point range for WW is 18 points - at least it was when I was following it. And that translates to *about* 900 calories. I had to follow that pretty strictly to lose, once I got below 150. In fact I always had to stay at the bottom of the range, or below.

Really, you do just have to find what works for you, and then stick with it.

  6. There's definitely no one formula for everyone, we all know people who eat everything in sight and stay super-skinny or others who have extreme trouble losing weight even on very restricted diets.

So very true...unfortunately! It would be so much easier if there WAS a one-size-fits-all plan, but there isn't. That said, Odoyal's emphasis on exercise is certainly well-placed. For most people, not enough priority/time is allocated for it. It is initially hard to do, but once you do, and make it a routine, you'll find it won't be so hard to fit in. I wish I was one of those get-up-early-and-hit-the-pavement folks - I'd love to be able to start my day with a run every morning. Alas, I'm a night owl, and need my morning Zzzzz's. :o But I do make good use of my lunch hours at work - I spend them at the gym. I rarely if ever eat out at lunch - always bring it and eat it while working. And that's another thing - I have a sit-down job so I am on my butt 8 or 9 hours a day - huge diff from someone that is on their feet all day.

  7. No body works the same as another. I agree with this statement 100%, however, I dont think Odoyal was trying to force his method of fitness down anyones throat. That being said, 10x your bodyweight in calories is a great place for beginners in fitness to start. No 2 bodies work the same so adjustments will need to be made in everyones diet, regardless of activity.

If you gain fat when eating more than 1200 calories a day, I would be curious to see what it is you are eating. Unless you're 4'2", this sounds unhealthy and very low to me with all the activity you do. Care to post your diet?

I certainly did not intend to imply that he was "forcing" anything. I am a huge advocate of exercise - it's my mantra and I preach it constantly. ;)

My diet is based upon very small meals - I can't eat a large meal at one sitting. A sample? Eggbeaters w/cheese OR a container of FF yogurt with Kashi around 9am. A small can of V9 spicy around and a fiber/protein snack bar around noon. A high fiber/protein wrap with chicken/salsa around 3. A couple slices of 2% cheese or glass of milk when I get home around 7. 1 or 2 hershey kisses or a couple of bites of ice cream! If I am hungry - a small salad, or some oatmeal, or some pita chips with hummus is a favorite. And somewhere in there I usually have a few pretzels, carrrots, an apple, or some other snack. My meals vary greatly as far as content - but always just a little at a time...and I take vitamins of course. Just about always between 1000 and 1200 a day. I have a physical every year, and my doc always shakes her head at my low cholesterol and heart rate - I am as healthy as a horse - I assure you. ;)

  8. Ive always went on the 10 x your body weight rule. Im baffled why people want to eat less. Id rather eat more and work out a little harder.

The less you eat, the less your metabolism works. Eat more = higher metabolism, cardio more = higher metabolism..put them together with maybe a thermo thrown in and your a fat burning machine.

Sounds nice, but truth be told, no body works the same as another.

"Eat more = higher metabolism" While of course this is true, surely you understand that the rate of increase in no way is enough to burn the additional calories you have consumed. It's not even close.

"Id rather eat more and work out a little harder. " Well gee...me too! :D But I do 30 or more minutes of intense cardio every day, and do 2 or 3 full body workouts (at 2 hours each) a week. I ran a 1/2 marathon last weekend. Eating more than 1000 to 1200 cal a day is too much for me - I gain fat. My body has worked this way for as long as I can remember - I simply have an efficient body I suppose.

My point is, please remember that everyone's body does NOT work the same. What works well for you, may not be the answer for others.

  9. 800 cal a day I am fine with. I don't eat much over 1000 cal on a normal day anyway, so 800 isn't much of a stretch. But 500 - I'd never advise that without a doctor (which apparently you have). Still, I never think losing weight this way is a good thing as you are not learning a healthy way to eat every day...you can't take the injections forever, so what happens then? Hopefully this program also has a phase where you learn to maintain your loss.

  10. Yeah I was asking you, I've been to Antigua twice but don't think I ever made it to that location.

I've been there twice too...and both times went to Hell's Gate. :p We did an excursion, one that we just enjoyed so much that we repeated it on the next cruise. Eli (of Eli's Eco Tour) use to take his dad's boat to this little island and play there when he was kid. My son was SO taken with that little tidbit...and with Eli. We climbed all over that thing.

  11. I use Fitday. I looked at SparkPeople, DailyPlate, MyCalorieCounter, and a few others. I chose Fitday because I can add custom foods that are not found in any supermarket...my own sandwiches and recipes. Also there is a pie chart of my daily nutrition, with percentages based on goals that I have set. And there are several reports available also.

They are all good, and I think it's just terrific that there are tools like this available for everyone now. It's about time!

  12. Handbags for me are a challenge. I hate having to buy a new one because I am so picky, and as a result I use one until it looks pretty worn.:o I prefer nice leather - the kind that feels really nice, yet I cannot stand a "floppy" bag. It must be sturdy - not so soft that it loses its shape after a few months. I hate that and will not touch those types of bags. I don't like to "dig" through my purse looking for things. I carry a lot with me, so I need a bag with compartments and pockets so that I can organize the contents. I dislike all the metal junk they are putting all over the bags now - very crass looking to me. I don't care for logos, so the designer bags are not my style. If I had to pick a single brand to choose from, I would have to go with Fossil.

  13. The *biggest* change is that you can opt to have your 9 - 11 year old sign themsleves out of Adventure Ocean. There is a release form you'll need to fill out.

My son was 11 on our cruise, and loved AO. They played a game called "Gaga ball" and you would have thought that the kids were being paid to play they loved it so much. I never allowed him to sign out though - too big a ship for me to fee comfortable with that. This year will be different - he is 13, and will have more freedom.
