A Columbia fleece with a raincoat is exactly what I took.  I am quite cold most of the time and it was perfect because you could take off and put on or zip and unzip as needed.

What time of year did you cruise?

With a windy, cold drizzle much of the time we were there, I definitely needed a warm jacket.  Of course, warm is relative to where you come from.  I live in Houston, and Alaska felt pretty much like a Houston winter day.  Most of the time we were there the temp was around 55 degrees.  I wore a couple of shirt layers, plus a fleece like a North Face or Columbia jacket with a rain jacket over it.  I wore long underwear several times as well.

The things I didn't need...I brought way too many dressy clothes.  I brought quite a few cute sweaters, pants, and boots.  Other than the one dress up night, most people were coming in from excursions and wearing either leggings, jeans, or hiking pants in the dining room.  Lots of times we weren't leaving port till 8 or later and ended up eating places other than the dining room.

Thing I loved having...a cheap over the door pocket organizer to hang on the bathroom door and hold all the bathroom stuff that we didn't have room for on the tiny counter.

Here in NC, I wore my puffy coat only twice and one of those times was while in the mountains. Very likely I would be okay.

  3. Wow! Great tips. Now I’m torn. I’m a native NYer (now living in NC) and I dealt with a wet, windy blizzard in NYC last year with only a fleece and raincoat. The worst part was getting our feet and jeans soaked. However, that wasn’t on a boat and we will be on the glacier tour as well as an ATV buggy ride while in Alaska. Maybe a puffer would be smart. I’ll see if I can fit it. It’s going to be upper 60’s/low 70’s while there but the glacier could be very uncomfortable.

  4. We are sailing 5/28. Originally I planned to take my puffy coat. Now I'm rethinking that. Should a columbia fleece jacket topped by a raincoat be enough? I run hot most of the time and my puffy coat is very warm. I hate to be sweaty! I am so torn about other stuff to pack. Obviously I will be bringing jeans, but probably some long sleeve tees and short sleeve tees that I can top with a sweater. I hate packing!

  5. I messaged Royston twice with no response. I called today and got the wishy-washy response that 'he didn't know if he wanted to do that day'. WTH? Not a no, per se, but certainly not a yes. He came highly recommended by my BFF, but that attitude just rubs me the wrong way. I'm moving on. Sounds like Liz might be a better choice. Any other recommendations?

Well, I guess Royston felt guilty, because I received an email this evening saying that he will take us if we are still interested. We are thrilled. His small group tour includes lunch and our two kids(12 &14) are only $20. Great deal! :)

  6. We are trying to decide between the island tour with these two companies, which both have excellent reviews! (we actually originally wanted Royston, but he states he is not sure he wants to tour that day-weird) Anyway, we are moving on, but not sure which to choose. Anyone have recent opinions on either?

  8. We sail on the Sunshine in about 40 days. I too am leary of the reviews. BUT...as someone said...it is vacation! I'm not working, cleaning, cooking. I'm visiting exotic ports and having plenty of relaxation time. A bad cruise is still better than a bad day at work! (Okay, unless we sink or get norovirus, but still, put me on a lounge chair, and I'll deal with it)

FWIW, I much prefer CCL over RCL. I hated our one RCL cruise and don't ever plan on taking another. We are CCL loyal now! :)
