I've done all three. I found the DSLR lens switching to be cumbersome at times. Now I mostly use a Panasonic Lumix point/shoot with a super zoom and video. You need to consider what you plan to do with your photos. Social media posting - iPhone probably a safe contender...enlarge and print for display in your home...more likely to need higher pixel count so a "real" camera is maybe a better choice. Either way - happy travels!

I have a whale watching photo safari booked for Juneau on the 23rd of June...I'll be one sad soggy camper if that's our most cold/wet day. I was sort of "counting" on Ketchikan for that! ;) Oh, well. It's a vacation either way I suppose.

Wow! What a great review - thanks for sharing your insights and photos with us!!! I sail on June 19th out of Seattle (so a slightly different itinerary) but I'm SO excited I don't know how I'll manage the next 38 days...
