Some other quirks with the NCL beverage package.

    • Carnival limits you to 15 drinks a day less than $20, but those include energy drinks, water, specialty coffees, etc.
    • NCL has a $15 beverage max, but you're limited to beer, wine and alcohol... no bottled water, coffee, etc. Those are only available with the upgraded package.
    • NCL charges you gratuity on the "free" package. No other lines do this... if you get a complimentary beverage package, other lines cover gratuities. For a seven day cruise, you're looking at around $140 out of pocket on NCL for the "free" beverage package.
    • If you're paying out of pocket, NCL's beverage package is by far the most expensive of any major cruise line. Other lines (Royal, Carnival) sell their beverage package for $50ish and up a day (plus gratuity). NCL starts at $99 plus gratuity. Unless you're getting it included as part of a promo, it's a horrible deal.
    • NCL's upgrade to the extra package is even pricier. If you get Celebrity's free/included beverage package, it costs around $10 a day to upgrade. On NCL it's $29 plus gratuity... way more than any other line.
    • NCL is unique in that they let you get two drinks per order. E.g. you can get a beer and a shot simultaneously, where other lines make you order and consume before getting another drink. We actually loved this on NCL.
    • NCL will definitely let you bring on wine, but charges you an automatic corkage fee of $15 for 750 ml and $30 for 1,500 ml when boarding.
    • NCL also offers in-room bottles (what is called bar setup). You'll need to call guest services to set this up before your cruise, and the prices aren't cheap. A few years ago, 1 l bottles of liquor were ~$100 and up.

When you say $15 max, is that per drink or for the day?  Probably a silly question but if it’s per day, I may need to cancel that...LOL

  2. I’m looking at an Italy and Greece cruise on the Escape.  I’ve only cruised on Carnival so looking for answers,

Can you pre-order alcohol for your cabin?

Do the balcony dividers open so that your party in the next room can have one balcony’s?

What is your opinion on the beverage package?  Do you think that you get your money’s worth?

That’s all I can think of at the moment,  I appreciate any help you can give!

For our family, tied between visiting Bob Marley's house in Nine Mile (on a cruise) and going to Reggae Sumfest (land vacation).  Granted, we are huge reggae fans so we are totally biased 😊

I would have loved to go during Reggae Sumfest.  Thanks for the info.

We loved our excursion to The Blue Hole with Ricardo Riley from libertytoursjamaica.com.  We originally found him on Trip Advisor.  He made the entire day fun for our whole group.   We'd use him again without a doubt.   Hope you have a great vacation!

Thanks, I'll make a note of this.  The Blue Hole looks like it would fun - really pretty!

  5. Really, no one has done anything in Jamaica that they would recommend?   In the past, we went to the hummingbird place, Rose Hall, cruised the Black River - all of which were great.  I was just hoping to hear of some other things to do.

  6. We have a check-in time of 11:30 - 12 - is it possible to just drop off the luggage around that time and return at a later time to actually check-in?

We are trying to decide on doing that or just parking at the Fulton St Garage, go do our thing and return there and take the shuttle with our luggage to the ship.

Any suggestions on which might be the easiest/best way?

    Thanks!

  7. Funny you point that out. On 10, there is a gorgeous outdoor area right by the water with wicker seating and it is dedicated to smoking. I found that a little shocking. Nothing like that for non-smokers. There are only a few wooden bench like seats in that outside area on 3. Totally under utilized. And you're welcome for the review!

I am a non-smoker now but basically, the whole ship is set up for non-smokers (other than the casino). It stands to reason that they would have a comfortable place for a smoker to sit down and enjoy their cigarette :-)

  8. Honestly, I would just miss the check-in time. Go to Pat O'Briens then get your luggage and go to the ship. There's no penalty if you don't show up exactly when you're supposed to... buy they could make you stay once you check in.

Thanks! Pat's opens at 10:00 so if I can get everyone up and moving that morning then maybe we can get there and still make our check-in time...might be a little early for that Hurricane but I'm determined to get it before I get on that ship :-)

  9. Rooms that you already had? Did they open?

I'm praying that this thing is pretty accurate because we are counting on them being able to open. The last cruise they said they couldn't open them and basically ruined our "normal" cruising experience for my friend - she was not a happy camper :-)
