I love reading your trip report and look forward to each installment. We will be in Bangkok overnight as part of our cruise in December and will be staying at the Sheraton. I am looking forward to going across the river to Iconsiam   Where did you eat dinner in the mall?  We’re also taking a class at Blue Elephant cooking school   Which cooking school are you going to?

    Bonnie

Thank you so much.  The cooking school we'll be taking is Baipai Thai Cooking School.  We did this last year and enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again.  They pick you up at the hotel which is a good thing because its pretty far out, and down some odd tiny streets.  I think even if you had a map system you wouldn't be able to find this place let alone get back to the hotel.

Last night we had just gotten in, so we ate at the floating market place in Iconsiam, it's food stalls and little boat on a river in the basement area.  Good and you get to pick and choose, it's not a Food Court and it's kind of fun.

  2. Well, I have to eat my words. The convention is over and all the people on business have gone home. Even the hotel people said never again what a mistake to take that convention. Got a note from the GM of the hotel to apologize for any inconvenience. And I didn't even say anything. Now that it is over and few hundred people are gone this is a really nice hotel. Like I said before the service staff here are unbelievable "great". Had dinner at the hotel and it was very good. Hired a car and driver to go to Sintra and the beach today, full 8 hours. A little long but had a good time. Tonight when to a cooking school, fun,fun and more fun. Made a 3 course dinner, fish risotto, followed by chicken in a pot with chorizo and vegetables, salad and a Portuguese cake. Can't believe we cooked are own dinner and paid them to do it. I'm not going to do this on the Explorer, with all those great restaurants on the ship. Oh no, we did sign up for 3 cooking classes, but they are in the morning. All good here, just a few more days before sail away. Rick and Ron

  3. Also not meaning to hijack but couldn't help it...just picked up some anchovy-stuffed olives last week in Barcelona to take with us on th WC this January. NOT like pizza or Caesar Salad anchovies......these are quite mild and lovely in the martini. They'll be in the Stars Lounge fridge........ ;)

YES! They are terrific. We eat them all the time when we visit in the South of France. Agree they are not like the anchovies in a caesar. Good idea to pick up some for our cruise in Lisbon.

    Thanks!

  4. There is always someone who tries to change the subject of the post. So back to fashion and fabrics. I guess if I had lost or had late luggage following one on board I would probably have dinner in my suite. However, there are manufacturers that make slacks (women & men) made out of same fabric as sweats. You would never know. They say they are the most comfortable to travel in.

  5. With all your posts on one subject at this point who really cares.

You just can't seem to stop!

This is why I hesitate to post any comments on CC because who ever makes a suggestion to help others there is always someone who undermines the post or knows more!

  6. Obviously you did not read my post. I went to CDC website that you yourself posted and copied onto my post the CDC requirements for reporting.

Who was talking about Oceania I certainly was not! Why do you defend Regent when a code Red is just that! Influenza is a word that used freely as a catch all in laymen terms. There is no such thing as stomach flu. Influenza is a respiratory virus. I'll let you have the last word since you seem to be a infectious disease expert!

  7. I went to CDC (Vessel Santation Program) VSP website where a previous poster provided in a previous post here is what in the short criteria the CDC provided:

Copied and paste CDC Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP)

"When sailing from a foreign port to a U.S. port, cruise ships participating in the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) are required to report the total number of gastrointestinal (GI) illness cases–including zero–evaluated by the medical staff at least 24 hours before the ship arrives at the U.S. port.

VSP also requires cruise ships to send a separate notification when the GI illness count exceeds 2% of the total number of passengers or crew onboard.

Data on this page are from these surveillance reports and from CDC-led investigations. The GI illness cases reported are totals for the entire voyage and do not represent the number of active (symptomatic) GI cases at any given port of call or at disembarkation.

Cruise ship outbreak updates are posted when they meet the following criteria:

Fall within the purview of VSP (see*about VSP)

Are sailing on voyages from 3-21 days,

Are carrying 100 or more passengers, and

Are cruise ships in which 3% or more of passengers or crew reported symptoms of diarrheal disease to the ships medical staff during the voyage.

VSP may also post outbreak updates for gastrointestinal illness outbreaks of public health significance."

It goes on prior to the list that the CDC does not verify the numbers provided! Bottom line: they don't have to report anything!

I think if above poster experienced viral gastroenteritis (norovirus) perhaps their defense would be different.

  8. Sometimes the obvious answer escapes the only one who tries hardest to defend Regent. Maybe because she has the most to gain? Thankfully, someone watches the computer room while the crew bar is open.

The only constant in all of the code reds (how many?), are the crew. They stay on board for months, passengers stay on for weeks. Go figure...

Uncle D I agree with you. I enjoy reading CC, however I always hesitate to post because their are some that think their opinion is always right.

  9. Norovirus is viral gastroenteritis. However you can think what you want. The facts are if it's not norovirus why all the paper menu, removal of items from the table, etc.

Again as I indicated above I hesitate posting as there are some on this site that there opinion is the final word!

    I leave it at that!

  10. A coincidence , yesterday was Global Handwashing Day (Oct 15). From the CDC here is the PDF on handwashing on cruise ships.

As far as buffets on cruise ships. My post I did not mention any cruise line. I was talking in general about buffets be they on water or land. I don't know where your stats are from so Im not sure where your getting your facts on Norovirus on Oceana or Regent. Do you know how many breakouts of norovirus on Oceania versus Regent. Please share the information.

If you really know the numbers.

My posts were to help other travelers. I'm hesitate to post any comments as I have read in other subjects as some think they are the only opionions that count.

  11. Unfortunately peroxide alone does not kill norovirus. A combination of both peroxide and good old Clorox does. However I've never seen the combination in hand wipes. In spray I have. So do we go around with spray bottles, I don't think so.

You can buy the hand wipes brand "Wet Ones" in any market or drug stores. Supposedly their anti-bacterial agent with the combination of alcohol is effective against Norovirus. Now as far as cloth gloves IMO are not wise. They would hold any bacteria on any surface touched in the cloth! Just be careful!

My problem is with buffets. I know that many like to serve themselves, however for health reasons it's better that the crew serve you. Too many hands touching the serving utensils is a potential for disaster! You may have washed your hands, did the person before you and before them and so on. It's like in public bathrooms; you may have washed your hands, but when you touch the door handle did the person who exited before you wash his/her hands!

The best for everyone is good old fashion hand washing with soap and water. Or a anti-bacterial hand wipe!

  12. Goldenrod

Just wondering if a hazmat suit would be the appropriate attire for Regent [emoji16], perhaps you could dress it up with a scarf!

Kidding aside she probably caught the cold on the flight getting to the cruise ship! It's best to sit on the plane as close to the front as possible. Air flow goes front to back!

  13. Code Red is not the flu. That is a word to blame what it really is "Norovirus". When they start removing items from tables, using paper goods etc. They got a real issue on their hands. As a healthcare professional may I share some information on Norovirus!

Norovirus is not related to flu. Flu is an infection of the respiratory system that causes fever, chills, aches, and pains. In fact, there’s no such thing as stomach flu.* The confusion that it causes can have serious consequences.

Sometimes people don’t want the flu shot because they say they’ve already had a stomach flu.*

People become infected with noroviruses when they eat or drink contaminated foods and beverages. Raw or undercooked oysters and raw fruits and vegetables have been implicated in some outbreaks. You can also get infected if you touch an object or surface that has been infected with the virus and then touch your nose, mouth, or eyes.

What Are the Symptoms of a Norovirus Infection?

If you come down with a norovirus infection, you'll probably go from feeling completely healthy to absolutely miserable within a day or two after being exposed. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting (more often in children), watery diarrhea (more often in adults), and stomach cramps.

    Other norovirus symptoms include:

Low-grade fever, Chills,* Headache, Muscle aches,Fatigue

Most of these symptoms aren't serious, but diarrhea and vomiting can deplete your body of the fluid it needs, and you can become dehydrated. Children and the elderly are most susceptible to dehydration, as well as malnutrition from not getting enough nutrients.

If you have norovirus symptoms, your doctor can give you a stool test to confirm that you have the illness. However, norovirus diagnosis is usually made based only on symptoms.

Most passengers especially those at higher risk usually have had their flu shots, pneumonia shot, etc. So as it being a influenza virus on a ship one can be exposed and have no symptoms for days and be contagious. That's another story!

How can we prevent and help contain Norovirus.

    Good hand washing!

You can do all the wiping of your suite but is every passenger wiping theirs as well. But most important is hand washing. Before, after you go out and during your outing and after and when you return. Hand washing all days as medical professional would do.

  14. I have shipped to my departure city when I was doing a canal cruise Miami to Los Angeles. Since I live in California we usually leave a couple days early prior to the departure. We shipped wines from our cellar to our hotel. Fed Ex 2 day delivery. I've also shipped cases of wine from the winery direct to my hotel as well. (As a member they paid shipping). Then you need to order a van cab so luggage and boxes travel with to port. Be sure to tip the porter. I found the wine in my room before my luggage! Bought the shipping boxes at local wine/liquor warehouse. Not all of them have them. Call before driving over. The max I've shipped was 6 cases for a group of us.
