So, what has failed each time that the pods went down? Motor, thrust bearing, shaft seal, transformer, inverter (power SCR's, or control circuit boards), azimuthing system? I can't say, but it is highly unusual for these systems, which are required to be inspected by third party (class society) and serviced every drydocking, and the maintenance program to meet the manufacturer's and class society's

Believe me that drydocking is not the end all and be all for ship repairs.

This post, in its entirety, is exactly what this thread needed. Well said.

Coming from someone who's daily job is PLC's and VFD's (ironically a LOT of ABB drives) and deal with the safety of people's lives, it's nice to see someone try to sort out everything that is involved to anyone who hasn't worked in the industry, and may not entirely know how much goes into a system like this.

  2. I think that the Universal Studios characters (whatever falls under that umbrella) should start their own cruise line.

    A Marvel Comics ship

Can't happen. Universal only owns the rights to Marvel for use in theme parks under an existing deal. Disney owns everything Marvel now.

  3. ...never order what passes for lobster on a ship.....

But please don't try to say lobster isn't a great dish!!

I never said it wasn't, but based on the warm water ones they serve on ships. It is.

Most people have never had a real, freshly caught, cold water lobster. All they know is cruise ships, overcooked hibatchi, and Red Lobster. *shudder*

Unless you're getting a fresh cold water, you're better off enjoying some of the other amazing seafood out there.

  4. There's been quite a few changes over the last few years:

    • Nickelodeon gone
    • Geoffrey Zakarian gone
    • Cake Boss gone
    • Blue Man Group gone

Those 4 examples were the simple result of contracts expiring and not being renewed.

I know for a fact, due to my job and connections, that one of them was NOT NCL's choice but the other party involved opted to not renew. I'm sure several others were too.

Contracts have time limits and companies decide what they want to do after said date passes.

  5. As a chef, I never had understood the allure of the lobster on the ships. It is warm water lobster (spiny ) and really has zero flavor,

THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this for a very long time and have gotten attacked by what I call the "Crustacean Commandos".

  6. I agree with a previous poster. The best place to eat isn't on the plan.

Food Republic is amazing. I lost track of how many times we ate there when on the maiden T-A of the Escape. It was easily at least once each day, several days were two or more. We made it a goal to try the entire menu before we reached Miami.

  7. I usually pick up the flights the day or two after they become live. So 300+ days out since we already have the trip planned usually at that point.

This next one in Dec I purchased at the beginning of the year. Nonstop DTW to MIA then the return is nonstop TPA to DTW.

First class, $440 a person round trip. Same seats are now over $1k a person each way.

  8. I've been at M&G's with as little as 20 people and as large as, well, on the Escape TA they gave us the Manhattan Room and the Captain said it was the largest M&G NCL had seen.

There were easily 200+ people there. It was a lot of fun.
