We are sailing the Gem, Canada/New England in Sept, 2019. Are there any formal nights?

Fantastic. You can never take too many pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Money talks. This guy’s lounge chairs are bought and paid for. Towels were there an hour before he was, and they were placed there by the pool attendant [emoji15]Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Enjoy the cruise. Was on the Oasis a few years ago, it's a great ship, you'll enjoy. Bon voyage.

Our first cruise, RCI Serenade of the Seas, 7 day Alaskan, inside passage, 2005. Most definitely hooked.

This is an interesting thread. We are considering a New England cruise too, but we want to end in Boston. Is HAL the best or only cruise line for that?

We don't do the formal nights anymore. We do always dress, "smart casual" when in the mdr or a specialty restaurant. The only place for shorts and flip-flops...the buffet. And we dress like this (above) for disco night.[emoji6]

Hamradiocruiser, it is on the opposite side of the harbor from the tender port. Not within walking distance.

Thanks kiwimum. I've seen pictures and it looks like about a 15 to 20 minute walk on the beach, maybe a half hour. I know one has to zigzag through some neighborhoods to get up to the statue. I was just wondering how long that would take.
If anyone else on this thread has experience with this, any input would be appreciated.
Cheers, Will

Does anybody know how long a walk or hike it is to get to the statue that overlooks the beach at San Juan Del Sur?

We always use a travel agent, they also take care of airport transfers and find us the best hotel room, price and location and take care of our travel insurance too.

Be careful if you are on the Dawn. Last March they allowed a 12 year old do some stand up comedy and it turned into the most vulgar thing I ever heard. Wouldn't be surprised if the cruise director got fired for it.

While I understand that tender ports pose difficulties for some, I usually like them. I like the ride in and out. Watching port details resolve themselves as the boat gets closer. Motoring away for the ship, getting the full impact of its size as more and more of it comes into view. Time on a tender lets me gradually adjust to the destination. A little peace and quiet before the maelstrom of tour group assembly or the stifling wait for an elevator.
I agree, and it gives you a different perspective as you approach the port. I can usually get some neat pictures too.

The Royal will stop in Rio during her repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale to LA. It starts Feb 2, 2019.
That sounds like a great cruise. I'll have to check it out.

Our experience has been when you self disembark, you can go anytime but you must be off the ship by 10am.

I had cruised now and then and liked it fine. But once I was diagnosed with Celiac and had to follow a strict gluten free diet, I came to value cruising SO MUCH. On a cruise, I can spend the day touring through St Petersburg or Rome or wherever and still go 'home' to the ship for delicious SAFE food.
There is no way I would enjoy land travel. Eating in restaurants is always a gamble for me -even in my home town. At least in my home town, my vacation is not ruined - being exposed to gluten ends up with days in pain and hovering near the bathroom..... not what I want to do on vacation.
I am so thankful for the conscientious staff in the kitchens on the cruise lines. They make it possible for me to travel again!

We're with you. Although my wife is not Celiac, she is gluten intolerant and we have the same sentiment as you on travel.

I don't know how soon you are sailing, but we always book an airport transfer with the cruise booking, through the cruise line.

Transit thru Panama Canal Oct 4, 2016, checked out the "secret doors" prior to Panama Canal day. Cruise Director announced at the end of the previous night's show locations for good viewing via the "secret doors" on deck 10 & 11 of Coral Princess. So not so secret anymore, however great place to view, we were there 5:30 am and had a spot on the rail.
I've heard of the secret doors. We are on the Coral Princess next year for the Panama Canal from San Francisco. Did that area fill up quickly?

Hi, just watched your video in Cartagena. Did your cabbie wait for you each time you stopped?
Thanks, Will
