  1. I can navigate straight stairs with hand rails, but the "corkscrew" stairs on some Ama ships are a nightmare.  Actually took pictures and measured them.  Inside step can be only 4 inches towards the bottom.  I have been on 6 river cruises and have managed the rafting.  Elevators that go to all the decks are a godsend for a lot of us.  With all that said, Ama has been in contact with me, and I have a lovely woman managing my booking.  Also booked on another Ama cruise for southern France for late fall. So 2021 will be a busy year with two more Ama's  !!!   Just keeping my fingers crossed that the Lucia gets finished.  Already had to go through all the cancellations for a month long trip that was scheduled for this May, and don't want to do that again.  Thanks to all for the advice.

  2. All the ships have the stairs, but newer ones like the AmaLea, AmaMora and such also have the elevator that goes all the way down to bottom floor.  I always look in the brochure at the diagrams of the ships and it shows which ones have the elevators that go to all three decks.

  3. Thanks for the replies.  So far, I have not been able to get answers from AMA or travel agent. I will keep trying of course, but no one seems to have a solution.  Older Ama ships have those strange curving stairs from bottom deck with very narrow steps.   You almost have to scoot on your bottom if you have any handicap involving your legs !!!   I will keep trying to get some answers.

  4. We are booked on the AmaLucia next March/April for the Tulip Time cruise.  I found out yesterday, quite by accident, that they are not sure the ship will be completed by sail time.  They have not offered any solution.  My problem is we are on a very strict schedule (one passenger is a teacher) and we don't have any wiggle room.

I was told to wait and see, but if we do that, what happens if other cruise is sold out ?  There is one other that we could possibly take, but it is on an old ship with no elevator going to piano deck. I am handicapped and can't easily do those crazy curved stairs.  Sorry AMA, cannot afford your "upstairs" pricing right now !  Does anyone out there have any ideas ?  Will need to cancel air, hotel and tours if this cruise does not happen.

CaroleLee,   we booked directly with Delta.  Ama was exact same price for Premium Select as what Delta's website showed; plus I didn't have to pay Ama extra to book our preferred airline. We leave in May. CVG-JFK-ZUR; returen; AMS-DTW-CVG.  We have everything locked in.  Our travel agent found us a decent business class on United;  but I never fly United so didn't want to collect miles on an airline I may not fly again.

Just curious, can I ask how much Ama was going to charge to book preferred airline ?  Considering this for next cruise.  Still debating whether to use frequent flyer miles or book through Ama.  Thanks.

  6. I agree with you about the Magna.  We much prefer the "regular" ships.  We loved the AmaLea, AmaLyra.   The Lyra sails the Seine and the Paris to Normandy is my absolute favorite cruise. The villages and Monet's Gardens are not to be missed.  And of course the D-Day beaches.  Then we sailed on one of the first voyages of the AmaLea and did the Tulip cruise....second favorite.  If you go in December, do the Christmas markets on the Rhine.  The Danube water levels are too dicey, as we learned the hard way.  We are leaving for our second Christmas cruise on the Rhine this December.  We have also done Viking, and I guarantee that you will love AMA.  There is no comparison.  AMA is tons better than any other line out there.  Fantastic food and personal service.  Have fun !!!

  7. Posted on another forum, but no response.  So I will try here.

Booked on a two week cruise next spring.  Has anyone transferred their booking to a travel agent ?  We are only getting the Excursion credit as we booked an interior room.   Travel agent said he would provide a $325 OBC.  Sounds too good to be true.  Please, any advice  ??/

  8. Hope this is correct forum.  We are booked with a cruise line and want to transfer to an online travel agency, as we can get a pretty good OBC.  Cruise line is not offering us anything as we are in an interior room.  First time for us.  Anyone out there with advice about doing this ?  Smart move or just being greedy ???  Thanks in advance for any help.

  9. We had same experience on Nov. 9th Danube trip.  If they had been honest with us upfront, we would have cancelled.  We just heard from them this week.  They offered us $780.00 each on a $5000.00 trip.  This was our third AMA cruise and sadly will probably be our last.  My travel agent is in talks with them about the meager compensation.  On top of all the mess of no communication, we had approx. 40 drunken travel agents who were loud and rude.  The cruise manager was a total pig who refused to be of any help on any matter.  And yes, he has been reported to corporate.  Below is my journal of trip.

Budapest----straight to hotel, then river dinner. Just circled around two bridges. Food was inedible.

3 hour bus trip to Bratislava. No problems except we had to catch bus back to Vienna.

Bus tour of Vienna. We had free time, but everything was closed as it was Sunday. Took uber back to boat.

Durnstein---walking tour then back to boat to go to Melk. Took bus to Abbey, but it was dark so unable to see much.

Passau---walking tour, but it was dark, so didn't see much. Also raining so dangerous on cobblestones.

    Took bus to Regensberg.

Regensberg--walking tour with small amount of free time. Back to boat.

Took bus to Nuremberg. Bus tour the to hotel for horrible buffet dinner at hotel. (unbelievable)

Had to meet driver for airport at 4:30am. We were given a sack breakfast that had broken eggs and leaky yogurt.
had to throw away at airport.

all together, we had two tours in the dark and rain. One where everything was closed and a lot of time on buses.
We also had approx. 40-50 rowdy, drunken travel agents who ruined almost every evening on board. We could not sit
in lounge to listen to the limited entertainment as they were so loud and rude. Cruise Manager refused to do anything
    about it.

I am embarrassed that I encouraged two friends to take this trip and had to apologize over and over again.

  10. This whole topic makes me incredibly sad.  Went on my third AMA cruise in Nov. and it was a disaster.  Have heard nothing from AMA or my travel agent.  Spent thousands for next to nothing.

  11. We went on March 25th and it was too early for the tulips. But Keukenhof Gardens were still one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Plenty of other flowers were in bloom and the buildings were full of orchids and tulips. Worth seeing again and again. Have fun and enjoy !!!

  12. We are very excited to be on the Lea. I have no worries at all about the crew. I am sure they will bring in experienced people, and judging by our past trips with AMA, it will be flawless. I would have adopted some of these people---they were so kind and thoughtful in every thing they did. Already looking into a Danube cruise later in the year. Maybe another Christmas market trip. We did the Christmas one on the Rhine last year and had a great time.

  13. After all the trouble we had, there was no way we would use OBC for a future cruise. They were really not very nice about the whole situation. We had planned to use it for the extra excursions that they charge you to take. Oh well---lesson learned.

  14. I no longer have a relationship with that TA. It was his error that caused the mess, but I had all my papers with me and Viking still would not budge. We had planned to use the OBC for additional excursions. (They charge for theirs). I have since found a wonderful lady who is super efficient and has already booked me on another cruise. Second one on AMA--I love them.
