On the Princess ships "Dawn" "Sun" & "Sea" there is a deck far forward, even further forward than the bridge, on decks 10 & 11.
There are no directions on the ships as to how to access these decks but access is on both sides of the ship at the forward end of the long cabin corridors on decks 10 & 11.
A door at the very end of the corridors leads into an airlock and then another door inside the airlock leads out onto the decks.
The decks go from one side of the ship to the other and the views from here are unparalled for entering and leaving ports and for cruising the sounds. You are able to walk from port to starboard on the decks and there is nowhere on the ship that is further forward.
When in the open sea the doors are sometimes locked as it is very windy and a little dangerous out on these decks but in the sheltered waters and travelling at low speeds this is the best viewing position on the ship.
John
We were told about these doors last time we were on the Dawn, but could never find them...guess we were looking inthe wrong place...

Good subject.....thanks for the input.....we're heading through Fiordland in about 2-3 weeks on the Celebrity Solstice, as the itinerary indicates that we are heading up the East Coast, our veranda will look to the Coast.....besides we should get a great view of the harbour bridge as we head out of Sydney. :)

Some of the on line guys do amazing deals. But they only do them a few months away. I need then to be 12 months away so that I can plan my life, get leave etc. Maybe when I'm retired.
To find them google fly, stay, cruise, australia
Clue it could be the "1st" one
Raina
I've got to agree, I certainly check out the online deals, as well as the cruiseline sites, but it doesn't hurt to talk nicely to your TA as well about what you're looking for, our next cruise is on the Solstice in March, we found out about this deal through our TA who phoned us as soon as it was available so we had a choice of cabin...I thought the price was ok, but I noticed it went up fairly rapidly after we booked...

Hi.
I would like to know which cruise covers the entire Great Barrier Reef in Australia or at least which one covers the most of it.
Your best bet is to head to Cairns, lots of operators there who'll take you out through the reef....as mentioned, the larger cruise lines may go past there but even if you did get to spend some time there, can't imagine it would be long enough to see much of the reef.

Thats while its suits them. I had a small glitch with a card I use everyday..... the terminal kept refusing it , but no problem the checkout operator just got me to sign.......so they still accept signatures in NZ when they need or have to.
No worries, I know I was refused & as a safety measure, it wouldnt hurt to be prepared anyway......I can only go by personal experience & what I was told by that bank…..as a result of my experience I rarely sign a credit card....Amex being the exception & then only on the rare occasion.

Re Suva..beware ! I recollect on my last visit to Suva in 2007 on Regal Princess. On leaving the port gate we were approached by a smart looking bloke wearing a brown suit with some sort of govt ID displayed. He bailed us up and said he was from the tourist bureau and was going to 'look after us.' Well he pestered us, wanted to take us to a good jewellery shop, a good mens suit shop..'Get your suit made in two hours sir.' I got sick of this pest and said to him. 'Can you take me to Police HQ, I am one of those in Australia, I would like a tour of the police station.' Well he just looked horrified and did the bolt. So beware of SCAMMERS like this. A fraud he was of course.
During the day I did go to the police station at Suva Police HQ for a look around and was told by one of the officers there are plenty of scammers around the port waiting for cruise pax and purporting to be officials, like the one I encountered, just after their commissions at the various businesses.
We had a similar experience except in our case it was an older gentleman who was going to show us the best places to buy, personally I get rather wary of these sorts of people, after the 3rd shop, we did the bolt.....it's a shame they couldn't relocate those hanging power lines...looks really daggy, would make a difference to the place....otherwise it's a nice enough place to take your time and wander at your leisure.....be careful with the wooden souvenirs at the markets though... I 'm not sure if they all use treated timber....

Hi All,
Thanks for the well wishes.
I would have responded earlier but was waiting for the paperwork for my free cruise.
I know I post a lot, I was posting previously on CC using my wife's account (about 2010) but then she kicked me off and said for me to get my own account when I started posting without her sitting next to me.:D BTW, she calls me a post junkie.
Anyway, I enjoy the conversations online and the banter /debates that occur from time to time. I especially like providing useful info, I hope I can continue for many years to come.:D
I'm only a newbie here, but I too would like to put my 2c worth in to congratulate you on your achievement....

As others have said, times they are a changin':
Info on CBA website for merchants:
What’s changing?
All transactions processed on Australian issued cards at a POS terminal will soon require a PIN.
What about International Cards?
These changes are for Australian issued cards only. Your terminal will continue to process all other transactions as normal.
Why the change?
This is an industry driven initiative. Transactions processed using a PIN are much safer than signing, reducing the number of disputed and fraudulent transactions you may experience.
PIN transactions are also faster to process, reducing the time your customers are standing in line.
When will the changes come into effect?
The exact date is still to be finalised, but likely to be within the next 12 months.
We will update all our merchants as soon as we are aware of the date. You can check back to this page in early 2014 when we hope to be able to communicate a date.
There will be a period of approximately 3 months where issuers will still approve transactions where the cardholder signs rather than PINs. Post this timeframe, transactions will be declined when a PIN is not used to authorise the transaction.
What cards will be impacted?
All Australian issued credit and debit cards including MasterCard®; Visa; AMEX® and Diners cards will require a PIN as authorisation.
We have been getting mail about this for a little while.
Happy Cruising
The first time it happened to me was in NZ, I was about to sign and was advised that signatures were no longer valid in NZ, only pins....for me, it wasn't an issue, but I'm sure others could find it a real problem....when I spoke to my bank, I was told the Australia was going that way also....I understand that it eventually be a global thing....

I was just reading some lists of people's bucket list cruises/holidays and almost everyone had Australia/NZ, South Pacific or SE Asia on theirs. It made me realize how incredibly lucky we are to have all this in our bsckyard. I often lament that we can't just jump on a quick 7 night cruise every other weekend like in the US because of such a limited cruise season here, but this reminded me that I'm living in the middle of the seemingly most desired cruise destinations in the world, and it's so easy to access, even without a cruise.
Almost every Aussie has visited SE Asia or some of the Pacific islands, and visited the GBR. I take it for granted yet so many people have dreamt of making a once in a lifetime visit here and save and plan for years to be able to do it. Makes me remember and appreciate how amazing this part of the world really is and how lucky we are to live here :)
I'm hearing ya....and as with flipper133, we're not far the theme parks ourselves, being located between Jimbo & Beauie......we're off to see our original homeland via the Solstice early March (no kids this time)....its interesting to see how exciting some of the overseas passengers are getting about the cruise, and planning their tours to make the most of their time here, we're looking to relax and just enjoy the journey, many of the places in NZ we've been before but never cruised, done plenty of the 'milk run' cruises 'round the islands, looking at maybe doing a "Hawaii - Sydney" cruise next...
-
I really don't think they are value for money when compared to the longer cruises, however they still have value for having a cruise without having to block out a lot of holidays. They generally go over a weekend which makes them more attractive as well.:D
I have to agree, we've looked at a few but the cost is such that I'd rather pay the extra and make it a real holiday instead of a weekend away....

Hi Yeah-its-us, (great screen name)
We did the Dec 10 sailing from AKL to SYD on Solstice. I took the following picture of the outlets on the desk. You will need one of these adapters.
I was lucky enough that I had 1 of both types and could charge the phone or camera at the same time as using the computer.
I did do a review of our trip which is available at:
http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=246937
Enjoy your trip.
G'day Mark;
Read your review, shame about the loud music; hopefully it's not quite so loud on our trip...this is our first cruise on the Solstice, all previous cruises were with P&O and regardless that P&O is considered by many as entry level, I for one am a big fan...so I'm hoping that Celebrity is as good...I'm told it will be...
Best regards;
Anthony
-
Many thanks for that...I have 2x of the adapters on the right but none of those on the left....we're sailing on the Solstice SYD - AKL 10th March....again, many thanks for your help....
-
I'm not sure how to start a thread so I'll apologize first for hijacking this thread...but can anyone tell me what wall sockets the Solstice has? I know it has dual voltage 110/240V...it's the 240v I'm interested in, I'm looking at taking my phone charger and I'm wondering whether the plug will fit the wall socket or do I need to purchase an adapter?

Hi
We have cruised NZ a few times and done a combination of private and ships tours. This is what I reckon:
Dunedin: Done the Cadbury factory (sorry Bazz) and the ships Pub Hop Tour, which includes a visit to Speights Brewery. However my recommendation is Elms Wildlife Tour - a most professional organisation that well understands the situation (and risks) of passengers booking tours privately.
Akaroa: This town is the only tender port... and despite what some might say tendering (especially in sheltered waters) can be an adventure in itself. Explore the township, and arrange to take a 1.5 hour coach tour around the local sights - there is even a red double-decker London bus you can catch. Inquiries (and bookings) can be made at the Visitors Information Kiosk on the pier.
Wellington: The Te Papa museum is a must, and it is free.
Napier: A wander around this quaint town is rewarding, but we also booked a private tour to visit two wineries and a chocolate factory :)
Tauranga: A tour to Rotorua is always worthwhile, but we had visited before, so we booked a ships tour to visit a horse stud farm. Unfortunately Shirley was unwell so I had to cancel.
Auckland: we have rellies there, so our visits to Auckland usually mean having a beer or two at one of the Irish Pubs at the Quay side. Kelly Tarltons is Ok, but I have seen better (and its a bit exxy) and the bunjee jumping at the sky tower is definitely not our thing - but some like it.
We will probably cruise NZ again - it is always a fantastic experience.
cheers
Some good suggestions....again, we have rellies there as well, so we'll probably play it by ear.....first time 'round NZ for us as we've usually gone round the islands....thought it was about time we went around the land of our birth....which chocolate factory is located in Napier?
-
Hi Karon;
Debbie & I booked the cruise back in February and made the final payment last weekend, so it's all set.....will feel strange without our daughters with us though.....I guess we're relative newcomers considering the number of people here who've been cruising for years.....
We're from Cedar Grove in Queensland, Australia; it's about an hour southwest of Brisbane (or other side of the Gold Coast hinterland); originally from Auckland, New Zealand, so the North Island we know pretty well know and have lots of family & friends there but we haven't really seen that much of the South Island so we're looking forward to that.....we have lived in Sydney for over 20years but relocated to Brisbane about 10 years ago.....
Our travel agent suggested Celebrity Cruises to us, I wasn't sure at first because I really didn't know much about Celebrity......sounded expensive, but I was interested in Royal Caribbean, and as we'd already cruised with P&O a few times, we were also looking at Princess & Carnival Cruises.
We're both in our 50s, having spent many years, motorcycle touring, camping, & traveling in generally so we've found that we've very much taken to cruising.....
Hawaii is nice, but we have only flown there so to cruise there would be great.....a Christmas/NY cruise sounds great, hope it all goes well....
We're looking forward to meeting and making new friends on this cruise....hope to catch up with you all on the cruise......Best regards, Anthony
:)
-
My wife (Debbie) & I (Anthony) are heading out on this cruise...anyone else heading out on the same cruise?
First Celebrity cruise for us...
Had no interest in cruising until my 50th birthday when we thought we'd try something different....first cruise was with P&O on one of the milk runs around the islands, did the same cruise the following year..then in 2012...went around Fiji and some of the other islands with P&O again...this time we're heading around NZ....next time, maybe Sydney to Honolulu....

Where do I find the G'day Mate bit please?
Jilly:confused:
ha ha!!!! G'day; we're on the far side of the Gold Coast Hinterland.........:D
