  1. I just completed a cruise on the Grand Princess and played slots only twice during the voyage, for about an hour each time, on nonsmoking nights. During my second night of playing, I won a $20,000 jackpot. Last year, I saw a lady -- on a different Princess ship -- hit a $20,000 jackpot. So even though it is rare, it is possible.

  2. I just returned today from a 3-day cruise on the Ruby Princess, where I hit $1000 on a 3-coin progressive $.25 machine (can't remember the name, but there was a big monkey at the top). It was the top progressive jackpot on the machine; and I hit it on the 2nd day of the cruise. Not bad for playing 75 cents a pull. Right after I won, I heard them announce that someone else in the casino just won $2000 -- not sure on which machine.

This was the biggest jackpot I ever hit -- even with quite a few trips over the years to Las Vegas, Reno, Tahoe and local Indian casinos. Of course, since we were on the ship the entire three days, with no ports of call on the repositioning from Vancouver to Los Angeles, I put almost half of it back that same day. I did not play in the casino at all on the 3rd day; and I did leave with some profit. My entire cruise bill was covered, including my casino play, gratuities, future cruise credit and a small shopping purchase (I don't drink, so no liquor). And my entertainment cost was out of their pockets, not mine. Still, if you win a jackpot, cash out right away and don't go back to the casino!

Last February (2015), after playing quite awhile in Carnival Inspiration's casino, I hit about $780 on a Lobster Mania machine. This was on the last night of a 3-day President's Day weekend cruise from Los Angeles to Ensenada. After the win, a casino employee advised me to run, not walk, out of the casino. That was my 2nd biggest win ever -- and I did just what he said. :)

  3. We just received a Princess upsell offer via e-mail -- an inside cabin to a balcony for $99 each for a 7-day cruise. This is only the second upsell offer to come our way in 10 Princess cruises. Last year, we received an upsell offer to upgrade from a mini-suite to a full suite for $199 each. And years ago, we were upgraded for free from an obstructed ocean view to a mid ship Caribe balcony cabin. We accepted all three offers.

When booking these cruises, we had to let Princess know that we wanted an upgrade, if it became available. The other factor, I believe, was that all of these cruises were in the off-season, not peak cruising season. So maybe there is some rhyme or reason to the upsell process. Oh yes, we had booked directly with Princess. I felt that there would be a delay if an upsell offer became available and it had to go through a travel agent. These offers do sell out quickly.

However, I agree with those who said you should book a cabin you can live with, just in case the upgrade does not happen. ;)
