  1. So excited to follow along with your live report!   We are sailing in a month July 24-31.   We just found out that two of our days are on the emancipation holiday in Bermuda.   I was wondering if you could ask the minibus drivers (to Horseshoe Beach) will be running on the two holidays and if in any of the restaurants/stores in the Dockyard ask if they will be open.     That will help us plan our holiday!  Enjoy your trip and cannot wait to see your fun ahead!  Diane

My husband & I just moved from Mystic to Florida and we just returned home this afternoon from the Encore.  It was Cruise #52 for me but I forgot about posting in Cruise Critic!  We are now home!  Great cruise. On Tuesday night one of the handicapped restrooms near the theater was cordoned off. A gentleman who needed “to go” potty opened the door and encountered blood splatter everywhere and pools of blood on the floor plus the paper towel dispenser & hand dryer were ripped off the wall, but he had “to go” desperately and then reported it.  On Thursday night  the Captain announced over the intercom that there was a need for Type O negative blood for people to report to the 13th floor. And, then there was that emergency stop last night in Nassau!   Not sure what happened & doubt if we ever will.  Do you know what happened?

I heard someone cut an artery but only rumors.... a fellow Mystic native 🙂. Sorry we did not meet on board!

  3. We decided to take a chance and embark on the NCL Encore.  We LOVE the brand and especially the Escape having sailed her 3 times.  What I can say so far is she is an amazing vessel and the crew is amazing!  Our Cruise Critic meet and greet was terrific and so much fun!  We have Vibe passes and worth every penny!  I will write a full review when we get back but although no ship is perfect in every way so far the ENCORE has exceeded our expectations.

  4. We did this itinerary this year in February. The weather was definitely cool in 50s to 60s Most days. Low 70 in the Canaries. A beautiful itinerary. The Spanish coast is breathtaking. In Casablanca we did a tour through NCL of the Hassan II Mosque and taste of Morocco. It was AWESOME! Would not venture out on your own here and recommend a cruise line tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable and so professional. In the Canaries we did a tour to one of the resort towns , had time on our own and enjoyed a nice lunch. In Funchal we did the hop on hop off bus and saw many parts of Funchal.... enjoyed this port a lot! Great people and culture. In Granada we went to Gibraltar. Long bus ride but very much worth the trip to the rock. In Alicante, we toured the Santa Barbara Castle and explored the streets, enjoyed tapas and peopleople watched at the beach... My husband and I loved the Spirit. Definitely different experience than some of the other ships we have been on, but the staff and people we met were so great! Make sure you spend time in Barcelona before or after. Great City!

  5.

    Many thanks for the reply.

Just what we needed to hear!

Everyone has been so positive about the ship ... we board three weeks tomorrow (eek!) and,as we booked very late, we seem to have had no time to think about the cruise and plan things as we normally do.

Your post has been most helpful. We have been to some of the ports before. We have never visited Casablanca but had an "interesting experience" in Tangiers on Oceania some years ago... I imagine it will be similar.

We are looking forward to our first time in Madeira.

Thank you for the advice/information about the restaurants, bars & entertainment.

Hoping to leave as rested and satisfied as you, obviously, were.

    Thanks again!

  6. Just returned from a 10 day Canary Island cruise on the Spirit. It was without a doubt one of the best vacations we've ever had. We embarked in Barcelona and from there headed to Morocco. I would highly recommend booking the ship tour to the Hassan Mosque and that will allow you to see the city safely and without a doubt immerse you and what it's like there. We had an 80-year-old tour guide who had great passion for his country! From there we headed to the Canary Islands. Beautiful beautiful beautiful ! Funchal, Madera was beautiful as well we chose to do the hop on hop off bus here and without a doubt was awesome. When you book through the cruise line they take you on the full loop with a couple planned stops and then it runs for the three loops at the end guaranteeing you a trip back to the ship at the end of your day. We enjoyed Malaga and opted to do the Gibraltar tour there. Long drive to get there but worth it! In Alicante we opted to wander and very easy port to hit the key points. Santa Barbara Castle is a must see. Take the he elevator up for about 3 euros and the rest is free. Go early as the elevator opens at 10 and the que gets long. Incredible panoramic views. From there we went to the old city and then to the promenade for some shopping, sangria and tapas. As you figure it out, we did the ship because of the itinerary! Having said that, the Spirit is an amazing ship. The staff is among the best of the best and although this tends to be a training ship all the staff were amazing. We opted for 3 specialty restaurants and they were great. Cagney and Le Bestro were perfect. I would not do Teppanyaki there again. Not much interaction with guests and rushed. The main restaurants were great, with Windows our preference. Service in Garden was good but felt cramped and dark. Our reservations at 7:30'were perfect and never waited to be seated! Great variety on the menus. The Shows are great. Do not miss World Beat or Elements. All shows are good but these were great! We liked Champagne Charlie's in the evening. Great place with great entertainment and bartenders. Yes to the VAT. In all ports except Madeira and Morrocco and 3 hrs or so after leaving ports. Doesn't matter much to us, but it really bothered someI felt bad for the staff. The buffet was ok for lunch. We usually did breakfast in Windows. The other venues were good. We enjoyed Galaxy and Henry's from time to time. The casino was limited and seemed pretty poorly attended. A few smokers noted. The cruise director was very good. You will enjoy yourself. Cabins are smaller than wat we are used to but liked the set up of our BC Balcony. SMALL toilet area. Not sure whose idea that was. We gave done many NCL ships. Although the Spirit doesn't have all the bells and whistles that many of the bigger ships have,we found our experience perfect. We left this vacation feeling rested and very satisfied! We would definitely cruise the Spirit again! Enjoy your trip!

  7. We bid $25 over the minimum bid per person.

Our overall cost is $2200 less than present price for a BD. We booked early during free tax and port fee special in April. Happily surprised by the quick bid acceptance when our cost is so low in comparison to present prices! We do cruise NCL twice a year so maybe loyalty paid off for us

  8. Hi everyone,

Yesterday I received a bid opportunity for my 2/3 Spirit sailing 80 days prior. We bid on a balcony upgrade and email confirmation showed pending. I checked yesterday afternoon, offers are no longer on th NCL.com site an it now says processing when I click on modify/cancel and has said that all day today. Based on you experiences, do you think our bid was accepted?

  9. Well..... disappointed. Great cruise on Epic disembarking on 2/4. ( one day into new tier system). Was expecting to become Platinum with 21 points by booking 9 months in advance and a Latitude offer and should have had 77 points under old tier. Now only received 14 points and at 70 and still Gold under new tier. Fail NCL on the customer appreciation front. We are loyal customers and have 2 future cruise rewards. 7 cruises in 4 years....changing rules when we are embarking. Really NCL. What are you thinking????
