We are taking a 7 hour Veragua Rainforest & Tortuguero Canals tour in Puerto Limon in February.  I thought at one time I had read to wear long pants, I assume to protect against bug bites, but now I see the tour description just says comfortable clothes and shoes.   I expect it to be hot and humid, so I'd rather wear shorts.  I'll have insect repellent.   Does anyone have personal experience with this type of tour?  Were the bugs awful?

It is better to bring a mosquito repellent

Currently Del Monte and Dole are not allowing entry to the packing house, plantations can be seen outside

Just checked their website, they dont say how much the tours are or when they start.

The first thing the traveler is asked is at what time he must return to his cruise ship, to be 1 or 2 hours before his departure.

  4. We are on a carnival cruise with a short day in Limon. We don't arrive until 11. We really want to go to the Jaguar Research Center. Looks like to do that we will have to do a private tour. Which means we need to hire a private driver/tour guide. Does anyone have a reccomendation for someone they used recently?

On Tripadvisor, you can find independent tour operators, search What to do in Puerto Limon

  5. I would like to visit the Veragua Rainforest on our upcoming day in Puerto Limon during a Panama Canal Cruise. I don't see this included in a lot of combo tours, so it looks like I have two options -- arranging private transportation to get to the park and then paying the entrance fee, or taking the NCL Shore Excursion "Rainforest Extravaganza." The excursion also includes a pontoon boat ride through the canals first, and a meal.

Has anyone done this excursion?? Or is there anyone who has made their own way out to the park?

You can visit the Tripadvisor page (Things to do). Choose the best independent tour operator for Puerto Limón

  6. We will be in Puerto Limon from 8:30am to 4 in the afternoon on a Thursday. Does anyone have any tips on the best thing(s) to see and do there? We prefer to be independent or at least semi-independent, we do not enjoy the large, crowded tours. Thanks!

  7. We will be in Limon in early April and are looking for Zip Lining Recommendations. I have a Cooke questions:

    1. There are five times offered by the Princess (7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30. The 8:30 and 9:30 times are almost sold out, and they are the most expensive times. The 7:30 and later times are cheaper, and pretty much empty. I can only assume that has to do with temperature - especially for the later ones. Can people give me any inside information on things to consider in terms of weather. I assume the 7:30 is empty because it is pretty early to be up and off the ship.

    2. Are there operators that we can book with privately, either before hand or at the port, that are cheaper (and an equivalent experience to the cruise line's, which is "Original Canopy Zipline Tour at Veragua Rainforest? I think I need to make a decision fairly quickly. I've heard of an operator named "Oscar Brown." Not sure if he is the same person. Also, looks like we'd have to arrange our own transportation to and from the excursion. Is it worth the hassle?

    3. This is a buck list item. Neither of us are "crazy about" heights, but I think we can manage. What should we know as first timers?

    4. The ship's tour suggested bringing bug spray. How bad are the bugs? Are they mosquitos?

    Thanks. All responses are appreciated!

Jungle Breeze zipline is the best, check Tripadvisor for Independent tour operator

  8. We'll be there soon to celebrate our 20th. [emoji846]

We're not really interested in doing an eco tour kind of excursion, which seems to be the only type offered by Holland America and the independent operators.

So I'm curious if anyone might know what kind of tours are available once we get off the ship at the pier - city tours, snorkeling, something else?

    Thanks.

  9. Thanks for the info. I saw some independent tours which advertised the banana plantation, but was told only after I inquired that it was just a photo stop and not a visit inside. The shore excursion shown by the cruise line clearly shows people going inside. I guess I will press the issue when I get there and ask for an explanation as to why the cruise tours can go but not independent guides. Insurance maybe? I will keep trying to get to the bottom of this.

At the end of the last cruise ship season, the company "Del Monte" banned the entry to the packing house. to independent tours operators and also to the tours from The ship . Now the shore excursion from the ship is doing with the company "Dole" this company does not want to give permission to independent operators tours

  10. would like to take a private tour of Limon. can anyone recommend a tour company? would like a tour for only 6 of us. thank you

Check tripadvisor, find very good tour operators

  11. Following this as I was wondering the same thing. I sent an email to Your Lucky Tour about this excursion but haven't heard back from them. Wonder why they offer it if it is such a problem?!

Is not a problem, but for this tour it needed at least 6-8 people. The distance is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from the city.

  12. We will be arriving by ship in Puerto Limon, and we need transportation to the airport in San Jose. The only transfer offered by the ship leaves at 3AM to accommodate a large group with an early flight. We'd rather leave at a more reasonable hour since our flight is the next day.

Can you recommend a company that can provide this service?
