Is it okay to use a debit card when checking in?

When I check in at the cruise terminal I would rather not use a credit/debit card, I want to pay with cash, is that possible? Thanks for your replies.

While in port do I have to actually leave the ship to take advantage of Verizons rates or can I stay on the ship and get my carriers rates?

Also can anyone tell me how much it costs per minute to make a call from the ship while at sea?
