  1. While they're not consuming 100% more food, they are taking up 100% of the space that another individual could occupy. That individual would be spending money on things like drinks, shore excursions, gambling, specialty restaurants, tipping, etc. that all factor into a cruise line's bottom line. The cruise line still has to buy the same amount of fuel and keep the same number of staff members on board to serve each cabin whether there are one or two people in it.

I'm sure the OP got a pricing glitch as I also book solo and have always paid less than 200%. That said, they will not advertise or volunteer it if the single supplement for a particular cruise is less than 200% (which it often is), so solo cruisers should be sure to ask what the single supplement is.

Or with no one in it at all ;)

  2. For once I actually agree with CB, who was responding the the comment that charging 100% supplement is discriminatory. It's not. If you're taking up 2 people's worth of space the cruise line is not being discriminatory asking you to pay for it.

A separate issue is that in this case the cost is more than the cost for 2 people, which seems like a glitch and should be investigated.

I would tend to agree if we were simply talking about a hotel room. However, on a cruise there are many other expenses included in your cruise fare. Not the least of which is food. One should not be expected to pay a 100% supplement as they are likely not consuming 100% more food. ;)

  3. I'd disagree on the amount being the same....We've used UberXL once from LAX to home and the charge was $80 compared to $42 if we had taken a cab

I love Uber but they charged a $20+ fee for "Waiting" plus the airport fee and then the regular XL driving fee

Next time I'll just take a cab

Guess it depends on the city. Cleveland doesn't have a waiting fee.

  4. While I understand that some people would prefer the rewards on a credit card, to get them means you have to use the card. I think that they are too easy to fall back on for anything other than an emergency, therefore I don't.

Listen, not everyone is in the same place financially. I am more than financially sound. But I prefer to save and spend out of my every day budget to pay for my entertainment. I do not consider a cruise an emergency.

I have managed to pull myself out of the situation my ex husband dumped on me and left me with, and even prosper, in a very short period of time. I had the black Am Ex when I was single. I know what credit is and how to manage it well. I just figured out really fast after he was gone that the best way to live within MY means is to do it without credit. And I STILL manage several vacations a year and walk away from them without a bill. Unfortunately, I walk away with no bonus points either! LOL! :(

Very commendable! I think it's smart to know your limitations. I, too, live a credit-free lifestyle. There are debit cards out there with rewards, as well. I have one that gives me 1.5% cash back on all purchases monthly. I make an extra 10-20 dollars a month that way. More when I'm paying for a cruise! ;)

  5. 3 hotels that have good cruise pkgs are:

    Holiday Inn Express Rocky Point

    Hampton Inn Rocky Point

    Chase Suites Rocky Point

All of the above hotels are directly next to each other on Rocky Point Island...which is 5 min from Tampa Airport and a 15 min shuttle ride to the port.

Rocky Point overlooks Tampa Bay so the hotels have a nice waterfront view. There is a Bahama Breeze Restaurant between them so very convenient to walk over for dinner. They have entertainment on their deck each day starting at around 5pm.

It's a fun place with decent food, drinks and a Bay view.

All of the 3 hotels have almost an identical cruise pkg that includes an airport shuttle, free breakfast and a round trip shuttle to the port and then back to the airport or hotel after the cruise, for those that park their car.

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Rocky Point twice pre-cruise. I was very happy with the hotel and the smoothness of the shuttle service. The Hampton and Chase Suites are next door and look just as nice. I would go with the one that offered the best deal.

**** Not all of the Tampa cruise hotels offer the round trip shuttle. It's an added bonus as the return trip is $25 -$30 in Taxi fare from the port to TIA....

The downtown Tampa hotels will put you closer to the port but you will pay considerably more $$. They also do not offer an airport shuttle so figure at least $30 and up from Tampa Airport to the downtown area.

I'm a Tampa Bay area resident now and would suggest to avoid any hotels in the Stadium and Fairgrounds area. It's solely my opinion, but kind of a shady areas.

✈✈✈✈ I've made an 11:30 am flight out of Tampa. We did the self-assist debark and we're at the airport by 9:20. That was in perfect weather conditions with no delays. I believe that the cruise lines recommend flights from Tampa noon or after. I wouldn't be comfortable with anything before 11:30.

So glad I stumbled on this post! Planning a cruise April 2017 out of Tampa and unless we get a phenomenal deal on airfare, we're planning on driving down. At the moment, it looks like Chase Suites has the best pricing since we're a family of 5 and would have to pay an additional $60 with Holiday Inn for the kids. Thanks for the info!

  6. Late night is when they have the nightly gagaball tournament. It's sort of like dodgeball but the ball has to stay on the floor at all times so the ball doesn't travel as fast, and you only get people out by hitting them with the ball below the knees. My kids always had to do late night just for gagaball, and they usually made it to the end so it cost me an extra hour of late night time.

It's funny you said that! My son used to tell us about gagaball, and we'd correct him. "It's not gagaball, it's dodgeball." I guess he was right [emoji5]️

  7. I'm Baaack!

Normally when counting down to a vacation, I count down to the day vacation starts. However, I found I couldn't do that with this trip as I was taking an evening flight after working all day. You can't countdown to a workday! My shift flew by, thankfully, since I kept myself busy tying up loose ends so as not to burden my coworkers with any extra work. I'm so thoughtful!

Anyone who knows me, knows I suffer from severe road ragitis. I swear I got stuck behind every single law-abiding driver in Cleveland that evening. Don't these people know I'm going on vacation?!? Fortunately, despite promises to the contrary, DH was already home when I got there. We hopped in the car, picked up Mom and got behind every law-abiding driver I had missed on the drive home. Finally, we made it to the airport and we are officially on vacation!

I only have one observation to add to Mom's description of the flight. Coming into Atlanta, it was clear we were steering around some serious thunderstorms. It was really something to watch a storm from the side instead of from the ground. I have never seen a thunderstorm from that vantage point before. You can't really appreciate the magnitude of the cloud height from the ground. It was a sight that will stick with me for a long time to come.

    Miami:

I really enjoyed this city! I would certainly consider returning to explore it more in the future. It has a bit of a watered-down Vegas vibe to it with the palm trees and the colorful neon lights here and there. The view from our room couldn't have been more spectacular. We left the curtains open all night so that we could check out the city while nodding off.

If you're sailing from Miami and have never been to Bayside, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The little shops are fun to poke through, but the best part of Bayside is the banyan tree. I have never seen anything like it. It defies description and completely took my breath away. I could've taken a zillion pictures and spent hours lost in it's beauty. The sheer expanse of the canopy is unbelievable and could probably keep you dry during a torrential downpour.
