  1. Don't know if any of you enjoy Pinterest ...or not... but if you do... there are some fun Low Carb snacks and foods on there! Just put what your looking for in the search mode. You need to be on the look out for what is posted,...but know your Low Carb foods very well to know if it is something that Dr Atkins would pin or not!! :):p;)

What a good idea. I had not thought to do this, but I'll definitely check it out.

Okay, so I fell off the wagon, getting back on tomorrow. I really need to come up with a better plan for handling stress, because it is just a part of life. Right now though, it sends me into a carb craving place. I need a new comfort food like "Wow, things are crazy. I need chicken."

  2. Lisa, hope you have a great race.

Seago2, thanks for the recommendation on the podcast. I'll have to check it out.

Jean, your project is looking good. All the hard work is paying off.

My daughter had field day today. So, that was fun to watch. Kindergarteners running around like crazy people makes me laugh.

  3. Questions:

Has anyone ever done an egg fast? Just curious.

Does anyone here eat nuts? If the carbs are within an acceptable amount, does it interfere with losing?

If my ketosis sticks are purple, do I need to worry about: caffeine, nuts, anything else?

    How many of you exercise?

Do you worry about fat content?

    OK, thank you....

I have not done the egg fast, but I have been intrigued.

I do eat nuts, and it has not interfered with losing per se. However, I don't lose as quickly as I do when I'm not eating the nuts. So...do with that what you will.

If I have too much caffeine even if my ketostix are purple, I'm not losing well. My mom has experienced this too. She'll stall out.

I exercise mostly because I was to kind of tone what I've lost. My most current exercise is walking. It isn't too taxing and I feel like I've done something.

No, I do not worry about fat content at all.

  4. Hope y'all are having a better day than I am. Well, I haven't cheated on my diet, but I have one girl home sick (her birthday is Saturday with a big party...must get well.) I was on a field trip with the other one and couldn't get to her. The school did not call my husband, so they must not have thought it was that bad, but the baby still had to wait an hour for me to pick her up (the baby is almost 6.....and not even my youngest. The baby monicker gets placed as illness develops).

  5. Seems like a more rewarding necessary evil, now!

I know!! I'll hate it in the same way I hate exercise now as opposed to hating it with the pointless hatred I had before :D I'm still waiting for my love of exercise to emerge (it has been a lifetime of waiting, but I remain optimistic ;)

  6. I wonder how many calories weeding burns, Andrea? ;)

Well, you had me curious so I looked it up on livestrong.com and they said it is about 278 calories, which I find surprising. I would not have guessed that much although my soreness would indicate that amount for sure :D

  7. We are starting a Big yard project and I'll be moving dirt, pavers and pots for plants.... I think I'm a little sore just thinking about it! But, Meals on the Grill....and veggies.... and we'll see how I do this weekend! It's going to be warm - so I'm putting a Big water jug out there just to keep reminding me to stay hydrated!!

    Have a great weekend!

It is funny what things make me sore now. I lift weights now (just 5 lbs), but pulling weeds can still make me sore. I guess it is just a movement that I don't do all the time. Oh, and squatting can hurt my thighs. I should do that more probably, but then I'm afraid I'll hurt my knees. You have to judge the lesser of the evils.

  8.

18 days until my due date and up 19 lbs!!! I remember losing weight at the end- not packing on 4 lbs in less than a week!!!

That baby is doubling in size. You're doing all sorts of good. 19 is great! Any time now. How exciting!

  9. So, in the past we've talked about the Atkins / Low Carb whoosh!.. I had a whoosh of the scales this morning, so did my Hubby!... So my scales say that I was making good choices during my Galveston Girls weekend!! Yippee!!! :D:D

It works...but you have to stay with it!

Yes, stay with it. Must remember to stay with it! Congrats on your whoosh :)

Going to go drink some water.

  10. Great Job, Andrea! I couldn't come close to a 1/2 marathon. 20 minutes is impressive any way you slice it. :)

I am, however, doing a sprint triathlon May 19th for Memphis in May. 1/4-mile swim, 12-mile bike, 3-mile run (slog, in my case--I'm a horrible runner). I've only been training a couple of weeks, so finishing is my goal--anything else is gravy.

I lost a lot of muscle tone before and after my December shoulder surgery. It's coming back, but it's taking a while for my metabolism to kick back into gear. Mercy, I feel old.:o

Thanks. I'm very impressed with your tri. Have you done one before? I'm an even worse biker than I am runner (if there is a hill, I might have to get off the bike and walk it up, and I'm not even kidding). Finishing is a great goal. That was my first goal. My second was beating my first's time. My girls were cute; they thought that since I got a medal I won the whole thing. I let them know it was a victory even if several hundred (or more, who knows) finished before me.

I tell ya, I feel older every day. Okay...well...I realize technically I AM older every day, but that is not what I mean. I think it is the speed to which I recover that I miss the most. When I became sore this winter after throwing bread to ducks, I realized I was at the height of something (in my defense, I was throwing into the wind).

  11. I fell off the radar there for awhile. It was fun catching up on everyone's posts though.

So, I finished my half marathon and I cut 20 minutes off my previous time. This sounds more impressive than it is, because there were no potty breaks this half :) Still, I feel confident that I was at least 5 minutes faster :D

My in-laws were in town this weekend, and while they are wonderful people, I eat like it is my job whenever they are around. (shaking my head at myself).

Going to go drink some water.

  12. Fell off the wagon this weekend in the carb department. Back on I go tomorrow. Some days are just like that. I blame the fact that I ran 8 miles (4 against the wind) in 28 degree weather Saturday. My body thought I needed to pack on fat like I was living in the Arctic. It is either that or the fact that the Girl Scout cookies were delivered. One of those two :D

  13. The CDC report states that the average American consumes 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day before adding any extra salt from the salt shaker. U.S. Dietary Guidelines suggest a maximum of 2,300 mg a day for the average person and even less for groups with high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes.

Wow, that is interesting. I had no idea that we were consuming approximately 1000 mg more than the guidelines.

  14. Thanks for the link!

I have been doing the 14 day. I was doing great than went up a pound two days ago and stayed there today. Not sure what that is about. I never had it happen on induction before.

I'm with everyone that it was probably water retention either due to a salty food you ate, hormonal, or just one of those hmm... type things. Hopefully with the next loss it will go and take a couple of pound friends with it.

  15. Andrea ~ it's so true, whenever I don't eat enough, I don't do well. Sending you motivational vibes! Go, go, go!!:)

Thanks, Lisa! I can use all the motivation I can get. Running with the wind went awesome; it was the coming back into the wind that made me wonder if I should be on youtube.

  16. Andrea.........get those shoes moving... you'll get in your groove and just keep on going!

Have a terrific weekend everyone..... I sure plan too!!:)

Have a great time with your friend! I did get my shoes moving. I ran 7 miles today; so, the legs they are a pumpin'. I wonder what the conversion from running to warm chocolate melting cake is?;)

  17. So, there has been a lot on my schedule lately and I've been bad about not eating enough. I've found that I stall with Atkins if I don't eat enough too (I know it sounds crazy, but it is the truth). Today, I tried to do better in the afternoon (morning was still nutso). Luckily tomorrow is another day.

I'm supposed to run 3 miles today. I need motivational vibes, people, to get it done. I've been "off" and it is just easier to not run. However, it will not help me come Saturday when I have to run 7.

  18. The salt intake issue is interesting. For me, I know it can raise my weight a little, but it helps me avoid cramping and headaches when I have a little more sodium. I don't remember which book now, but in one of them (Atkins for Life? Six-Week Cure?) they actually recommend you increase sodium intake, especially in the first couple of weeks, to avoid "induction flu" - that nasty feeling you get when you start low-carb. Now I like to have a cup of chicken broth or vegetable broth between meals where before I would have diet soda or green tea.

That is interesting, because I know that I craved salt during induction. I wonder if my body was saying "hey, this is what I need; pay attention."

  19. So... Let me ask you...............If you had to ..... could you go right to...and put your hands on your copy of the Atkins Book?? You know....to refer too....:)

Yep I know where it is. It is actually at my mom's :) I think she has two copies, but one we share back and forth. I'm not sure why...it just has seemed to work for us.

  20. Thank You so much for sharing with me. Where do you find the list. I have been trying to

navigate the Atkins site and it sure isn't like when I used to visit it.

The most user friendly list I use is Atkins but on the Sugar Free Sheila site here http://www.sugarfreesheila.com/InductionFoodsList.html It makes it easy to refer to when I have to go back into induction. Be sure to look at the *notes, because it will remind you where hidden carbs might be located.

  21. OK I got to ask with all the talk here. Are most people here doing Atkins? Sounds like alot are doing something else. Is there anybody that has made it a long term lifestyle and are things still working out for you?

I have gone back to induction. I went out and got the test strips. I'm not having much luck with the color changing. Could I be drinking TOO much water causing dilution?

I'm doing Atkins. It is truly the only thing that works for me. I have hypothyroidism and I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my first child. My doctor told me because of that (the gestational not hypo) I was at risk for Type II diabetes within the next 10 years. So, it was important for me to lose weight, but the hypothyroidism makes it difficult even when my medications say my thyroid is performing well enough. Atkins makes it possible to lose weight. My problems occur when I get off of Atkins because I give myself permission to go crazy with food (which would be unsuccessful in any diet/lifestyle). Atkins would probably call me a carbohydrate addict, and I wouldn't be able to dispute it.

Like Lisa said you can still be losing weight and keytones can be present whether the strips change. You can also never go actually into ketosis (just be borderline) and still lose weight. Her advice of checking carbs is good as well as making sure you are strictly following Atkins advice on allowed items. I've been out of induction for awhile, so when I go back in I have to look at the list again to make sure I'm not including something like peanut butter that is not allowed those first two weeks (some people can get away with it during induction, others can't). Wishing you much luck!!

  22. Dear Jean;

I think that we should name you the cheerleader for the group. You always make me feel better and you cheer everyone on. How nice to have you.

I second the nomination. Okay, maybe there isn't really a nomination voting process here. I guess all the primaries and debates are overflowing into other aspects of my life. Still, Jean, you are a very positive energy here, and I certainly appreciate it as well. Well, I'm off to convince myself that running 6 miles will be fun.
