I am freaking out. I have two kids.. One thatll be vaccinated within ONE WEEK of the needed time and one thats only 9 y/o. :{ My first booking is the Sept 27 m-f Mexican Cruise, so I am hoping that my 9 y/o gets in.

My daughters Bday is Aug14th, I'm taking her that very day to get her shot. If I do the second shot exactly 3 weeks out she will be fully vaccinated by the week before we sail..

Hope yours works out also!   Ours is a 7 year old....the plan is he will get the vaccine (if they start offering them to his age group like they are talking in early September).  I just hate not knowing and getting his hopes up he will be cruising again and then not be able to go.

Has anyone ever had Chris Williams as your Cruise Director? What's he like?

Yes!  He is one of our favorite cruise directors.  He is so fun.  High energy and everywhere literally.  He is SO talented and a wonderful performer on his own.  His game shows/love and marriage are fabulous.  I can't wait to sail with him again!  We have Cookie on our upcoming one and we like him also!

  3. We normally cruise 3 to 4 times a year.  It is our getaway from life (work, cell phones, electronics, aging parents).  I truly miss it.  I really took for granted the calmness that a weeks cruise brought me....and it kept me going until the next one about 3 months later.  I haven't had a vacation in a year.  Haven't been able to "score" the vaccination.  So it seems like I am "stuck" on a hamster wheel of doing basically nothing but work.  So the only boat I personally am on is the struggle boat.  😞

This reminds me a family cruise we took a a few summers ago. The drink package was a deal breaker. One person in the cabin wanted to purchase the drink package and the other individual did not drink alcohol and was not going to consume that many non alcohol drinks in a day. Why would one cabin mates rights/beliefs be violated and they be forced to conform? Carnival told us that either both persons in the cabin buy the package or none will have the package. This was sad because we actually lost a couple of family members who cancelled their rooms.

Sometimes the rules need to be re-evaluated to fit the updated society standards.

If you had multiple who canceled their "rooms" as you said...all you have to do is when making reservations, put the drinkers all in one room/room.  Book a room/rooms with the non drinkers.  (if you have 2 couples going and staying a couple in each room, if the guys drink and the girls don't, book the guys together in one room and the girls together in another room) Once you get on the boat, get a courtesy key card for each one the room they want to be in.  Our PVP always books our rooms the cheapest way with kids/adults then we get courtesy keys so each can sleep in whatever room.

    We've cruised twice with John.

First time was in 2011, 12 day Mediterranean cruise out of Barcelona on the brand new Magic.  John was the Cruise Director.

Second time was in in 2015, 11 day Journeys cruise out of New Orleans to Bermuda ending in San Juan with calls in between.  That cruise was on the Dream and John was John plus whoever the Dream's CD was at the time.

Some impressions may have been ship, crew or itinerary related.  But, 2 cruises with different itineraries and 4 years apart, John was a common element both times.

The captain's receptions were more substantial, 'not phoned in' comes to mind as being different from the usual Carnival event.  The captain and the crew were in no hurry to leave and made a point of talking to individual passengers.  I don't know that this was a direct effect of John's presence.  Nonetheless it made an impression on me.

John was very approachable and visible.

John seemed to give more attention to what type and where the cruises were sailing.  By this I mean his comments were nuanced during events like the sail away party or welcome show in the main theater.  This was very noticeable when we did a second Mediterranean cruise in 2016 on the Vista.  Everything was very standard Carnival generic on that cruise.  That's not a terrible thing.  It just wasn't the 2011 Magic cruise with John's savvy dialog.

There are many CD's with good comic timing.  John is another level above on the Love & Marriage show and any else he touches for that matter.

John is chatty over the ship's public address in a good way including more thoughtful anecdotal information about upcoming ports or events on ship.  Some will bristle or remind me that the better CD's do this too.  I think John's years of experience make him seem more relaxed in his expertise than some.  Your upcoming cruise may be a little different depending on what role the actual CD plays.

The final thing that comes to mind in terms of being different was the food in the main dining room.  This observation is probably shaky ground because we have both time and circumstances to consider.  But, it was awesome on both 2011 Mediterranean and 2015 Journeys.  Full disclosure, the 2015 Journeys cruise included a traditional everything and the kitchen sink midnight buffet and wonderful food in the MDR.  Of course wouldn't you know that the food on the 2016 Vista Mediterranean cruise, sans John was just good, not great.  Not sure how much of a John factor was in play, probably more of a change in budget than anything else.

I haven't given you as many things not to miss as I would have liked.  But, I hope this gives you some sense of the overall experience sailing with John.  Please let us know when you get back next year what the experience was like.

Thank you for your reply and your experiences!  It will be a fun experience for us, I think!  We enjoy his sense of humor and his bluntness.  We've had some good CD's with The Flying Scottsman probably my favorite.  We had Matt Mitchum and he wasn't our favorite.  We had others that were so blah, I really don't remember their names.  Thanks again for the reply!

Red Status on this page does not indicate a ship is having problems. It means the cruise line has not completed all the requirements to make it green, which grants the ship the ability to transfer crew using commercial transportation (airlines.)

It went from green to red, so it did have everything in order.   I had read the reasons it "could" be red but it tends to make me think it isn't paperwork related because of the change in status.

Thank you for the details!  I hadn't read those yet (been busy with a snow and ice storm since we booked!).

  8. As long as you have the documents to connect the two names (marriage certificate original copy showing maiden name to married name) she should be allowed to board if her booking name is maiden and her ID (passport/drivers license) is married name.  Make sure you take original documents.  I would call ahead to my PVP and get it changed.  This is the reason we use a PVP...we have a person that will take care of us.  (My daughter sailed with us and her passport was still maiden name but her booking name was married name.  I had taken a picture of her marriage certificate and had it on my phone.  They allowed her to board.  I had no idea until we showed up her passport was still maiden name!)

There is another way to look at this.  If there are 500 crew members and 3 with the virus then that equals .006 percent.  That's a much lower percentage than if they lived on shore.  You might be better off sailing.

I know I am exaggerating but it is food for thought.  Now if I could only get the vaccine.

Oh...I'd LOVE to take my chances on a ship given the chance!  I'd wear my mask, get my vaccine and enjoy my balcony!  But...if the example you give of 3 with the virus on the ship, given the close quarters and shared areas of a ship, that 3 would turn very quickly into hundreds, so I doubt the CDC will let cruising begin anytime soon.  I am READY as soon as they let us!  We have 2 booked right now and hoping for no more cancellations.  I still believe in cruising and Carnival!   I should get the vaccine next week (by looking at the amount they are giving weekly and my number....I am about 240 away and they do 300 a week!).  Hopefully you get yours soon!

Here are the Dive In Movies for the month of September

    Aladdin (2019)
    Godzilla: King of the Monsters
    Captain Marvel
    Avengers: Endgame
    X-Men: Dark Phoenix
    Shazam!
    Glass
    Bohemian Rhapsody
    The Upside
    Isn't It Romantic
    Men in Black: International
    Alita: Battle Angel
The Secret Life Of Pets 2
    Detective Pikachu

John Wick Chapter 3 - Late Night Movie

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - Pirates Day movie

How do you know which movie will be shown on a certain boat?  Going on Horizon during September.

  11. Anyone else feeling uneasy about the Dominican Republic port of La Romana?  We have a cruise scheduled on the Horizon coming up and we were excited about the excursion we had planned thru Carnival (beach including drinks/food).  John Heald posted today on facebook reassuring passengers that DR Amber Cove is totally safe, but he refuses to mention his passengers on La Romana.  I think Carnival should re-route La Romana cruise ships to Amber Cove for the safety of their guests.  We have never been to DR before.  How does everyone feel about the current situation and would you get off the ship?

  12. II would just bring all the legal documentation that shows all those names are her.  Last cruise my daughter booked by her married last name, but her passport was still under her maiden name (drivers license was married name).  I had a picture of her marriage license on my phone that tied the two together and we had no problem.  They did ask to see the phone with the marriage license photo.  If your bank has a free notary, maybe even have a notarized statement of her legal names and all variations.

  13. Can anyone tell me if there is any free "flavored" water  (like Royal Caribbean has) on the Vista?  I know there is water and lemonade free at the drinks spots, but can't remember if there is also a flavored water?  I recently gave up pop so I will be relying on the free drinks and lemonade is a little too sweet/sugary to drink a lot of.

Also I have read that the Havana Retreat is open to everyone after 7 PM.  Can anyone confirm that?

We are trying a different area of the ship and have a balcony on deck 2 forward.  Anyone stayed near it and have opinions?  Rough sailing?   I have also read that elevators have more of a wait on the Vista and am wondering if that will be a problem being that low?

Matt Mitcham is our CD.  Anyone had him?  Our favorite of all time is The Flying Scotsman Chris so hoping Matt is as much fun as him!

Any other tips or things we should know?  Thanks so much!

  14. We signed up for My Family Time Dining for our upcoming cruise (on Liberty of the Seas). It sounds perfect as my grandson can eat in the main dining room with us then they pick him up at the table and take him to Aquanauts! (My Family Time Dining is offered for the first seating time in our main dining room, for children ages three to 11. Kids enjoy their meal within 40 minutes of seating, before heading to the evening's

    Adventure Ocean

activities. The program starts the second evening you're onboard.)
