I had the same debate and wanted May, but went with my parents and had to go September. We just returned from the Sept. 10 - 17 and had the best weather they stated they have had in a long time. Sunny skies and low 60's in Juneau. When we docked in Skagway it was drizzling, but it burned off and warmed up nicely. Ketchikan, it was cloudy early morning, and again burned off. Glacier Bay it drizzled most of the morning. I was never cold and we ended up dragging our coats around. We left our balcony door open most of the time and even at night when we were sleeping. We saw tons of people in shorts and flip flops. September is the end of the season so most of the stores in port were 50% off of everything.
From all my research our experience was the expection and not the norm. We were so glad it was not cold and raining the entire trip. You just never know. Book what will work for you at the price you are willing to pay and hope for the best. We did and totally lucked out.

MissColtsLover, I saw that dress on a couple of different sites and was going to purchase and they did not come in my size. :(
I ended up buying this: http://www.womanwithin.com/clothing/Glamorous-double-layer-pants-by-Candlelight-and-Champagne.aspx?PfId=52394&DeptId=9304&ProductTypeId=1
There is currently a 40% off promo code on the home page.
I'm considering getting the matching top, but I have a white lace flowered print long sleeved top with multi-colored sequines I bought at Catos that will work well with it and a silver flowered jewerly set to dress it up.

I didn't find the black one. But there are so many black dresses and the pictures are small.

Looking around, I found this site:
They have plus sizes. I also want a pant set and was looking at this white beaded top with black velvet or suede pants to go with it:

This is what was recommended to me and fortunatley it worked out for us.
No one can predict the weather and even good weather statisically is not guarenteed.
I understand that everyone wants good weather on their trip and no matter how much planning it may or may not happen.
I provided our experience and answered the OP's question, and I stick with my prior comment. It is their decision as to what to do with all the information they receive.
