  1. One thing to consider--the media always makes it look worst than it really is. They will find one place that has severe damage which may be 5% of the area and make it look like the whole area is in the same condition. During Harvey a small tornado hit on the end of our street and if you believed the media, tho whole subdivision had been wiped out.

I would assume that Royal have personal in place who are giving them the real story instead of the stuff the media is putting out.

  2. Jumping in so I can see any updates that may come through from people. My family (11 in total) are suppose to be flying in to Houston on Saturday afternoon, and boarding the Liberty on Sunday. We are keeping an eye on everything we can and trying to prepare for all possibilities. Even if we make it into Houston Saturday afternoon, what are the chances we won't be able to make it down to the port Sunday due to flooding? And will the parking lots even be accessible to park? Assuming the ship is even able to make it back into from its current trip due to the port closure right now. Obviously our problems are nothing compared to the residents in the area, but we want to make it work if at all possible so are trying to plan for any scenario to get us close enough to get to the ship if it keeps its schedule or is delayed.

The airlines are allowing flight changes with no charge.

The area between Houston an Galveston is marsh but the road is fairly high so do not think it will flood but the road to the port may. One of the things they are concerned about is if the storm comes past Galveston moving to the NE, the bay side may cause the flooding and there is no seawall protection from that side of the island,. There is only a seawall on the Gulf side.

  3. I am in Houston and the latest information we have is that the storm will come ashore tomorrow at Corpus and make a circle and go out to sea again turning NE and hugging the coast passing around twenty miles south of Galveston on Tuesday.

The problem will be flooding of the Island starting tomorrow and them the winds on Tuesday

  4. If the problem is as stated, there is no mystery on doing the job. This type of job is a routine type job and done in every repair yard in the world.

I was a Chief Engineer and Port Engineer for more years than I want to remember for a very large fleet of ships and this is one job that I did not lose any sleep over because it was so routine.

  5. Since the blades are bolted on to the hub, they could replace the blades in an extended turn-around day, or remove them one port and install the new ones the next port. I'm a bit surprised that there isn't a spare set of blades in the fleet, with at least 3 ships using the same propeller design, plus they could "borrow" the ones from the Oasis4 (been known to have been done).

Looking at the Cofferdam movie, it does not look like the blades bolt on to the hub but is a one piece prop.

  6. We just contacted them. I was hung up on before I could get to the point. Great customer service! Staying with Carnival from now on. Understand the contract states they can do this, however making the change a day or two after final payments were made is really low. Glad we get to sail on a busted ship to a port that we don't even want to go to!

Let me tell you about our six day cruise to nowhere on Carnival. We left late the first day but they said "No Problem, we will make the first port a little late". This went on every day except the last when a miracle happened and we were able to make the discharge port on time.

We were deeply disappointed as the only reason we booked this cruise was to dive on the stops.

Needless to say, we have never cruised on them again

  7. We were very interested in this cruise until we looked at the itinerary. Yes, it makes a stop in Aqaba, Jordan, but no stops in Oman and just one stop in Israel and a stop in Chania, Crete before ending in Barcelona. Not a great itin for a Suez Canal cruise IMO. Also, the canal crossing is scheduled for overnight as well. Don't know why they do this, must be a reason though.

The Canal is open for trips from the Med in the day time and the other way at night. This is how the Canal rule makers control traffic. It is their rule

  8. I don't think Harborside Drive is the main issue. People routinely complain about other things, including distance to airports, fog, required 2-night stays in hotels, Texas liquor tax issues...

There are around 11 million people who live within 4 hrs driving time to Galveston. I think this will fill a couple of ships. Getting to the port is not much worst that many ports that we have been to such as Southampton, Rome and Port Canaveral.

I think one of the things that keeps them away from California is the cost of doing business from there. Just the addition cost of the fuel ( they can only use low sulfur Diesel which is more than double the cost of bunker fuel) would probably be equal to going out of Texas with an empty ship.

  9. Booze is plentiful for underage kids.

My nephew went on a couple of cruises with us in the past.

He found a group of others his age that were able to come up with a lot of liquor. Not drinks, but full bottles.

I don't know where they got it from but they did plenty.

It didn't seem like a big deal though.....

I doubt very much it was a RCCL ship. It is just about impossible for adults to get a bottle of booze
