  1. My wife and I did a very similar itinerary on Liberty of the Seas in 2014 (Rome, Naples, Barcelona, Marseilles, Monaco, Florence/Pisa). There is so much to see and do in each of these cities that you’ll definitely want to go back! We got to Rome a day early and stayed two extra days in Rome afterwards, so three full days in Rome, which is the minimum if you want to see the best of what Rome has to offer. We spent a full port day (on our own) in Barcelona and hung out on Las Ramblas, toured La Sagrada Familia, and roamed Park Guell. It was a packed day, and we didn’t even scratch the surface of what Barcelona has to offer. We are definitely going back to Barcelona in the future.

We feel that we saw everything we wanted to see in the other ports in the time we were allotted, although I personally would have liked more time to see more of Naples.

We did ship shore excursions in Naples,Marseille, and Pisa. We did Barcelona and Monaco on our own. We felt rushed in Monaco only because I got paranoid about missing the train back to the port [we made it back on the ship with an hour to spare].

My main bit of advice is to be ready for a port-intensive vacation. If you’re serious about going out and spending a full day in each port, you’re going to be worn out by the end of the trip. It’s not like a ‘relaxing’ Caribbean cruise, but the beauty and history of these Mediterranean ports is so worth it!

Think of a Mediterranean cruise as just a taste that will leave you wanting more. You could easily spend several days in each of these ports, there’s just that much to see and do! We planned our Mediterranean cruise as a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ vacation, but we fell in love and are already planning a return trip!
