  1. August is normally a nice and dry month but so far its been horrible. The forecast for next weeks calls for rain.

I really cant say how it will be at the end of August.

    The temps should be 15C-17C...

Prepare for rain and fog and everything else is a bonus...

Thanks for your response! I will come prepared for whatever happens the day we are there. I'm so excited to be coming!

  2. There seems to have been be a bit of confusion lately about which tickets are required for transport between Warnemuende and Rostock. Hope this clears things up.

Re Public Transport. There are two possibilities.

    1. A single ticket (Einzelfahrkarte), cost 1.70euros, covers the full journey from Warnemuende to Rostock City Centre, ie. train ride from Warnemuende to the Central station and the tram ride to any of the 3 stops in the city centre. There is no such thing as a return ticket.

    2. A day ticket (Tageskarte), cost 4.50euros, covers as many journeys as you like, all day on any public transport within Warnemuende/Rostock. Please note that the 'ferry' between Warnemuende and Rostock is a private tour boat not part of the public transport system.

So if you only want to go to the City and return obviously single tickets are the best value. This also gives the option of taking the boat, 8euro, one way. There are other routes which you can take to get back to the ship using a single ticket on the train and tram, the English lady in the Kropeliner Tor has some good ideas which give you a different view of the City and inner suburbs. Tickets can be bought from the machines on the station in Warnemuende and at the City tram stops. If you go into the ticket office make sure you do not ask for a return as they will then sell you a day ticket, an uneccessary 2.20 for a couple!

When you get off the train in Rostock go down one level to the concourse. There you will see stairs down to the trams. Take the stairs to platform A marked City, the sign is just above the stairway. Take a number 5 or a number 6 tram to any of the three city stops - Neuer Markt, Lange Str or Kroepeliner Tor.

Very Important Do not forget to validate your ticket in the little orange box at the beginning of the train platform in Warnemuende, you only have to do this once. Miss a train if you have to, there will be another in 10mins and it is better than a 40euro fine!! (bitter experience talking here). Have fun in Rostock. We love it, hope you will too.

Got to stop to thank you for this post even it has was so long ago you might never see this reply. I have been searching all day for this precise info and am so grateful to find it. Thanks again and I look forward to visiting Germany once again in a couple of weeks. :)

  3.

Even when we fly into Miami we stay at Embassy Suites on 17th Street in FLL. You can get a taxi there. On return you can get a taxi to the airport. If your flight is late enough in the afternoon you can use Luggage Valet which picks up and checks your luggage the night before so you get off the ship later but without having to search for luggage. Your luggage is waiting for you when you get to your home airport. Very Nice with no problem.

  4. Fortunately when we selected Tauck for our river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam last year we were guided by friends who had done several land tours with Tauck and highly recommended them. They were right. I am an introvert and can't wait to go again. The four of us stuck together most meal times at a table for four although there were a few times when you were joined by others. I am not familiar with rooms on Tauck for more than two persons but they do offer special pricing for single rooms. There were persons in the 20's on our cruise. Many of the staff on a Tauck ship are younger and I know of cruisers who went running in the mornings with a staff member. One was the captain's wife. When we were in a region that had a place to climb there was one of tour directors who offered to take persons who wanted to hike on the hike up a mountain or two to see a special sight. Otherwise we had a choice between a guided tour, an introductory tour and time on our own, or to stay on the ship and rest up for the day if we wanted some alone time. We had musicians, lecturers, and glass blowers join us on the boat sometimes in the day time and sometimes at night. There was also a pianist who provided music in the evenings for those who stayed up later. Our dinner hour was open seating between 6 and 8:30 whenever you wanted. We liked to eat early and get to bed earlier. The food was very good. I do like to try new things but even the person with us who likes to stick to more familiar foods never had a problem finding a good meal. There was lots of variation and quite delicious. On Tauck all of your food, water, alcohol, as well as all your excursions are included in the price. That is something to consider when choosing a line. Do you prefer to pay upfront and sit back and enjoy or do you want to add on extras and pay at the end. Some lines do not include all beverages. They may include wine with dinner but you have to put other drinks during the day on your room tab. Tauck also offers special excursion such as our night in Vienna at the Princes Palace with special food and entertainment. We cruise a lot and will be leaving for one very soon, but nothing will even top this river cruise. When you look at the Tauck website and they say you will feel like a member of the family they are not kidding. It was hard to say good-bye. It was more than a cruise, it was truly a grand experience! Hope these comments along with those before will have you make a choice, but do go, it is worth every penny!!!!

  5. Thanks again! I assumed dining on a river cruise was like Anytime (Open) Dining on a cruise ship and that you could arrive within a certain period...guess not!

Better I adjust my expectations beforehand!

Just for general information, the way of serving the evening meal will be different with different lines. My only experience is with Tauck. We had open seating from 6 - 8:30 each evening. Each table was served individually as your party came in to eat or an open table filled up. For parties of over 7 a reservation was needed so that size table would be available. Breakfast and lunches were mostly buffet although breakfast was also made to order in the kitchen for certain items. All seatings were open seating.

  6. Thank you mj_holiday.

We are taking this cruise in October on Tauck.

We would love to read a review on the Tauck cruise as we are considering this one for a couple of years from now. We did Budapest to Amsterdam with Tauck last August. Have a great river cruise!

  7. We did the Embera Indian village tour in 2006. It was very interesting. Took an excursion to Panama City for a walking tour there in 2008. At Colon you can get off the ship and walk into the port area. Those years there was only a temporary craft area to see but we got some nice things there. Since that time Panama has taken over and I am expecting to see a little improvement in the Colon port this October. Will see for sure when we get there, but our plans are to walk off and check it out.

  8. Are there any cruises that have longer in the Panama Canal so there can be excursions to see Panama? I wouldn't want to be on an excursion while the ship was going through the canal and am hoping there may be some with stops.

You do not need two days although we will have two this time in October on Jewel of the Seas. We have been there two other times from the Caribbean side. We cruised through the canal, disembarked in the lake, went on excursions and were taken to meet the ship in the afternoon at Colon. Those who stayed on the ship did go back through the same locks cruising them twice, but once was enough for us. The second time we took an excursion to and toured Panama City on foot. There was plenty of time.

  9. Thanks! I'll get around the rest of it once I get more photos transferred to photobucket.

I sure wish Cruise Critic would let you upload photos directly.

    JoAnn

Would you mind giving me a little info on photobucket, if it is not too complicated for this space. I could see no way to upload pictures on CC, perhaps I did not search hard enough to learn, but I have one review I might consider sharing of a river cruise if I knew how to do so in the future. Thanks!

  10. I agree! I dislike more than I like with the recent refurbishments (and finishes, furnishings and fixtures that need repaired are not being touched). We have booked a B2B on the Jewel, pre-refurbishment, because of our recent post-refurbishment experiences.

I so agree with all you said. We were so happy to book the Panama cruise on Jewel for October 10, 2015 before the refurbishment. My all time favorite ship is the Original Brilliance. We've done four cruises on O. Brilliance. I'm counting on being reminded of those fun times when embark on Jewel in LA.
