  1. We went on Breakaway in December (and Escape is an updated sister ship - at least that what they say). We cruised on Jewel, Star, and Dawn and Breakaway was my least favorite ship. One of the reasons was exactly what Gracelyn mentioned - no places to 'hang out". Especially if the cruise is out of NY during cold months you really need some 'hang out' space as outside was not an option in December (not to mention the ice blizzard storm we were in - but that's besides the point).

So that's why we're splurging on the Thermal Spa - to have quiet place. I vowed not to do this type of ships again LOL but 1) any cruise is better than no cruise 2) the price was too good to pass..

I also absolutely HATED the buffet. Not even the food (nothing to brag about - hardly any salad bar for example) but the layout was awful.  People cutting lines - no direction as to which way the lines are going. Awful.

Many people were hanging out around Cagneys during the day when they were closed - there were many chairs there.  The library was always packed with people...

  2. There is a buffet set up at Margaritaville for breakfast that does not cost extra. There are usually snacks set up in the casino in the evenings that don't cost extra. And you can have "continental breakfast" delivered to your room via room service in the mornings by completing the provided door hanger cards. That include cold items like cereal, fruit, and pastries as well as milk, coffee, and tea.

I just remember that Breakaway had a themed buffet lunch in Moderno on sea days. Do you know if they do something similar on Escape?

  3. Just because balconies say “sold out” now does not mean they don’t have one for you right now. It just means they are not selling any more balcony cabins to anybody else at this time. They may have inventory of balconies that they are not showing you. Or it is possible that they could be out of balcony inventory at this moment until somebody gets upgraded, freeing up a cabin for you. No matter, they will find a balcony if you don’t bid and win an upgrade.

Should you bid? Well, you only pay the upgrade charge for the first two passengers, so your girls would upgrade with you for free... that’s a deal. Take a look at Haven Suite configurations and talk to the girls. When I was a girl, I would have slept on a blanket or cushion on the floor if I had to just experience a cruise (nonetheless something like the Haven), but your kids might not see it the same way I would have. Then decide if you want to bid. I imagine bidding will be competitive for a Thanksgiving week cruise, though I’d take a shot if it were me.

Thanks! We will give it a try and see. Meanwhile we got assignment a cabin and it’s angled so we got a bigger balcony! So we are very happy regardless what happens!

  4. I booked Sail Away balcony just couple of days ago and it seems that the ship sold out since then of ALL balcony and Mini Suite cabins.(it's a Thanksgiving cruise).

We still haven't been assigned a room so I am curious what happens if they oversold on category? Especially with all the upgrade games going on etc.

So I assume we'll get a regular balcony though we did get a request to bid for Haven. The cheapest offer was "$400/pp" bid for a category that is sold out. . Second one starts at $750/pp bu I don't think I can get DH to go for it.

We have two 14 girls (tall) and I don't think sleeping on sofa bed would work for them - even in Haven suite. Bunks are probabbly better for them...

But the Haven bid is so tempting especailly since we got an amazing deal on Sail Away because of credits we had. .

  5. We will be in Nassau in November and I know that one of our 14yo would love to do something active and “exciting”. Is there an Amazing Race like activity? Or some water activities that would be appropriate? Even a beach with a banana boat would be probably fine.

    I’m open to suggestions!

She loved parasailing in key west but I’m weary of doing such activities outside of the US.

  6. IMHO you're putting too much stress/concerns on yourself.

If you really want to sit at the bar "Just do it". I'm guessing MOST people could care less if you're drinking or not.

You are so right - I have been on so many cruises but because I am not a drinker I just always felt a little odd asking for water. Strange, huh? Will work on self-confidence on this cruise - ha ha!

  7. I was looking at the shows available on Escape on NCL site for our Thanksgiving cruise and didn't see anything interesting. I am curious if that list is it? I'm thinking of the traditional shows with singers and dancers etc in the Theater.

I was on Breakaway during winter and missed at least 2 shows due to the weather (cancelled) but here I nothing catches my eye.

    Thank you,

    Ela

  8. Other than the size of the actual balcony being larger on Escape, they are otherwise identical.

Well, there are USB outlets on the night lamps on either side of the bed on Escape. I don't recall those on Breakaway.

Thank you! The balcony was a bit small in BA so this is a nice addition! And YES to extra outlets for my teens :-)

  9. I would think that the majority of people sailing from New York this time of year are people who live within driving distance. There may be a few flying in to meet up with friends or family, but those who have to get on a plane anyway would rather fly to a southern port where they would enjoy nice weather much earlier in their cruise.

There were many Europeans and Canadians who flew to this crude not to mentioned a group of 150 tourists from Hong Kong.
