You said your mom doesn't want to transport her scooter. But, would she

consider renting a scooter or wheelchair? With a scooter, you would probably need a accessible room.

Our room is already booked and paid in full, we didnt get an accessible room because for the interior that we chose there were no more available, we would have had to have gone to a more expensive balcony cabin.  She doesnt like using the scooters anyway because she says after even a short period of time she is in a lot of pain.  We may just go with renting a wheelchair

She rarely uses her own scooter because she says being on it is actually painful for her, so she wouldnt want a scooter either way.  I'm thinking about going ahead and renting a wheelchair.  Looked at the rates and they really arent very expensive.

  3. Hello,

I am looking for suggestions for excursions for someone who is mobility challenged and cannot tolerate much walking.  This is my moms first cruise and I would really like this to be a great experience for her.  She has Fibromyalgia, chronic degenerative disc disease, and arthritis in her hips.  So a lot of walking is not in our cards for this trip.  She has a Walker that has a seat on it so that she can stop and take breaks when needed.  She doesnt want to take her wheelchair or scooter with us because she doesnt want me to have to push her around everywhere (regardless of how much I have told her that I am perfectly fine with doing it) and she doesnt want the hassle of trying to transport the scooter so she has opted for using her Walker which has wheels and a seat.  We will want to do things that we can easily take a pedi cab or taxi to, and where she will be able to relax and enjoy things.  Food and drink excursions, or things with minimal walking.  Thank you in advance.

Flying with a scooter is usually not a big deal.  You do have to call the airline and register the details of the scooter...make/model, weight, type of battery (sealed, dry cell).

Occasionally there is is a bit of a delay at the destination.  You must specify that you want it delivered to the gangway.

It’s the lack of independence that is the limitation of a wheelchair versus a scooter.

she isnt confined to using the wheelchair and can actually walk around, it just does get pretty painful for her if she has to do too much walking.  i want her to be able to enjoy this trip as much as she can.  Unfortunately with her ailments she is always in some amount of pain at all times so i just want to try to limit the triggers of her pain.

And as a courtesy to others, please don't leave it in the hallway to keep it from taking up cabin space.  Someone down the hall from us did that last week, and a number of times I saw others in scooters/wheelchairs/pushing strollers struggle to get past it, especially at times of day when housekeeping carts were also lining the hallway.

I wouldnt even dream of leaving it in the hallway, i've seen too many kiddos (and some adults for that matter) running wild on the ships who feel like they can do whatever they want and I would be worried that someone would mess with it that shouldnt

You gave a lot of info, but there is always more.  Example.  Age?  Some elderly, who never used a scooter, will find it really hard to control (personal experience with this one).  Imagine trying to get into doors, and elevators etc. if you have poor coordination.  It can be very frustrating.

Wheelchairs that are pushed "when needed" are sometimes better to use.  How willing are you to be the pusher?  Over carpet it can be hard.  You can buy a wheelchair, especially if you think in the future you will need it.  Like going shopping.  Next, consider a transport chair.  If it will be "barely used" on the ship, these are ideal for travel.  You can buy it for less than $100.00

So, I have a scooter, a travel scooter (Tzoro), a wheelchair, and a transport chair for my wife.  Each item is for specific reasons and each one gets used.  We travel around the world.  The cost of the "right" mobilitity devices are priceless when it allows freedom.

she is 69,  she has a wheelchair and a scooter at home but just trying to see which is more cost effective as well as determine how difficult it may be to transport a wheelchair and/or scooter since we will be flying to the port location.  I figured that it would be easier to deal with the wheelchair than it would be a scooter in regards to getting it on / off the plane?

as for pushing her in the wheelchair, i have no problems with that at all, I was actually doing that for both my mother and father when they needed help going to the hospitals for tests or anywhere else.  The wheelchair that she has is very easy to push and navigate.

I highly recommend renting a scooter.   You do not need an accessible cabin.  The scooter gets delivered to the cabin which is where you leave it at the end of the cruise.  The ones they rent (usually Pride GoGo Elite) fit through the doors just fine.  Yes, you do need to find a place tuck it in.  I have found you can push it under the desk a bit.  I rented one for my mom and after the first rental I ended up buying her one as it made such a difference for her.   We have never needed an accessible cabin.

Remember that renting a wheelchair is OK, BUT IT NEEDS PUSHING and that would be you.  It gets very tiring on carpet and it limits independence of both people.

do you know what the typical rental rate is?

We drove from West Coast of FL to East Coast for cruise and I found a parking company that had a van to lift him and the chair to the van.  I just booked Harmony for a burial at sea and one cousin coming from Phoenix to join the cruise has MS and will be bringing her wheelchair on plane.  She does it frequently.  I guess she arranges it with the airlines.  There were no HC cabins available so I booked her in a junior suite.  I picked my scooter up in the terminal as opposed to having it waiting in cabin and then drove it off ship to return it.  There is a discount for doing so.  I will be booking a scooter for Harmony since it is such a huge ship.  Have sailed on Allure and Oasis and will need the scooter to scoot around ship.

The ship we are looking at is the Allure

A power wheelchair (my personal preference, but a bit harder to master) or a scooter will be your friend you probably need an accessible room, as most wheelchairs won’t fit through the door of a standard cabin without being folded or dismantled.

the one we have at home does fold easily which is fine since she isnt confined to the chair just needs it more for times when she will have to do a lot of walking.  Walking through the grocery store can be difficult even for her so she usually uses the motorized carts provided in the stores.

Sorry for your loss.  I lost my husband of 39 years on February 13.  RC will not provide a wheelchair for use on ship.  They will transport you onto the ship and off the ship.  I took my husband's 'transport chair" on our final cruise and I also rented a scooter from Scootaround.  Loved the scooter as I too have mobility issues.  Enjoy your cruise with your mother.

I am so very sorry for your loss as well.  My parents would have been together 42 years on the 11th of this month.
I knew that they would transport on and off ship as I went on a cruise with a friend who needed assistance on and off ship, i just wasnt sure about the rest.  I appreciate your response and the information.    You mentioned that you took your husbands chair.  Did have to fly to your port or did you drive?  We will be flying since we are in Ohio and and the cruise we are looking at will be out of Fort Lauderdale.  If you flew, how is the chair stored on the plane?  does it have to be checked?

  11. I have been on mulitple cruises, not on RC yet, but I am looking at possibly going on a RC cruise in September with my mom.  My mom has not ever been on a cruise, but it was my dad's wish for her to go with me at least once.  My dad had been sick for a while, the past couple of years he had deteriorated very quickly.  He wasnt able to travel due to his condition and she was scared that if she left for a few days that something may happen when we were away.  He just passed away a couple of days ago and over the past week he had made her promise that she would go with me on a cruise once he was gone.  The issue is that my mom as fibromyalgia, chronic degenerative disk disease, and arthritis in her back and hips making standing, sitting and walking for long periods very painful and difficult on her.  The only way that she will be able to go on a trip like this is if we use a wheelchair so my question is this... We dont really need an accessible room because she isnt confined to a wheelchair, she can get up and walk.
    1.  Will RC provide a wheelchair for us to use for the entire cruise
    2.  Will the wheelchair be one that can be folded/collapsed to fit into the room if we dont get an accessible room

    3.  Will RC require us to have an accessble room (which is more expensive) for them to provide a wheelchair

  12. I'm going on my yearly cruise with my friends/family and I'm the only single person. I called them and they said they can't help me w/rooms right now. What I mean by that is, NCL has solo rooms for people who are smart (single!!)

Honestly tho, the cruise is in march, carnival horizon, 8 day.... if I book alone, I'll be paying full price and that won't happen.

Any tips for carnival? I'm the one who picked this cruise too. If I knew my buddy I usually room with would actually start dating this girl, I would of went back to NCL and got my own room! This sucks, any advice for single cruisers on Carnival!?

Around December/ January my travel agent who i had never met face to face posted on FB that she was going to New Orleans for training and while there she was going to go ahead and go on a cruise but wanted a roommate to help cut the expense of the room and asked who wanted to go along... I had her send me the info and it was too good to pass up so i went. I had a fabulous time!

so ... I would post on social media if you havent already and see if you can find someone who would like to room with you. Or you can see if someone in your group is willing to upgrade to a cabin that has the capacity for 3 or 4 people so that you can split the room with them which would benefit all of you because 3 in a room is usually much cheaper for all in the room. Carnival does do 3rd person free sometimes so that savings would be split up with all of you.

  13. My wife/family and I enjoyed our last cruise so much. I told my wife that I'd love to book the exact same cruise (out of the exact same port, exact same ship, exact same stops) again later this year, and she said I was crazy. hah

For me....*shrug*....I kinda liked the idea? You'd be familiar with the ship, familiar with the stops and what not. I don't know. Have any of you ever done it multiple times and enjoyed it (or NOT enjoyed it?) Thoughts?

Yes! I was on the Triumph in April out of NOLA going to Cozumel and Progresso, I am going on the same ship and itinerary this Saturday!!

  14. my son and his buddy are talking about a cruise. His buddy has a record, owes child support so doesn’t have a drivers license but has state issued ID, and can’t get a passport because of his record. So, will a birth certificate get him on the ship and state issued ID be enough to get back on board in ports? Ya, I know if something happens.... but that’s not my problem. And he’s actually a good guy, doing right with his daughter now, she’s living with him.

for a closed loop cruise - that is where you are leaving / returning to the same US port. the required documents are a state issued picture ID and a birth certificate or proof of citizenship. Some ports do require additional documentation/visas - such as Cuba, but you will have to check your itinerary information to see what would be required. At the very least if there is a port that will require something he does not have he would just have to stay on the ship rather than get off at the port

  15. Question: Only our luggage tags have FTTF on them. I have just checked again and there is no mention of FTTF on the tags. Should the boarding passes have the logo?

you should see the FTTF logo at the top left of your boarding passes as well as the logo on each end of your Luggage tags. You will have to go back into your Print Documents to see the updated Boarding passes and luggage tags. I just purchased the FTTF yesterday and the logo showed on mine immediately after the purchase.

  16. Or those who complain about military men/women who wear their dress uniforms for elegant night? Sorry but if I EVER heard anyone complain about this on a cruise they likely would not be back to the dining room as I will embarrass them so they would be ordering room service for the rest of the cruise. Much like all Marines will tell you, there is no EX for military people. I am 68 and if needed I would gladly put on a uniform, a much larger one than when I got out of the Air Force 42 years ago and do the job they trained me to do.

I didnt serve in the military but did and still do have family who did/do and I am right there with you on making sure that those people who complain should be shamed! Thank you so much for your service !! If i ever get the honor of cruising with you I would love to shake your hand !!

  17. So true. We were on a Carnival cruise 9/2015. DH complained non-stop...about me spending too much time in the casino, about being on a cruise...about everything. We were "that" miserable couple you saw...fighting in public.

Came home and within 2 weeks I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then we've been on many cruises ...and he's more than happy because I'm still here to waste my time and money.

Sometimes it takes "being without" to appreciate what you have.

Prayers that you will have many more years of cruising ahead of you!

  18. Did you feel a lot of motion? People keep saying how rocky the ship is. We are going in February on Ecstasy. We usually do larger ships, so I’m nervous about motion sickness. I’ll take my Bonine [emoji1360]

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

My first cruise was on the Ecstasy back in 2013, since then I have been on the Dream, Breeze, and the Triumph. I did feel the motion a lot more on the Ecstasy than i have on the other ships so far but personally for me I enjoyed it, it was a gentle sway, nothing that was overwhelming. There were two days on the Breeze where we were in some rough waters where the motion was bad enough to throw me off balance and while I typically don't get motion sick, after two days of that I did get a little nauseous. Did not get sick at all on the Ecstasy.

  19. Everyone has their own life story but how individuals react to the up's and down's in life determines their persona.

My family just returned after being evacuated from the coast of NC due to hurricane Florence. There were so many levels of devastation. We have friends who have trees down in the middle of their homes which are no longer habitable and others like us who had roof damage, fence damage, broken lights, soffit and trim ripped away. Folks died and others were injured. It's during these times when the best and the worst come out in people. Most people began working on their own issues but soon thereafter neighbors were helping each other. Then there were looters.... There were tears and laughter throughout most days. It may be years before our community regains it's sense of normalcy. The main lesson learned from this disaster is that this is just "stuff". Life and health are clearly the main concerns. Loosing memories of loved ones who have passed rates a close second because those memories can't be replaced.

DW and I are trying to keep things in perspective as we are booked on the Sunshine Nov 1, 2018. That is our light at the end of the tunnel and I can guarantee you......a little rust, long lines, slow food service, and slight inconvenience won't mean a hill of beans. We're happy to be healthy enough to cruise soon and we'll get to our house damages AFTER the folks who are truly desperate have their needs met. Keeping things in perspective may even add a few years to this special thing we have called LIFE.

Anyone know where I can get a good deal on a chainsaw?.........................Nuff said.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear that you and your family are safe. I'm sorry to hear that you have to deal with the damages and I hope you are able to enjoy your cruise in November. Prayers to you all that things start looking better down there for you soon. when my youngest was just a couple of months old we had a flash flood, I was living in a trailer back then and the water damage to my home was bad enough that we couldnt go back to living there, to top it off our place was looted as well so what was recoverable was looted and taken before we could even go back. I had some jewelry that was taken that broke my heart because they were very sentimental pieces, my grandmothers watch, a ring my mom gave me that she had from when she was young, a ring and necklace set that was given to me for my 16th birthday, ... while its sad that i will never have those things in my life, i do have the memories of when and why those were given to me and that can never be taken.

  20. Love your post! As I gear up for my next one in two days, I was thinking about how fortunate I was. How fortunate that I have someone to enjoy it with, that I can afford it, that I'm healthy and even alive to be able to go. There are so many people who have none of these things. I couldn't imagine such a life!

There's a big difference between something legitimately going wrong and the miserable people who complain about everything, and try to justify their negativity. No one gives a crap about "your hard earned money". We've all worked hard for our money. For every "inedible meal," there's 10 people who loved that same meal. For every complainer who had their experience ruined by tableclothes, there's 20 other people enjoying their time without even noticing it. And on and on.

I'm sorry but the complainers are just unhappy people. Take offense to that all you want. I have friends and family members that are complainers. I still love them, but they tend to be unhappy often. They are contributing to their own problems. Lighten up and have a good time. No one likes a busy body,

Thank you!! and add to that those who complain about the wait staff dancing and singing in the MDR ?? really ? why would you complain about people having fun??? what the hell are you there for if you arent there to have fun? I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when they do that and i get up and dance with them, as does my younger son. He has only been on one cruise so far and he talked for MONTHS about the wait staff dancing in the dining room and pulling him up to dance with them. Some people just dont understand that their negativity is contagious and can really cloud how others see the good things that are in front of them. Or those who complain about military men/women who wear their dress uniforms for elegant night? are you kidding me? why in the world would you complain about someone who fights for our freedoms showing their pride in their country and profession? My younger son loves police, firemen, emts, and military he looks up to them all like they are rock stars, and is actually more excited to meet one of them than he would be to meet a famous actor or singer, so for those who do complain about things like that there is a child or another person sitting right next to you while you are complaining who loves exactly what you are complaining about and its not fair to that person beside you to have that negativity put a dark cloud over their happiness!

  21. Yep!! Is there always room for improvement on cruises, of course. Are things perfect? Of course not! But are they things that make or break my vacation? Nope!! We've always enjoyed our vacations.

We are also in a similar situation, having lost a child 5 years ago. Our son knows we do these things because we know all too well how short life can be. We're fortunate that we can afford to take the vacations we do though. We want our son to enjoy life, learn things, and know that you should do the things you want to do, when you can do them. It's great that you're doing what you can to get out there as well. I hope you continue to have the chance to travel and see things! And honestly, a little adversity in your travels can also be a teaching lesson!

I am so very sorry for your loss, i can only imagine how devastating that would be. My boys are my world and the thought of anything happening to either of them terrifies me. No parent should ever outlive their child. My heart goes out to you. I feel blessed every day that I wake up and they are both with me. I almost lost my oldest son when he was 2 to a rare childhood disease. Then i almost lost my youngest son when i was 7 months pregnant for him. So both of them are my miracle babies and I cherish every moment I have with them.

I do try to use adversity to teach my kids as well as learn for myself how to make the best out of bad situations. Over the past few weeks a lot of obstacles have come up that have threatened to almost cause us to have to cancel this trip. We are just praying that nothing else goes wrong.
