  1. Which ships have single cabins and from your experiences which ones are best??

I know NCL has its studios ..... who else compares?

Also do all the ships have hosted single programs with daily get togethers? NCL does every evening in the Studio Lounge with an assistant cruise director. What other ships have to see this on?????

    Thanks

  2. I was just on the Norwegian Breakaway as a solo. The MDR hostess looked at me like I was from Mars when I asked about joining up for a large table. They never offered that option for me.

If you want a single table they were fine with that in the MDRs.

The single program they were running on the ship did a communal table every night at 6 pm in one of the dining rooms. They had a singles get together at 5 pm and went to dinner at 6 pm. The assistant cruise director each night simple asked who wants to go to dinner and with a show of hands got the group a table. The last night he hosted a table in the DR.

None of the specialty restaurants other than the tepanyaki were set for shares. By nature they have to join you up at the hibachi tables but they charge a supplement to go to that dining room.

  3. Of all the cruise ships / cruise lines who has the best programming for children -- especially pre-teen and young teens?

More interested to hear about the organized activities -- what you have seen that is truly imaginative or unique for the kids as opposed to the kids doing general (adult) activities like the Flo Riders or rock walls, etc. which are more multi-generational non-kid specific.

Is Disney the end all of kids cruising or is that just the reputation?

Do any of the cruise lines excel or are they all about the same and are there any others that are second choice for kids. (For example I saw someone commenting in another like about ClubHAL having limited hours and closing at times her kids wanted to go.)

    Thanks!

  4. If you are looking for a totally indulgent experience which cruise ships have the best suites?

I am not talking just about the larger cabins but instead the suites loaded with amenities, things like a private dining room or multiple bedrooms or a private hottub or ..... If you really want to splurge on an over the top suite what's the best choices?

I know Royal Caribbean has its Loft Suites but what else is out there for the person who really wants that unique experience?

  5. Looking for the BEST suites on cruise ships. I know they all have them but what are the really special ones?

I know Royal Caribbean had the Loft Suites which seem really extravagant ... what others are out there if you want that type of experience.

QM2 has some similar suites .... NCL has some very large suites ....

Love to hear about the best suites and any super unique suite amenities that come along with them.

    Thanks

  6. Is anyone sailing on a Disney cruise hopefully in the next few weeks and willing to do me a favor?

I am looking to get copies of menus and program (especially the children's stuff) off the ship and I asked Disney and they are not able to help. Hoping someone who is going on one of the cruises would be willing to snag me some copies and mail them off to me in the USA after their trip.

I will of course reimburse for postage.

  7. To SteveDan ...

I know your post was from awhile back but was wondering if you were still in touch with EEE's family? Is that his son who works as transportation director on several movies (could there possibly be TWO Everett Everett Everetts in this world?)

Not Steve but I can tell you that Everett S. Glixman aka Everett E. Everett had two sons Steven and Joseph and a daughter Francine. EEE only went to sea I think in the late 1960s before that he was with a group called The Nuts. He performed with Martha Rae, John Carroll, Lack LaRue, Sophie Tucker and Totie Fields plus he was a favorite of Della Reese. He worked at hotels in Massachusetts and I actually first met him at a hotel in Connecticut shortly before he shipped out.

    Happy Memories.

  9. Don't you suppose that the reason the turbines are intact is because the ship is so expensive to run that no one wants anything to do with them?

.... The survey found a hull with serious corrosion issues, virtually all the mechanical gear except the turbines and the main shell of the boilers missing, no furnishings and virtually no sign of the interior. The ship is a hulk. I suspect no amount of money can ever repair it enough to even assure that it would stay afloat for a while.

    Doc

I would question the comment about the hull because everything I have heard from NCL is that the hull is solid. There are above deck corrosion issues that need to be addressed but the hull is largely as thick as the day it was built. The designer way overspecified the steel intentionally and that meant every after almost 20 years of service the hull was in excellent shape. The NCL survey done a few years ago showed the underway portions to be still in excellent shape I understood.

Yes the interior was stripped to the metal with all of the partition walls other than the bulkheads and fire walls removed. That is both a blessing to someone who wants to built it out because there is nothing their way and they larely do not have to deal with ancient plumbing and electric but on the flipside all the people who took of restoration of the interiors are delusional for the same reasons because so much is gone.

Further it is my understanding that the engineering spaces while partially intact are all considered to be shot and could never be restarted for operations. Further no insurance company would ever insure the ship if they were to attempt to relight the original boilers after all these years. NCL's plans called for a new diesel power plant.

NCL's plans were as much as anything abandoned because the ship did not fit with their concept of 21st century cruising and all their efforts to build modern cruise ships. Not to mention NCL has had its financial problems even before the current economy and would much rather spend its money on the current fleet and the monstrosity they are building in France right now.

  10. The first time I was on the S.S. Constitution was Sep. of 1953. We were returning from 3 years in Bangkok, by way of Leharve.

Great stories only one problem ... the Constitution never sailed fro Le Harve. She always sailed the southern route from the Mediterranean and especially in 1953. You must have sailed out of southern France or Italy if you were on the Constitution.

  11. I have copies of the book that was done for the 10th anniversary of American Hawaii Cruises and their ships the Independence and Constitution is anyone is interested. It is a full 40 year history of these great American ships from their days on the Atlantic to the return to service in Hawaii with lots of photos.

I also have for sale copies of the books for the Legend of the Seas; Carnival Triumph; Volendam; Maasdam; Statendam and one of the 40th anniversary of NCL and the launch of the Norwegian Peal.

If you are interested contact me directly my email is sstraveler at aol dot com.

  12. Pullmantur sold the Oceanic at the beginning of March and she left Barcelona the middle of the month. The Oceanic becomes the Peace Boat in April making her first world cruise departing Japan in April for three months. She will be back in New York at the end of June for the first time since 1985! Long may she sail as the Peace Boat.

  13. Even though she is past 40 years old (real old for a cruise ship) the Oceanic has avoided the scrappers and was sold for yet another career. She left Barcelona a few days ago heading to Japan. She is going to become the new Peace Boat sailing around the world to promote peace and unity with students and young adults!

    It is great news!

  14. Many years ago now National Geographic did an article about the islands and had a picture of the Antilles' hulk in it. She was sitting on a reef with her back broken and by the time was picture was taken she was a rusty hulk. I am sure if you hunt you can find the issue of the magazine. I have not been in the area in years but I would suspect by know she is gone, but if you went there you might find something but not much.
