  1. Wife and I have only been on 4 NCL cruises, and find the MDR food and variety to be very good..

We also eat at the other free sites and Buffet and always find something to meet our taste...

We only hit the pay sites once or twice during our cruise..

The biggest problem we have, is trying to keep from gaining weight on our cruises, but what the heck, we are on vacation...

  2. I have a hard time understanding this DSC thing....

Look at it from my view... The Crew gets PAID, free room and board to go on these wonderful cruise ships and see the world..

I, on the other hand, have to PAY, in full, for the experience before boarding these ships, and they want big bucks for all the extras...

Gotta admit, when I joined the Navy, they did pay me big bucks to sail the seas and see the world.. Never got any DSC for my experience thou...

Their duty on a cruise ship cannot be any worse than those tin-cans they stuck me on..

We did have better entertainment when the Captain decided to roll a few depth charges and fire the big guns but the food was nothing to brag about..

  3. We only book last minute Inside Guarantee, up to Alaska..

Haven't had a bad cabin yet.. Have had some great deals on ships not sold out within a month of cruise.. Always got a room and we only use it to sleep and cleanup...

Being retired and living close to Seattle has a few benefits if one can have their suitcase ready to go during the Alaska cruise season and not worrying about airlines...

Last year we went with Princess because NO deals on NCL.. Ships are similar but prefer NCL for their entertainment and NO Formal Nights...

Gave my suits and ties to Goodwill when I retired......

  4. I will be looking for those nice price drops starting next month for a cruise to Alaska..

We can take advantage of last minute cruises when they need to fill the ship..

We don't really care where the cabin is located.. Maybe with all the problems that NCL has created lately, we will not have a problem getting a last minute deal...

We went with Princess last year, but prefer NCL for their entertainment on board and no formal nights..

  5. We only ate one meal at a specialty restaurant in the last 5 cruises, 4 with NCL and one with Princess..

Plenty of places to eat without paying extra for any meal...

The biggest problem I face, is trying to keep from gaining weight on these cruises... Haven't been able to keep the pounds off, but will give it a try again later this year...

I do exercise and rarely use the elevators, O'Well, it is our vacation and plenty of time to lose the weight before the next cruise..

  6. We prefer NCL... Went on Golden Princess cruise this year, but do not plan to return anytime soon...

Thought we would like the Princess cruise line, but Guess we just like the way NCL does their freestyle cruises...

We thought NCL entertainment is better... Food on both lines we fine, no problem there..

MDR's on Princess seems a little short on tables for two... Could be just our luck at that time... Sometimes we just prefer to eat alone... Not always thou..

We don't like traditional dining either...

We didn't care for the dress-up nights on Princess... No longer enjoy suits on vacations anymore...

The ships on both lines were nice, no problem there..

Have not sailed on any other cruise line...

  7. Since we live in the Northwest, found some great last minute cruises to Alaska.. Usually less than a month before the cruise..

We could also drive up a day before and stay overnight in motel, leave the car there, and they will take us to the port, which is cheaper than parking at the terminal and paying their fees..

Don't worry about the cabin, since we only sleep, cleanup there..

Plenty of places on the ship to view the nice scenery up there...

  8. We have taken 4 NCL cruises in the past.. This year, wife wanted to try another cruise line.. Went on Princess line up to Alaska..

From now on, we will cruise on NCL... We prefer our vacations the NCL way..

Better entertainment, and since we are on vacation, no longer enjoy wearing a tux or suit to dinner, which was twice on Princess cruise..

Since we don't like the Formal nights, we went to their buffet, but their pizza place was better, IMHO..

  9. Hi Monk... Thanks for your review.. Everyone will have a different experience, even on the same cruise..

I may not agree with everything you posted, but feel that was your experience based on YOUR trip..

I do think that Golden needs to improve their buffet..

I think that the pizza and Hamburgers stations were better than the buffet..

I do not like to wear a suit and tie during formal nights, so that's were we went even thou we do enjoy the Main Dining Room.. But not enough to join the formal nights..

I did see some without ties or suits, but didn't want to spoil the evening for those that like to dress up..

I did not try the crab shack...

Another thing my wife found out, is there is no free coffee or water at the IC.. Yep, she could have bought a coffee card.. Maybe she didn't ask the right person when she had a snack or dessert.. She does not care for gourmet coffee thou..

Also found out that if one post a negative review on this forum, some will find fault with it.. That was my experience too, even thou, for the most part, we enjoyed the ship and Alaska cruise...

  10. We just returned from a cruise on the Golden Princess out of Seattle to Alaska..

Have been on the Pearl and Jewell to Alaska too..

We liked both NCL and PCL ships and enjoy going to Alaska..

That said, we prefer NCL.. Like the dining options better, and entertainment was better, IMHO...

The NCL Buffet was set up better with different stations making it easier to get around.. Although we prefer the Main Dining Rooms, did not care for the Formal nights on the Golden.. The Smart Casual was fine.

When we vacation, we prefer to go Casual..

  11. We were on the Golden Princess on May 17th cruise...

We liked the ship and the cruise to Alaska..

I do not like to dress up in Formal wear anymore.. I did go to the buffet on those nights even thou we liked the main dining rooms, keeping with the recommendations that Princess posted..

Golden has three main dining rooms, would have been nice if one was OK to

use as smart casual during Formal nights... I will probably not cruise Princess again until they change, but don't think that will happen anytime soon..

  12. Last year, when we were on the Jewel, I was talking to man that said he

uses an agent that has a standby list of people for last minute cruise..

He said he lives in the Seattle area, and gets called a couple times a year...

This was for the Alaska cruises.. I would bet that they have the same type

of list for folks living in/near other cruise ports..

He did say that they called him a couple days before the cruise, and booked it... Said he has been on a dozen cruises up to Alaska.. His wife said that

they love cruising up there and I agree, as we have been 5 times and looking

    forward to going again...

  13. We just got off the Golden Princess cruise to Alaska..

The ship is nice and enjoyed the Alaska Cruise to Glacier Bay..

What our problem is, we do not like to dress up for dinner and Princess has two formal nights for their 7 day cruise.. Smart casual is fine but not tux or suits on my vacations...

Their horizon court, buffet, is not set up as nice as NCL Pearl.. the Golden also

set up the crab shack on their horizon court taking up seating away from the Buffet..

The entertainment on the NCL suits our taste better but Golden did have a good comedian and magic show..

Our next cruise, will be back on NCL....

  14. We gave up a long time ago on trying to get a table for two. Too much of a hassle. We now go the specialty restaurants of the Horizon Court. Candidly, we enjoy the service and the meal selection in the Horizon Court more so than the dining rooms.

We just got off the Golden Princess.. We ask for a table for two one evening at approx. 5:30 pm anytime dining... The wait person took us on a tour of the dining room before seating us.. The Head Waiter saw this and came over, but instead of apologize, he just said, he hope we enjoyed our little tour of the dining room.. I was NOT amused but said nothing..

AT other evenings, we usually sat with a table of 6..

I went on this cruise with Princess because wife wanted to try another cruise line, but wasn't sure of the two formal nights either as I do not like formal nights but understand others that do..

With others that must not like dressing up for evening meals, I don't see why one of the three main dining rooms could not accommodate at least one MDR

for smart casual.. Bye the way, the Horizon court loses some of the seating because of the crab shack going on during formal nights too..

The Golden Princes is a nice ship, but just feel that NCL freestyle cruising fits our vacation plans better, for us...

We had a problem leaving Ketchikan on time, and hit a little rough weather, causing us missing Victoria Port time, but I do not blame Princess for that..

That can happen on any cruise ship..

  15. On the Haverfield out of Guam, 1961, We were ordered to sea when a

202 MPH Typhoon came across the Island.. We ended up heading directly

into it.. Green waves came over the Mast.. Typhoon wiped out about

80% of building on the Island..

Scared, Hell ya.... The Haverfield was a Destroyer Escort..
