  1. In our balcony room on the Getaway, we had one outlet (so you could plug in 2 things). It's not in the bathroom.

When I said that there is a shaver outlet thing in the bathroom, this is what I was referring to: https://www.google.com/search?q=shaver+outlet&rlz=1C1CHWA_enUS524US527&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiXybbr3ZbMAhXLRyYKHSRsC4YQ_AUICCgD

    It's above the second shelf.

  2. I was worried about the outlet situation before my first cruise on the Getaway. There are 2 outlets.

Between 3 phones, 3 Nintendo DS things, 1 camera, 1 flat iron, and 1 curling iron, I probably only used 1 outlet. We never charged our phones (we disconnect completely on the ship, quite freeing really), I only use my flat iron to press my pants or dresses, I'm not curling my hair when I'm charging my camera battery, and my son survived without his game things until he got sick the last day at sea.

If you (or your spouse) needs a place to plug in a shaver, there's one of those funky looking outlet things (technical term) in the bathroom.

  3. Wow! Thank you all for the information! It is very much appreciated. Sorry it has taken so long to respond, just got off a ship (not cargo, traditional cruise ship) yesterday so I am still trying to come to terms with the reality of life on land (no room steward and now I have to cook).

The pictures are fantastic and I will have to read the link - I glanced at it briefly during the multiple restroom breaks along the way to Miami. With 5 people in the car, there were quite a few!

  4. Yes, I know, I'm weird. Major childhood issues regarding being forgotten about at an airport that I can't seem to shake.

I always joked about traveling to Europe via cargo ship and never looked into it to see if it was a real thing or not. I must say, I am thrilled that it is!!

Roughing it on a ship is not something I'm afraid of. My uncle was a large vessel tugboat captain and I have seen his "luxurious accommodations" so I know what to expect there... this would be just a means to get from one part of the globe to the other without being drugged in order to be tossed onto a plane.

    I have a few questions:

How much do fares normally run out of any port on the Eastern seaboard to Europe?

Is it per person or per stateroom?

How many other passengers are usually aboard the ship (if any at all)

Ever come across any issues while traveling on a cargo ship?

Would my 10 yr old son lose his mind? (I think I know the answer to this)

Am I dreaming? I can really travel the world without flying??!?

  5. Shampoo and conditioner are provided. Not those small bottles - the s&c will be in a dispenser in the shower.

There is a hair dryer in the room. I have very long hair and it was powerful enough to dry my hair in no time.

I don't remember seeing soap and body wash though.

  6. Seemed like there was something going on everyday.

    1 embarkation: Prime rib

    2 sea day: Steak & seafood/chicken & waffles

3 sea day: All you can eat spare ribs

    4 St. Thomas: Prime rib

    5 Tortola: Chicken & waffles

6 sea day: All you can eat spare ribs

    7 Nassau: Prime rib

If I can provide more info on each please let me know. I'll be happy to if you are interested. :)

  7. Only have to wear a wristband if they are registered with the Splash Academy. Cannot take it off, it's like a hospital wristband. My son was NOT pleased that I didn't pack scissors to cut it off once we got in the car. Your child's wristband will have their muster station printed on it.

As for the muster drill: no life jacket and show up at your station. The longer it takes you to get there, the longer it will be. Plan on heading to your station around 3:30 pm. Our station was one of the MDRs. It was not too bad considering that we were able to sit at the tables to watch the guy show us how to put on a life jacket and use the flashlight... :D

  8. Loved the atmosphere of the Tropicana. Ask for Gustav. He's the best and has quite the following! He took care of my son and his food allergies! He brought my son all of the French baguettes that he wanted! His asst is a sweetheart too. Even asked me to dance while I waited for my husband to return from the Splash Academy. Unfortunately, I had to decline due to my 2 backwards left feet! LOL

In Tortola, book the catamaran sand and snorkel excursion to Norman Island. If you book the morning one, you will get more time. It is so worth it! You get to go to the Blight and the Caves.

Went on the St. John snorkel excursion. Loved every second of it! Couldn't ask for a better trip!

Went to one of the MDRs (Savor or Taste, can't remember which) for lunch on embarkation day. We were one of 5 tables in there.

I agree with going to the Flamingo for breakfast. You can get in and out and have a window seat!

Personally, I didn't need a power strip - I brought one and never touched it. You'll have 2 outlets. We never used both at the same time. Turned the phones off once on the ship and only needed to charge the camera a few times. You cannot bring a blow dryer as it may trip the fuse and there's one in your stateroom that worked fine on my naturally crazy hair. I brought my flat iron, but not for my hair. I used it to press a few things that were wrinkled in transit. 400 deg for cotton, 300 deg or lower for synthetics ;)

  9. I need a little help. We just got off of the Getaway on Saturday.

My husband's work phone is on the ship! NCL told us that they will not know if it's there for a week or two.

I know it's impossible to mail it back to us now and I would never ask that of anyone on vacation, but if anyone doesn't mind asking guest relations to ask our room steward if she found his phone, that would be greatly appreciated!! NCL can ship it back next Saturday if it's found.

We were in 10854 and our room steward was Marcela. If you have her, you will not be disappointed! She's so sweet!

Personally, I'd rather be on the ship instead of my husband's phone.

  10. Your sofa will be next to the balcony and your bed will be in the middle of the stateroom.

The bed is where the recessed part is in the wall. It should not be next to the door, the closet door, yes, cabin door, no.

We just got off the Getaway and found the deck plan for our stateroom to be spot on.

Hidden spots? For you or for storage? For you, you can hide in the closet. There's enough room! Depends on what or who you are hiding from LOL

  11. [quote name='gluecksbaer']Please remember to update me with how it goes on your trip!

Day 1: Embarkation day! We arrived onboard and spoke with Guest Services. They told us that our acct was notated regarding my son's allergy and to speak with the Maitre d'. We headed to one of the MDRs for lunch. Spoke with the Maitre d' and she assured us that there would not be a problem prepping my son's meals and that we would just need to place my son's order for dinner the day (or night) before.

At dinner, we did just that. The waiter brought us a menu for the following night and we placed my son's order.

Remember in Annie when the seamstress asked Annie if blue was her color and then said, "No, red, I think" - well it was pretty similar on NCL! He got everything he wanted! My son ordered off the menu every night for his 1st course. He loves apples, especially red apples. One day, one of the MDRs did not have a red apple and they asked if green was ok. When the waiter returned, he had a sliced red apple. He said he sent his asst waiter to the Garden Cafe for a red apple. I thought that was very thoughtful and showed that even the smallest passengers are just as important.

By day 3 everyone in all 3 MDRs knew my son's name and he was obviously their favorite!

They even had GF waffles (my son is not GF, but the GF waffles do not have dairy or soy). He never had an issue and never went without something he wanted. He was very happy and probably ate his weight in fish and chips.

We'll be planning our next cruise with NCL very soon! They are the best with accommodating food allergies!

side note: the splash academy was his absolute favorite part of the whole cruise!
  12. I'll know first hand next week. Sailing out on Saturday. My son is intolerant to dairy and soy. He prefers the taste of coconut milk over almond. Some boats have Daiya cheese on board, but I am not sure if that is by request only. I filled out the form, notated that daiya cheese and coconut milk are his favorites, faxed it back, and will meet with the Group Services Coordinator upon boarding to discuss meals.

We were going to bring some "safe" snacks onboard, but opted to avoid the hassle of getting clearance for it. Not sure if there's much of a hassle, but I made it into a big deal so my husband would just drop the issue. :D Per the email from access desk: Please be advised that guests are not allowed to bring any foods onboard. They can only bring dried, ready to eat, non-perishable items and they must provide with a list of brands so we can obtain clearance.

Since your children drink coconut milk, they should try this: http://stevesicecream.com/

Options are so limited when you can't have dairy or soy. We buy it probably a little too much from our local grocery store. The burnt sugar is my son's favorite and the coffee one is mine! I wish they had this on the ship.

  13. Understand your point because I used to be petrified of having the kids in a different room, but at this point, we have sailed several times with the kids. We always get adjoining balconies and leave the door b/t the rooms opened. There is a safety latch on the sliding doors that my younger ones can't get to.

Good to know! I had no idea. I still vote for the suite bc of privacy.
