  1. We felt totally spoilt when we went QG on the QE two years ago! Lovely stateroom. So nice to have the coffee machine and drinks etc.Separate but connecting door from toilet area to the shower and tub. Loads of wardrobe space. Sofa, armchairs and coffee table area. Big balcony. I had no idea why I’d need a butler. Who knew! He was so helpful! Nice restaurant and lounge. Plenty of room on the sun deck. Well even my husband was impressed so fingers crossed that we make it to our next cruise in QG on the QV in May! Go for it! Lol! Whatever you decide - have a great trip!

  2. Just wondered if anyone else had a problem getting on to the new improved manage your booking site. Had an email about it inviting me to sign in and see all the improvements. On clicking the link and putting in the required details I get a notice saying they don’t recognise my details. I was only on the old site a month ago updating the passport details and it worked perfectly. Hoping it’s their bad.

  3. Just logged in to my voyage planner for a new booking and was surprised to find Cunard U.K. customers now have drink package options! When did that happen? Too late for us now as we no longer drink enough alcohol to make it worthwhile! LOL! We shall just get a wine package onboard as usual and pay for the odd stiffener at the end.

This is our first river cruise and we leave Saturday 7/20 from Nuremberg to Budapest (romantic danube) on Viking.  We did get an alert email from Viking one week out  that ship swaps may occur.  I am okay with that (if time is limited on a bus) but I am nervous about the trip turning into a bus tour or being on a bus for hours.  I do have trip insurance and can get 75% of my money back if I cancel or the trip is interrupted.  Hopefully Viking gives us options to back out if it were to turn into a bus tour.  Has anyone sailed recently or been in a similar predicament that you can give me some reassurance? At this point it seems like we will have to fly out there and see.

We flew back from Budapest on the 14th July at the end of our Uniworld Passau to Budapest cruise. The river levels were great and the weather was perfect for us. Temps remain in the low 20s and there was some cloud cover. The previous week they’d really suffered in the heat.

From Passau to Budapest, Danube water levels are currently normal, for the next week great weather is predicted around 27°C (except for thunder storms on Sunday - are you bringing it with you?).

Locks will not be a problem.

If do get ill then the Bush Flying Doctor will take good care of you.

    Have a great cruise.

Lmao! Thanks for the kind wishes! I’m sure I’ll have a great time! I’ll let you know. We’ve sailed the Rhine and Rhône with Riviera and the Dutch waterways with Emerald. This will be our first trip with Uniworld. Friends have recommended them so we’ll give them a whirl!

  6. Many thanks for all the updates notamermaid! We are supposed to be sailing from Passau to Budapest on Sunday. No idea that I should be worried about damaged lock gates! I thought the water level might be a problem or one of us falling ill or injuring ourselves leading to having to cancel our trip. Just shows there’s no point worrying at all! What will be will be. Oh well fingers crossed! Lol!

I had a birthday in the Britannia restaurant on the QM2 about 5 or 6 years ago and was given a cake then as well, but not as big as this one!! Lol.

  8. Ok. At the risk of being contentious...... just back from a week aboard the QE in a Q6 cabin. We had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. The food was on the whole very good but we’ve travelled Britannia cabin before and dare I say it found the fare very similar! Yes in the Grills you may be able to choose what you have on which night or ask for a particular favourite in advance but as we were onboard for only a week that didn’t really worry us. However, we did use the option of having lunch off the menu in our cabin occasionally when we just couldn’t be bothered to trek up to the restaurant. Lovely time though! Lol!

  9. I lived for 10 years in the Middle East. Not so sniffy about choices. Hate saccharine but now Type 1 so no choice. Before diabetes any tonic that didn’t have blessed sweetener. Now it hardly matters. Need a hefty whack of gin, ice if gin and mixer not chilled, lemon or lime, zest if possible! Go Grills - take your own choice of mixer! That’s what we just did. Fabulous!

  10. Reminds me of the Dorothy Parker line (although some dispute its origin):

“I like to have a Martini,
Two at the very most.

After three I’m under the table,
After four I’m under my host.”

  11. Same thing happened to us a few years ago. Having dinner when my better half nite that we’d turned back to NY. Captain Wells came on to say we had a very poorly pax who needed hospitalisation. Back under the bridge we went, coastguard came out from NJ in a boat and picked up the poor fellow! Back under the bridge we went! I still think about him now and hope it turned out ok for him.

  12. On the question of boarding times.. We are completeing 3 back to back cruises with the 2 changes at Southampton. Do we have to stay around the termial or can we go into Southampton for a few hours

I would think you would have the time to visit Southampton. You’ll be changing berth and quite likely terminals. I think they take care of your luggage but you’ll probably have to check in again.

  13. Just looked at our etickets for our cruise in and out of Southampton. No flying. No coach. It says no bag to weigh more than 20kg! Guess the porters are getting weaker!

  14. Since it’s not a formal night, it’s not a problem. I’m ready to go apart from changing into a skirt. We always pass under the bridge and still make first sitting easily. First time we were in the middle of dinner when my husband said we’d turned around - then came the Captain’s announcement to say some poor soul was so ill we were heading back to rendezvous with the Jersey coastguard. We’d finished eating and were back up top to view proceedings. That evening we passed under the bridge 3 times. Later that night the Captain let us know that all had gone well and that the sick pax was doing well. I still think about him now. Certainly high drama he could’ve done without!

  15. Hi everybody, My wife and I shall be aboard for the west bound transatlantic crossing in a couple of days time, this will be our first ever cruise, and will be celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary during the crossing. I spent 12 years in the RN spending most of my time at sea, but although I have travelled most of the world from the Caribbean to the Solomon Isles I have never been to the USA. I read somewhere that currency on board is Pounds Sterling, but I see all the menus are priced in Dollars????? maybe I'm too cynical but this just seems like a ploy to get you not to know how much you are spending, is this general?

Definitely in US $ onboard. We always use a Santander Zero card onboard. No commission and excellent exchange rate. I believe there are other cards that are similar. I take $ cash for extra tipping.

  16. Evening all,

This is my first post to this excellent forum. My wife and I have never cruised but I love ships (and most forms of transport to be fair!), so when she asked me what I wanted to do for my 50th I said a cruise. I started looking around but have always loved the idea of a Transatlantic crossing, so when I looked at the QM2 schedules and saw that this October it arrives in NYC on the 25th, there was no question as that's my 50th. I can't think of a better way of celebrating it than sailing into NYC on this amazing ship!! (I know it's amazing, as although we haven't sailed on her, we did the "ship visit" last November and were truly blown away by it's splendour. We just can't wait).

We booked this trip almost 2 years in advance, so now I'm getting into serious planning mode as it's now less than 6 months away. (Yes I know that means I'm going to be 50 but it's just a number isn't it?) :D

I'm really just saying hello at the moment, but as the weeks pass I'll probably be asking a few questions.

Something we didn't realise or know about when we booked is that the National Symphony Orchestra are on this trip, so that's a nice bonus! (I'm not exactly into classical music but appreciate it and having seen the Last Night of the Proms on TV I'm quite looking forward to that. Also, although I'm a jeans and t-shirt type of chap, I'm actually looking forward to dressing up and have already bought my dinner suit and a few other bits and pieces more appropriate to my (upcoming) age!!

My BIL and his wife are joining us too - I mentioned it to him when we booked it as I know he is interested in the Titanic and stuff like that, so he jumped at the chance to do this. Our two teenage boys are flying out to meet us in NYC when we arrive (they didn't fancy 7 days at sea/limited internet/gaming!), we'll then spend a few days in NYC and Washington together before (sadly) flying home.

Oh and I'm already planning another cruise next year as I'm convinced my wife will love this trip, and I KNOW I will, so looking at a 7 day Fjords cruise around May/June next year. After the ship visit, I'd love to try the other Queens too.

Anyway, sorry for such a long "hello" post, and thank you all for the brilliant information on here :)

    Phil & Vicky

A man of obvious discernment! Love how your throwing yourself into this and know you’ll all have a wonderful time!
