Valor 3-13-05 Review

Eastern

My review will not be so much a personal account of our trip, but more informational. I don’t want this review to be boring like you were reading my journal but however, information that will help you in planning and preparing for your cruise.

Embarkation:

We wish we would have arrived earlier but we got delayed. Our plan was to arrive by 10:45, but we arrived at the port around 11:30 and the lines were long.

We had several people on different charge cards so we had to fill out separate sail and sign forms. They pass out extras right before you enter the carry on bag check area. You also can make a copy of the sail and sign page from your documents packet and fill it out. However, since we didn’t do this I’m not sure if they will accept that.

You will see a sign saying “Fun Pass”. The line was very long by the time we got there. Once at the desk all passengers that your documents are tied to must be present. They will all need to have their ID out at that time. You will also turn in your Nassau customs page that comes in your documents. I will say that this is a mess. They are lackadaisical in this area. The customs officer took all of ours but one (just left it in our blue packet. The customs person checking in our friends didn’t take any of theirs. No one ever asked for them again. After going through customs you will be directed to a table with Carnival representatives and you will pick up your sail and sign cards. Only one person needs to get in this line. Your sail and sign card will show your dining room and dinner time. It is also the key to your room. At this point you will directed to the area that will take your picture for your sail and sign card. You will give them your card and they will slide your card into a machine. You will be asked to take off your hats and glasses. They will take your picture. Your picture is not now on your sail and sign card but is logged into the data base. Every time you leave or enter the ship you will slide your card into a machine and your picture will pop up on their computer screen to ID you. The last step before boarding the ship was your picture taken by Carnival to purchase later if you choose. The whole process was completed by 12:30, only one hour to board!

Extra Keys

If you are traveling with just your children they will allow the parents to book in a separate room from the kids. Because we had a niece with us…not just our own children…we had to book an adult in each room. My husband’s key was to one room and mine to the other. We stopped by the information desk on our way in. We asked if each of us could have a key to the other room and it was no problem. They gave us a key that said Mr. Key Only. It was not tied to the sail and sign card but simply to open the other door.

Lido Deck After Boarding

You will board the ship at the lobby area. It is so beautiful. You will be asked to go to the Lido deck for lunch and drinks. The pools and hot tubs were up and running and the Lido deck was hopping. After a few drinks and lunch we headed down to the room.

Cabins:

We had an inside cabin for two and inside cabin for 4. Our friends were across the hall with an outside cabin for 3.

The inside cabin for two is set up as two twin beds, but the room steward was happy to move them together. The quad is set up with two twin beds and bunk beds that fold up into the ceiling. Our steward left the girls down so they could nap during the day. Our suitcases fit under the beds with no problem. There was a duvet that covered the bedspread/blanket which was really nice. That way you know it is clean and you are not lying on a bedspread that has not been washed. The outside cabin for 3 was very spacious. It also had two twin beds and a couch which was made up into a bed.

Safe:

We brought our casino cards with a magnetic strip to use to open and close the safe. We hid the card so that it was available for anyone that needed to get into the safe. When you get there your safe should be left open unlocked. Ours was open but the dead bolt lock was out as if locked. We called “8000” on the phone and someone came to unlock it for us so we could close it and set the safe. To set the safe you close it (one tip here: you must push on the door of the safe to keep it closed while locking it, otherwise it will not lock) then slide your magnetic stripped card through the slot and it will lock. To unlock you slide the magnetic strip card through the slot and it will unlock. It is soooo simple. We kept all our documents, ID, camera, video camera in it with plenty of room to spare.

Closets, Shelf Space and Outlets

There is so much cabinet and shelf space. There were three closets. Two had hanging and one was ceiling to floor shelves. We brought extra hangers, although there are some provided. By the desk there were, I believe, four drawers, however you can’t use the top one for anything other then some pens or little things. There is a bible and a blow dryer in the first drawer. To use the blow dryer you have to hold the button down while blow drying, I just used mine it was much easier. There is only one outlet in the cabin It is located by the desk.. Bring a power cord with a few outlets. We kept our cell phones charged and I could blow dry my hair and have my curling iron all plugged in at the same time.

Wake Up Call:

You can set the phone for a wake up call but we usually just used the alarm on our cell phones. It worked out great that way.

Light on the Inside:

There is a vent in the door and there was actually enough light to see to get to the bathroom at night. The other option is to leave the bathroom light on and close the door. I didn’t see a need for a night light.

Bathroom:

In the bathroom you will find multiple shelves and plenty of space for toiletries etc. The shower was wonderful! On the back wall of the shower you will see a little round silver thing that looks like a bell. It is a clothesline. You can pull the knob and a string will come across the shower and there is a place on the opposite wall that you can hook it into. This is perfect for wet swimsuits. If you want to take a shower just simply unhook one end of the clothesline. There are hooks on the back of the door and we just hooked the line over the hooks on the door so that we did not have to take off the swimsuits. (don’t forget to bring clothespins). There is a bowl of sample toiletries, there was a razor, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.

Over the Door Shoe Hangy Thing:

I could not live without this. It was so nice to find little things at a glance. We kept our books, cards, scissors, tape, post it notes sunscreen, extra sunglasses, fanny packs, etc in it. Much better than digging through drawers trying to find things. We hung ours on the closet door closest to the cabin door. There is a little more inside room on that particular door.

Muster Drill

You will find your life jackets for the muster drill on the shelf in the first closet. Our muster drill was at 4:00. It will tell you on your life jacket where your station is. On the back of your cabin door you will find a map directing you to your station. It took about 15 minutes. We went back to our room dropped off our life jackets and went to the Lido deck for the sail away.

Lincoln Dining Room:

Our dining time was 6:15. We had a table for nine in the Lincoln Dining Room. It is a beautiful dining room. The first night we wore our shorts to dinner, which is completely acceptable as we had not received or unpacked all of our baggage. If I were you I would just wear what ever you wore on to the ship. Most everyone was dressed very casual. The dining room is separated into teams. There is a red, white, and blue team. This is decided based according to your table number. Throughout the cruise your team will earn points based on participation in activities.

Food

The food was very good. All the basic Carnival menu. Lobster, salmon, steak, pasta dishes, salad, soups etc. You will not go hungry for sure. You can order as many of any item that you want. I always go for two lobsters. The escargot is fabulous. That was my favorite appetizer. If you don’t see anything that appeals to you they will always cook a steak for you. My daughter is very picky so she had pizza or hot dogs every night. They were very accommodating and never minded going the extra mile. Our bat waitress was wonderful and very quick with service. The Maitre D was the most involved that I have seen on any Carnival cruise. He was a lot of fun.

Rosie’s Diner (buffet)

Food was always good and hot. We enjoyed breakfast there every morning but one. The dining room was also nice for breakfast. For breakfast and lunch in the dining room, you are seated at any open table not the table that you sit at for dinner.

Grille/Pizza and Midnight Buffet

The pizza and cheese burgers were great. That was always our midnight snack as there really isn’t much of a midnight buffet anymore. At least not like they used to do. There is a spread of desserts and on that same table a few pasta dishes. Pizza and Grille are open for the midnight buffet. I must say I can see why they don’t make them so extravagant any more. I’m sure it was not cost effective as there was probably a lot of wasted food. Quite frankly I think most people prefer the burger and pizza.

The Gala Buffet was beautiful, but again a lot of really strange pasta dishes and pate’s. The desserts were wonderful!

I wish Carnival would offer more traditional salads and compliments at the midnight buffet.

We never had a chance to eat at the deli, fish and chips, or oriental, but there was always a line for the oriental and the deli.

Tux Rental

My husband always rents a tux because it saves on packing. This can be ordered over the phone with Carnival prior to your cruise. Simply go to a tux shop in your area and get measured. Call Carnival customer service and they will connect you to the appropriate department. I believe gifts and services. After you board, check in your Capers to see what time the Formalities shop opens. Our order was perfect; however there were a few people in line that were missing various items. Be sure to check as soon as you pick it up. That way they will still be open to fix any problems. The line on the first formal night is long!

Fun Vision:

This is a great way to check your sail and sign account. We always opt out of the port talks and debarkation talk given by the cruise director. These are all on the TV in your room. I just catch up on things while I got dressed for dinner or after I came in for the evening.

Entertainment

The Vegas style show was fabulous with the dancers and music. The first comedian was awful. People were walking out on him particularly when he made a joke about the Tsunami. People were appalled that he would make a joke over this tragedy. Everyone was talking about it all over the ship, this is just not my opinion, and it was the talk of the evening throughout the ship. I doubt that he will be back. The hypnotist was fabulous and we enjoyed that show tremendously. The 70 and 80’s show was also wonderful. The break dancers received a standing ovation in the middle of the show. We did not make it to the last show which was I believe like the American Idle or talent show, not sure.

With the exception of the first comedian, the entertainment was phenomenal.

Pub Crawl: We were disappointed in the pub crawl. There is much room for improvement in this ********. It was clear that this was strictly a moneymaker to see how many shots they could sell. We were even told that one of the other ships sold X number of shots last week and we need to beat that. Granted, a pub crawl exist around shots and I’m all for that. We went from bar to bar and bought shots for half price. You were given a card and for every four shots you bought (at one time) you got initials of one of the crew members on your card. Whoever had the most initials on their card by the end of the night would win. I’m not even sure what you would win. Something about a gift box with items from the shops on board. We combined our sheets into one and still didn’t come close to winning.

It started in the Eagles lounge. It was very disorganized even trying to get your shots at the bar. They had us swap our left and right shoe and find a casino chip to earn initials.

In the Winston Bar they had the guys switch shirts with a girl and you got initials for that. That was darned funny, but that was about the only time I really giggled the whole time.

In the bar by the casino they separated the girls and guys and each group sang the guys and girls parts to the song “Summer Nights” from Grease. Of course the men didn’t know the song and the girls did. All the girls got initials.

The night ended in the disco where we bought more shots and turned in our cards.

How can this be improved:

In my opinion they could make this so much more fun. Here would be my suggestions.

This should start and end out on the Lido deck. The piano bar is too small to get things started. You could barely get through to sign up. The disco was a bad place to end. To disorganized.

Skip the whole “initial” thing and have teams participate in activities based on their team color established in the dining room.

Serve ½ price shots and do group games. Set us up in our red, white, and blue teams that were established in the dining room the first night. Give points to those teams for participation, etc. They could keep track of which team buys the most shots and give points for that. That would give Carnival the shot sales that they are looking for. Do things that enable people to get to know each other. There are so many adult party games that are done in lines that could be done. This needs to take more time. Spend more time in the bars and more time on activities. There was plenty of interest in this

Blackjack Tournament:

The cost is $20 per seven hands. That was a great time. We joined both that were offered. It was worth the $20 in my opinion. The first time I lost and the second time I went to the finals! I was the third one out but still had a great time. You will play seven hands. They give you $1000 dollars in fake chips to start with. At the end of the seven hands they will count your chips. There is a leader board and the top scores are posted throughout the day. People get knocked off the board as someone finishes with more chips.

Topless Deck

It is difficult to find deck chairs. We found that the topless deck was a prime spot for a number of reasons. You are not expected to go topless on the topless deck. There were only a couple out of probably 40 people. This is a perfect spot for viewing the stage and activities by the pool. If you go to the rail you can see everything! You can hear the live music because it is on the deck below. It was easy for our group to meet up because the topless deck is a small area. If we were going to sunbathe, that is where we went. We always knew to look there for the people in our group.

Art Auction:

We did purchase a piece of art. This was a lot of fun and I’m not an art auction kind of person. Loved the free champagne. There was a mix-up and they sold our art to someone else but they are making it right by sending another one of the exact same picture, shipping free of charge and an extra piece of art. Things happen and the important thing is they made it right.

Bingo:

We played bingo twice. You can buy one card for $10 or three for $20. If you buy the page with three you can not tear them and share them. They have to remain as one page. Also, do not tear off any of the numbers. You simply punch and fold…do not tear, or your cards will be no good. They play several games on one card.

Bar Service:

Bar service was great. We even asked for a bar waiter to come up to the topless deck…surprise, surprise,….he was more than happy to obliged. LOL

Lido Wait Staff

Wait staff needed to pay more attention to clearing and cleaning tables. Particularly in the evening on the Lido deck when there were parties.

Excursions:

We opted out of the whole excursion scene. We have done so many excursion in the past that this time we opted just to take it easy.

Nassau:

We took a cab to Atlantis. Cost was $5 per person. It was about a five minute cab ride. We paid $29 and did a tour of the dig and the grounds. For the $29 you will see all the aquariums and the Dig. You also are allowed to walk among the grounds freely. They will give you a wrist band showing that you paid to be on the grounds. You are not allowed to use the beach, pools or slides. No water activities. They will ask you if you want the guided tour or to go on your own. We chose the guided tour and are glad we did. We learned a lot about the property and the aquariums that we wouldn’t have known without having the guide. It was worth the $29 in our opinion. Atlantis is beautiful but I can’t say that I would spend the money to go there for a week. I think it would get old very fast. JMHO.

We sat down and had some drinks. The dinking age in Nassau is 18.

St. Thomas:

We went to Coki beach. The cab ride was I believe $7 a person. It is such a great beach. Calm waters and lots of fish to see. We rented our snorkel, mask, and fins there for $10 a set. We rented two and shared. We also rented an umbrella for $10 and it was well worth the money although a little expensive.

I take double sheets to lay out on. They are so much nicer than towels and much cooler. The sand shakes right out of them. They fold up small and fit in the back pack easily.

They have the best frozen lemonade there. Add a little vodkas and they are even better

My daughter got her hair braided… just the top half braids for $2 a braid.

There are a lot of people selling things on the beach, massages, jewelry, sarongs, clothing, etc. They didn’t heckle you really, just said no if we weren’t interested. Several women in our party bought jewelry from this one lady. Her items were very unique and not cheap. Say $40 for a necklace and bracelet. There were many natives selling jewelry but they were all the same old thing. She had beautiful pieces and very unique. Worth the money we felt. I will describe what she looked like: she was a white women, tall, long blonde hair, she was dressed in beach wear bikini thong with a sorong.

We then went to Sapphire Beach. I think it was a $5 cab ride. OK ….a few important things to know about this beach. It is beautiful. But, you can not swim here very easily. Although there were a few people in the water, none of our kids or adults wanted to get in. The sand by the water is very pebbly and rocky. It is hard on the feet. The kids checked into parasailing but they wanted $55 a person so they opted to wait for our next port St. Maarten. If oyu just want to lay out and enjoy the beauty it is a great place. No peddlers anywhere to be seen. We did not stay here long and headed back to the ship.

St. Maarten:

This was the best day of all the port days. We had a cab take us to the shopping area just about 5 minutes drive away. We only shopped for about 30 minute. Just long enough for the kids to get some souvenirs for their friends at home. We aren’t shoppers!

Off we went to Orient Beach. It was fabulous. Our cabbie dropped us off at this place (I’m sure one of his friends) where we got an umbrella, 2 chairs and 2 drinks for $12. That was a great deal. The beach has the most beautiful powdery sand. The kids parasailed as a couple (two on the same parasail) for $90…$45 each. For 12 more dollars they take pictures of them. They gave them the roll of film. I believe there are 12 pictures. Keep in mind that this is a clothing optional beach. The people who were taking part in the clothing optional option was mainly topless women, however we did see one man nekkid where most people are clothed. The majority are in full swimsuits and bikinis. Now, if you walk down to the end of the beach off to the right there is a nudist colony there. And just about everyone is naked down there. Of course there are the sight seer’s, people watchers, like us who take a stroll just for the laughs. Let me warn you it is mainly middle aged people and very few body beautiful’s LOL

It was an awesome day!

Debarkation:

OK Here is how it works!

There are three ways to exit the ship.

The first is by carrying all your own luggage off the ship and handicapped people needing extra assistance. If you do not plan on caring your luggage off the ship yourself it must be packed and set outside your door by midnight on Saturday.

The next group to go are the tours and early flight people.

The last group to go is an “all call”. They ask that if you do not have to make tight flight times, that you please wait and let others off first. That is what we did.

Now the only debarkation problem for us was that the escalator going down after leaving the ship was broke. All of those people who were carrying off their own luggage had to go down a non moving escalator all the while carrying their luggage. Get the picture. It was a mess and caused a lot of delay. But you know this is no one’s fault… “stuff” happens. I recommend not booking your flight before 2:00 in the afternoon for this reason.

Elevators:

This is a little tricky because all the elevators don’t go to all the floors. The forward elevators go all the way to deck 12. The spa is on deck 11 forward and Camp Carnival is forward deck 12. If you take these elevators for these places you will not need to do stairs.

Arcade:

The arcade is called the Caboose, however I can’t tell you anything about it. LOL

Water:

We have never had this problem before on a Carnival ship, but the water on the Lido deck tasted musty. We all noticed this. If you plan on having dinner with your meal I would get it from one of the bars or carry a water bottle. The main dining room water was great!

Ping Pong:

The ping pong tables are hard to find. They are located on the outer deck by Camp Carnival which is deck 12. There are two of them. You can go to the information desk, give them $10 and they will give you two paddles and two balls. When you return them you get the $10 deposit back.

Shuffle Board

Shuffle board is located on the sports deck.

Golf:

There is a golf pro on board. You can take a lesson which includes video for $45 for a half an hour. There was a free swing class, and also a putting contest.

Cleanliness:

The ship was very clean, the floors were always kept spotless and restrooms were well attended to.

Tipping:

We were a family of five:

We left our tips on our sail and sign card. We did tip extra to the following service people.

Maitre’ D: $10

The Head Waiter: $30

Assistant Waitress: $20

Room Steward $20….Note: He did a good job, pretty much what we expected. But because he had to clean the room where 4 teenage girls were staying, moved our beds together to make a king, brought extra ice, and answered the two pages instantly when we called, we tipped him extra.

Paging Your Room Steward:

To page your room steward you press the housekeeping button on your phone, let it ring, and then hang up. The steward will call you back.

Massage Chairs:

Massage chairs are located on the promenade deck by The Java (place to by special coffees, shakes and desserts). You put in money for certain amounts of time.

A Quiet Place on the Ship:

Go to deck three. Go to the information desk. You will see doors right there that go outside. There are comfy padded lounge chairs always available. I had the best nap ever out there. You can hear the ocean waves hitting against the ship. It is so quiet and very few people around. It was the best!

Well I can’t really think of anything else, but if I do I will come back here and add it.

I hope you enjoy the review, and find it helpful in your planning.

Patti- Great review! What deck were your cabins on? Any trouble w/ sleeping due to noise from above?

We were with the river rats on the Riviera deck LOL. We actually loved it because there was no chance for noise above or below us. We were mid ship. 1373 and 1377.

We weren't so lucky on the Conquest Upper Deck. Good thing we didn't go to bed early on that ship becasue we could hear the disco and it wasn't even below us.

your review was very thorough and helpful. thanks also for the tips on the ship in general and the destinations. i really hadn't thought of heading up to the "topless deck" to sunbathe, but it sounds like a good idea. I think I remember reading that you have to go to the sports deck and go through the basketball courts or something to get there?

less than 2 months and I'm THERE! :D thanks again.

We were at the Orient beach. Keep in mind that any beaches on the french side are clothing optional. My kids are older and it didn't seem to bother them any. Pretty much just a few topless around unless you wondered down to the nudist colony end. I don't know anything about Bikini beach.

Patti, another question! Would you say that it is better to go thru the Fun Pass line (We have them filled out) or does it not matter??

Also, about what time would you be out looking for Pool chairs?? I am usually an early riser on Sea Days, like to be by the pool around 8:00am...Are all the chairs really gone by then?? Who is getting these chairs, if everyone says they are already taken??? Actually the topless deck sounds good to most of our group, but we have kids..hmmmmm Thanks again!

Good question...I thought about getting into the really short line however if you have the fun pass filled out I'm not sure they would let you check in through that line. I also knew nothing about it. They may make you jump through a lot of hoops since it is for non registered people. Sure worth asking before you get in the fun pass line. Although the line was really long it moved at an OK pace. We were through the line in probably 20 minutes.

As for deck chairs we were slow movers in the morning and would not be poolside until around 9:30. So I'm not sure how early people start saving them. Very early I hear. I really wish Carnival could find a way to get this under control, however, I can see what they are up against. They can't really remove towels or personal items because someone may just be gone to the bathroom or back to the room for something. It's tough to know how to make this situation better.

I vote for Camp Carnival and head to the topless deck LOL:D

Thanks for the review we leave in 58 days!

How was getting off the ship in St. Thomas I have heard it takes awhile if you don't go early?

How long was the tour of Atlantis?

Thanks

If my memory serves me right, we were off the ship around 10:00. It wasn't too bad. The line moves really, really, fast. Make sure you are in the correct line. the Capers will tell you which lounge to go to. US went to I bleieve the Eagles lounge and all other countires went to the Ivanhoe Theatre.

The actual tour of Atlantis took a little over an hour and then you were free to roam as long as you wantd to.

I forgot to add that on this particular cruise you stay on ships time. After you board the Valor and set your watch to ship time it never changes after that. Don't forget this when you are in port becasue port times are different from ship time. Always stay on ship time!

Patti, we have been to Orient Beach before, each bar/umbrella rental is called a beach...Before we sat in front of Kontiki Beach, was looking at sitting at the Bikini Beach this time...I was just wondering if you recall the name of the place you sat infront of? It seems like a better deal then what we payed before...I think we payed 20.00 for 2 chairs and 1 umbrella, no drinks were included! Maybe you can remember the color of the umbrellas, then I can figure out what bar it is! Thanks again for the help!

Gotcha...It was right next to the Kontiki...I just can't remember the name. If you are looking at the ocean it is on the right hand side of Kontiki. Sorry...I misunderstood your question. I believe the umbrellas were burgandy.

Good review, very detailed. Do you remember when the pub crawl was? I thought I saw in a set of capers someone published that it was 8PM or so. Drunken Irishman here dosent want to miss cheap shots :D

The pub crawl is on Tuesday night. You are suppose to meet in the "Lindy Hop" piano bar at 9:45 and the crawl starts at 10:15. Take this suggestion from a good ole Irish woman....start drinking early and the pub crawl might be a little more fun. You know...when your drunk....everything is great! LOL

I was up at 6AM For deck chairs Between 6:30 and 7 mos6t good ones were taken. Last year on Royal Carribean they had chair patrol early in morning . If nobody was there for 20 minutes they took everything off. Worked out real well. There were chairs saved by us for 4 to 5 hours and nobody there.

Just curious why you would save chairs for 5 hours with no one in them...doesn't sound fair to the other passengers.

I like the RCCL idea. Take their stuff!

I could be wrong, but I think the poster meant that there were chairs saved right near them (saved by someone else) for 5 hours.

1) If you want to have chairs, you HAVE to save them. It's just the way it is. Get over it people. People won't stop doing it, so ya gotta do it to SURVIVE!!!

2) I dont think that was the longest post ever. There was one guy who took up 6 FULL posts. It was insane. :D Not too mention the people that create websites.

I think I was on the same cruise as the original poster. Everything seemed pretty accurate. I would like to add that I was on the Riviera deck in the extreme back (AFT) of the boat and whenever we came into port it felt like there was an hour long earthquake in our room!! No exagerration. I don't think this affects that many rooms but I would be cautious if you get assigned a room in that area. I also heard the first comedian was terrible (at least his early show was) but his R-rated show, which I went to, was better. I know someone who went to both shows, he said his clean performance was terrible but the R-rated was a big improvement. The 2nd comedian was very good. I thought the Valor Idol competition was very entertaining. 2 more things, think twice if you need to visit the Doctor, I was there for literally 2 minutes and got charged $60!! Finally it is a zoo trying to get an elevator to the 3rd floor to leave on the last day...Many people end up taking the stairs.

Patti-

When are the formal nights? We're planning on renewing our wedding vows on Tuesday (30th anniversary) and planned on staying dressed up for dinner if the timing works out.

Thanks, that makes me feel better and makes better sense considering the other part f her post.....The word "By" could have been taken either way in that post. Thanks!
