Thinking of Russia and Baltic Sea cruise

We are looking at this cruise on Viking Ocean for 2019. We like traveling in the off or shoulder season because we don't like battling crowds in port (plus can usually get better pricing!)

That said, we've never been to this area before and after doing a little research, it looks like the weather is very unpredictable in this area. Has anyone been on a Baltic sea cruise in May? I know it might be quite cold some days, and we don't mind bundling up, but also don't want to be miserable.

We took a river cruise in early November along the Danube and extended to Prague. Was quite cold for our 3 days in Prague, but didn't bother us and felt like we almost had the place to ourselves!

We did our Baltic cruise in August, so I can't comment on May. But, if you use the search feature and put in May cruising, there have been many thread about the weather and Baltic cruises. Just go thru some of the last few pages and you are sure to find something.

Cheers

Len

We sailed in early May.

Glorious weather for the first part of the cruise - Copenhagen, Stockholm & its wonderful sail-in, Tallinn.

In St Petersburg our Alla guide switched around our two-day itineraries, saying wet weather was headed that way.

Glorious day on an open-boat river cruise, hydrofoil to Peterhof gardens, etc etc.

Next day sure enough was wet & miserable, but we were mainly indoors - places like Hermitage & Peter&Paul.

Next day Helsinki was freezing cold. Skipped an intended boat tour, rode the trams, but mainly watched the world from behind a coffee-pot in a welcoming café. Totally spoilt our day in Helsinki.

Finally a cold sea-day then Zeebrugge/Bruges started wet but dried out.

Which goes to show that weather in northern Europe is in the lap of the gods.

Any month of the year.

JB :)
