We will visit Gdansk June 27th. Does anyone know if there might be shore excursions that you could hire as you get off of the ship, specifically to go to Stutthof Concentration Camp as well as visiting the Gdansk or are we better off going with a tour from the ship? Thanks.

Hi-

We visited Gdansk and Stutthof in June 2010. The tour was a private (16 people total) arranged through Andrew Falkowski at http://www.private-guides.com/guide-in-poland/poland-gdansk-tours/index.php He was already booked for something else so arranged for Margaret A with "Tours by Locals" to take us: http://www.toursbylocals.com/TBL/WebObjects/ToursByLocals.woa/1/wa/mapclick?region=14&area=247&wosid=XcpPQ4oWWxJChSSQktASmM

It was a wonderful and very moving experience. Some of my family came from Eastern Europe, well before WWII. The surname is uncommon and I discovered that persons with that surname were at Stutthof. It was very emotional for me to be there and pay my respects to my "cousins". The website for Stutthof is:http://www.stutthof.pl/english

Here's a link to our Stutthof and Gdansk photos: https://picasaweb.google.com/gary.kappesser/GdanskPolandAndStutthofConcentrationCampJune182010

I would also suggest that you read a book titled "Thanks to My Mother". It is about a mother and daughter who were at Stutthof. I found it "chilling".

We did a ship's tour in Gdansk...I recommend that you either find a tour group/company or find a way to visit Gdansk on your own. We did the Baltics with Princess in 2010. Gdansk was the only ship's tour we used and it was a HUGE mistake. It was our least favorite port because the tour was so unimpressive. We did the Gdansk/Sopot tour. We got exactly 10 minutes on the beach in Sopot and our bus guide was the worst local guide I have ever seen (and we've been on multiple trips to Europe, using local guides in many places). If someone can help you find a reputable local tour company, I highly recommend using them...I definitely would NOT take the ship's tour!

We were a group of 8 and Andrew Falkowski was our guide, a most memorable day. We went to Stuthoff first, then the beautiful city of Gdansk. This trip was in 2010, my understanding is that many cruise lines have since pulled out of Poland, not sure why.

We also had a tour with Andrew Falkowski. It was a very moving and meaningful day.

Andrew was the only tour company that I found that would do BOTH Stutthoff and the Malbork Castle tour.

It was a lot of ground to cover in one port day, but we did it!

Enjoy your visit to Poland, it is a fascinating area, and the people were so kind.
