Then you must know a lot of odd people. I never heard of such a thing

I don't know anyone who seriously lives like that:eek:

Thats because you don't smoke so why would anyone try to bum one off of you. It happens all the time. Every single cruise I have been on at least one person comes up to me to bum a cig because their spouse doesn't know they smoke. And it is usually in the casino. Go figure.

Maybe it appears that many non-smokers are not gamblers but it could be that the smoke is so bothersome that they just decide to forgo the gambling so that they can breathe without choking? I know that I can't stay in the casino long due to smoke because it causes me breathing issues. I am not being sarcastic to smokers but sometimes the breathing problems are not just used to get you to stop.

So did nonsmokers just start gambling? Because revenue on the paradise in the Casino was way below what they projected when it was a non smoking ship.

All that means is that non-smoking for an entire ship does not work at this time.

With all that open deck space, it's silly to deny someone the opportunity to smoke outside.

It's equally silly to allow smoking in the casino.

There will come a time when people look back and are amazed that smokers once partook indoors in public places, subjecting innocent people to the toxic fumes. Granted that will still be many years or decades - but it will come to pass!

That, simply, is reality - and it's not up for debate, though I am SURE someone will take it upon themselves to carry the torch (smoldering though it may be)! ;)

Splendor has that- only problem is, they put the smoking section of the Casino next to the non-smoking lounge (with just a walk-way between them!). My favorite slots are in the smoking section.

I knew that this was gonna come out sooner or later. My favorite slots are in the smoking section or they put all the paying machines in the smoking section, That's why this will never work. I don't understand if the cruiselines see the smoking issue to be this big of a problem, then why don't they just put 2 identical casino's on the ship, then everyone would have what they want. That's the only solution to this problem that I can see.

I think you can extrapolate it from the fact that the casino (not to mention the rest of the ship) Paradise is no longer non-smoking. :p

Paradise was

1) Entirely non-smoking - no where, no how, including ship, captain and crew.

2) a ship before its time

That was then, this is now.

Carnival Dream is NOT a non-smoking ship - far from it. There is lots of legitimate real estate - including part of the casino - on the ship for passenger to smoke themselves into a cancer ward.

That's the same tired argument the rabid anti-smoking crowd always trots out whenever anybody mentions the Paradise.

Mark my words ;), if casino revenues do not meet corporate expectations, Dream will have a fully smoking permitted casino by next year.

So you non-smokers better shuffle up and deal! :p

I am not so much anti-smoking as anti-whining.

You are just blowing smoke.

You words so marked.

Mark mine - smokers are a dying breed.

You're 100% right that if CCL loses revenue with this decision they will change right back...NO friggin doubt about it. I am not 100% positive it's going to work to be honest. I am 100% sure however that the numbers of non smokers are increasing though, so I believe there is a better chance of this working for Carnival this time around.

Yes, non smokers will have to deal if it doesn't.....but you smokers are going to be put in smaller and smaller rooms as time goes on because it's going in that direction (at least in this country it is). You can't deny it. You may be tired of the argument about the Paradise being totally non smoking and way ahead of it's time...but yet you seem to hang on it's demise like a lifeline.

Hey...let's all agree the Paradise was ahead of it's time...and was too rigid..

if someone was found smoking they put them off the ship right then and there...

howver...let's also get real here....there will be more and more restrictions on smokers

and "mark my words">>> every day the latest news from Dream has proven that right

and John has said that if the piano bar works, it will go fleetwide

the piano bar is gross.....period...such a small room...where people sit and blow smoke and people stand behnd you and blow it right on your head......ewww....there is a haze of smoke all over the room ...it is ridiculous, and unfair IMHO

I think that the new rules on dream will be expanded and go fleetwide

I see that Holland America is a adding MORE new "spa cabins" on one of their ships while in drydock...ie, more new non smoking cabins....I think we will soon see that on Carnival

my guess is that by 2012 all cabins will be non smoking

and as for the "I will go elsewhere">>> where are you going to go? I don't think Carnival is alone in their trend following...

look for RCI and NCL to follow suit..by restricting smoking even more (right now no smoking in cabins on RCI....and NCL ONLY allows smoking in cabins and balconies)

my guess is that RCI will make some more venues non smoking...

and the other Carnival lines will follow suit

I think the upper deck...above the lido...might be the final destination..along with one dedicated bar...

It will be interesting to see if they allow smoking on the lido, by the pools on Dream

I know that on Destiny the whole aft area is non smoking and adults only

which lead to people with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths and in their hands in the pool and whirlpools RIGHT BESIDE LITTLE KIDS>..ON THE MAIN LIDO POOL AREA

From looking at the deck plans the pools on Dream look just like the pools on Splendor

but apparently they don't have a retractable roof on Dream

They may make the aft pool non smoking...after all the deli, the tandoor etc is back there

and then they may do what they did on Spendor ...make it all non smoking

The times are changing....more smokers are quitting..or dying off....

They won't go totally non smoking...they will just decrease the places where the smokers can smoke...simple

The Paradise "debate" is over....the future is coming fast..

and it "smells better"

So did nonsmokers just start gambling? Because revenue on the paradise in the Casino was way below what they projected when it was a non smoking ship.

This is an incorrect statement.

It wasn't Casino revenue that was the issue...it was solely a booking issue.

The Paradise was harder to fill because "groups" are the lifeblood of the cruising industry. And even small family groups will have at least ONE smoker....which excluded the Paradise as a possibility.

John Heald just wrote about this on his blog.

And the Paradise NEVER lost money. The MARS (of the entire ship because of booking issues...not just the casino) were not at the same level as the other ships or corporate expectations.

But again, the Paradise never lost money...it just did not make enough money.

Had Carnival been blessed with the insight that Oceania had and placed the same smoking "restrictions" (but not banned it totally)...the Paradise would still be sailing today as "almost smoke free".

We all know it is about the bottom line....but there are also other "influences" that the public does not see that all the cruise lines are dealing with where this issue is concerned.

It has been going on for at least 6 years from WHO and the "opinion" that the "evil rich Americans" that sail on these cruise lines are "subjecting" all these workers from 3rd world countries to second hand smoke....sending them back to their countries with cancer and no possible treatment.

The fact that most of these 3rd world countries smoke more than we do...seems to be a "fact" that the WHO is overlooking and dismissing.

All cruise lines have this "hanging over their heads".....
