Copper train ride not part of tour

Has anybody tried the train ride from El Fuerte on their own? I found some info and it sounds like you can do a shorter version if you take the train called "chepe".

We took the train from El Fuerte to Copper Canyon an a Grand Circle Travel tour several years ago. It is the same train that the ship uses, but just further down the line. IIRC, the ride was about 5 hours. I also remember the statement by the tour director that the train rarely arrives on time. On our trip it was about 30 minutes late.

Did you miss the ship or was it just late from time posted? Im afraid to miss the ship. There's 5 of us on the cruise, so we definately cannot afford it at $400 each, we need to look for other alternatives. Thanks for your reply.
