John answers the smokers

The bottom line is that the technology is out there to solve this problem.

It is BEYOND me why any cruise line (not just Carnival) has not figured out a way to use it.

Can you imagine how much money a cruise line would make if they had a ship where a smoker and nonsmoker could sit side by side without an issue?

A ship where no matter how much smoke was in the piano bar....the system removed it quickly.

A ship where NO smoke drifted from it appointed spot.

I am not an engineer....but I have been submitting design ideas (some of which I thought were very cleaver) for years. For example.....in the piano bar....why not have draw tubes come down from the ceiling ...they could even be covered with tacky twinkle lights (since Carnival is so into the unusual). These draw tubes would remove the smoke quickly and quietly.

That is just common sense.

If a nail salon can be located inside the front door of our Walmart (and all they do is those stinky fake nails)....yet no one smells a thing...ever....then the technology is out there.

Yes, they have one MONSTER draw fan....but certainly something workable is out there.

But as guess as long as cruise lines have us battling each other...then our attention is not directed at them to fix the problem.

The bottom line is that yes, cigarettes are legal. But so is alcohol. However, drinking and driving is NOT legal because you may harm another human being.

Second hand smoke harming another human being is not anyone's "right".

20 years of studies have given us the answer. Now we know what we are dealing with. I have no problem with someone killing themselves...with alcohol, cigarettes or gluttony. But that "right" stops with the individual.

It is obvious that the cruise lines are taking the easy way out of simply restricting smoking....instead of trying new technology.

It could be as simple as requiring all cigarettes onboard to be the smokeless mechanical device that is now available.

We need solutions people !!! If we put as much energy into solutions as we did insults....everyone would win.

No, I do not smoke...but if I could find a solution that helped the smokers...that helps me as well.

Ryan air is now selling packs of "similar" cigarettes...some sort of smokeless substitute or whatever.....they are selling them right on the plane!

Supposedly feel like, look like a cigarette...not lit of course...delivers the nicotine "fix"...without the smell and smoke

they should sell em on the cruise ships too IMHO

have a few places where the smokers can puff their real cigarettes or cigars

and also offer these...for in casino etc

combine with technology

Bottom line is for the smokers to stay within the designated area to smoke and the nonsmokers to stay out of those areas and if that is done then there will be no reason for disscusion.

If you are a nonsmoker, the next time you find yourself on a cruise ship that allowes smoking, before you start complaining about it, check your surrondings and make sure that you are not where you don't belong.

Yes you paid your money for a vacaation just as everyone else did and you are welcome to enjoy the entire ship, same as everyone, but when you enter into an area that is designated for smoking and you know it and then you want to start complaining about it is a bit over the top.

The cruiselines make the rules where smoking is allowed on their ships not the smokers, so why do some of you want to bash the smokers for doing something that the cruiselines say they can do.

If it bothers you so bad then just stay out of those areas period.

The main concerns voiced on this board about smoking are for the casino and the piano bar, which both allow limited smoking as of now. If this is not to your liking sorry but you will have to deal with it or just stay out of these places.

Until it is all changed by the cruiselines and not us as individuals we all must play by their rules rather we like it or not.

You can argue all you want to about how it is now, if you're a smoker then feel free to do so in these areas and if you're a nonsmoker as of right now feel free to enjoy these areas with the smokers and deal with it the best you can or just stay out untl it is changed to suit you.

BTW Have A Nice Day :)

Well said. I'm so sick of the bashing going on. Real info and valid questions, won't get posted by some people, because it leads to this crap. The smokers get belittled. Some of these remarks are totally uncalled for. Some can be compared to racism, the smokers being a separate race. If you don't like the rules, take it up with the cruiseline, don't bash your fellow cruisers (smoking or nonsmoking).

Actually that is the whole point of this thread......John Heald already announced there is a change on the Dream;) And I do disagree about complaining........I believe this is one of the reasons for the changes in the casino and the piano bar........it's been along time coming and many complaints;)

So how do you get the inconsiderate smokers to follow the rules? Ship Security cant be everywhere and at least one example was given where security was deliberately taunted. In general, the inconsiderate smoker will have finished their dirty deed before security has a chance to respond.

In total agreement in to this remark. Pretty simple and to the fact IMHO. :) Y'all ranters and ravers, surely, there is a smoking board on the vast internet somewhere that doesn't pertain to cruising but to smoke-bashing where you could really, really have some total fun. Know what I mean. :) From a non-smoker, who does NOT BASH!

Bottom line is that Carnival will never completly go non-smoking. They know that they will lose alot of business if they do.

I totally understand why they limit smoking in common areas inside the ship. Non-smokers dont want to smell or breath the smoke and they shouldnt have to. They have every right to want to gamble or listen to the piano without being in a cloud.

However, smokers should have the same rights. They should have every right to gamble or listen to the piano and enjoy a smoke, because it is legal to do.

As a smoker I say, give us our cabins and balconys, and the outside decks. I dont think anyone should be allowed to tell you not to smoke when you are outside, because the smoke drifts away.

Plus, the smoke coming from my cigarette is not half as bad as the smoke you breath from the smoke stacks on the ship.

Go hang out in a closed room with a smoker, then go stick your head in the smokestack, see what kills you 1st.

Uh sorry, but you've been doing a fair bit of bashing. Just because it's not against smokers doesn't mean it's not bashing. Just saying.

uh..sorry pal. I'm not and have not been bashing. The non-smoking fanatics I've 'responded' to do not fall under the category of such 'bashing.' These folks like to lump people into groups of inconsiderate and non-caring people who just happen to smoke and that is just plain wrong!! Complaints about people who intentionally 'break the rules' and infringe upon the non-smoking community should not be lumped together with the rest of the fine folks who may be smokers.

The real point here is that with the Dream Carnival admits they are addressing a problem....John Heald has said that they enlisted outside advisors....

they know they need to follow the current worldwide trend of limiting smoking

they are taking steps to do so

no indoor cigar bar...no sports bar ...less places for smokers

limiting the casino to only those actually gambling while smoking is going to cut down on a LOT of smoke...

limiting the piano bar....

I wonder how the pools are?? The aft is now (recently it seemed) non smoking on Destiny...and they had security there to back it up

You can bet that these changes will roll out to the other ships too

From today's blog

John Says:

Hello Tim

I know from a previous post of yours that you were very angry at me for helping people with their dinner reservations and I hope that you have a little more understanding now as to why I continue to do that. May I also respectfully state that you do have some of your facts wrong regarding the smoking so please kindly allow me to tell you what is happening?

Carnival has indeed done intensive research about smoking even enlisting the help of an outside consultant. Now, your Carnival Dream is a trial ship and one thing we have not done is as you say “screw the smokers” as there is an entire section to the aft port side of the casino where smoking is allowed at the tables and slots. What is not allowed is for people to use the casino as a smoking area. This means people wandering around the casino smoking…….and not playing. So, quite simply the casino area which all guests have to pass through and the remaining tables are smoke free. Now, I just spoke to the Casino Manager on your Carnival Dream and apart from getting repeat guests to understand that the casino is not like others in the fleet ……..there have been no complaints from smokers and many, many words of thanks from casino users who are not smokers. Now considering that most land based casinos are 100% non-smoking I think the last thing we are doing is “screwing the smokers”…….in fact I think we have maybe found the best of both worlds and we shall see if this is implemented across the fleet.

Now, the cigar bars. Well, all the Conquest and Splendor class ships now have the cigar bars back where they belong on deck 4 aft and as a cigar smoker myself I love this areas. However, I also realize as does Carnival that we put the Internet Café’s in the wrong place as for non- smokers walking through this lounge is not pleasant. However……we still have them and they are very popular.

On your Carnival Dream the cigar bar is outside and again as a cigar smoker for many years I can tell you that sitting outside under the stars enjoying a fine cigar without worrying who you may be offending by doing so is heaven. Please…..wait until you have tried it before you judge.

Finally, the Piano Bar on your Carnival Dream. Maybe you missed my posting a few days ago where I stated it is not 100% non smoking. The area sitting around the piano is while the seating at the back of the room allows for smoking. Once again……..the best of both worlds and nobody appreciates this more than the piano bar entertainer himself.

I hope this helps Tim and I know smoking continues to be a sensitive subject….but respectfully I must disagree with what you said………stupid is far from what we at Carnival are. I hope you and I get to smoke a cigar together one day and discuss this and other subjects.

Best wishes

John

Hi,

I will be sailing on The Dream in March. I must say that I am very happy with the recent changes to the smoking policy. I have found that Carnival always seemed behind the eight ball on their smoking policies. We will still have to avoid the Piano bar which is a shame since we really enjoy it but even with restricted smoking it is still very bothersome. In Canada all our bars, restaurants, casinos...are all smoke-free. I pay very close attention to where the smoke free areas are and stay in those areas. Our best cruise was on The Paradise!! With saying that I do understand that there must be areas for smokers to go.

Happy cruisin all!!

If you READ MY POST you would know that I do NOT smoke. Again, you are not very intelligent. How sad, very sad. You and your miserable posts....they go on and on and on...

Always with the attacks.

So you don't smoke, you just attack people.

Very, very sad my friend.
