wilsonbabe Posted October 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 1, 2009 I was wondering if its worth changing my cash to dollars on board as i have no idea how much foreign currency to take as its our first cruise. 26th Feb sailing from Barbados!! Any help to a novice would be very welcome!!!
balf Posted October 1, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 1, 2009 You certainly wouldn't get the best rate changing on board, though you would have the flexibility of only changing what you need. And exchange rates are a bit of a gamble - who knows what the rate will be in Feb. I would take the minimum amount you think you will need, then change as you go. david. BrianI Posted October 1, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2009 You can use surplus dollars as tips. The crew dont mind what the currency is and with the weak pound they may actually prefer dollars Brian
capasamari Posted October 1, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 1, 2009 You can also draw cash in the Caribbean using your normal "hole in the wall" bank card. The ATM we used on St. Maarten gave us the choice of drawing euros, US$ or Eastern Caribbean dollars, and one on Antigua also offered US$ or EC$. You will find everywhere will accept US$, so just use them. We have recently bought our $ for December, we use our local Co-op travel agent and buy small amounts (e.g.£30) at a time over a couple of weeks to make sure we get small notes. You will need plenty of $1 or $5 for tips, toilets, drinks, lunch, market stalls and so on. In addition to this, most shops will take credit cards for items over $10. LEESRE Posted October 8, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 8, 2009 Keep your eye on the exhange rate and go your nearest M&S that has a foreign exhange and the rate is usually better. If you need a large amount go to this site very good exhange rate and it is delivered straight to your door for free if you purhcase £500 worth. http://www.FAIRFX.COM Rex
